For viewers looking back at the standout television of 2025, these seven picks span a high-pressure hospital drama, speculative fiction, Hollywood satire, an experimental comedy, and more. This is a curated selection, not a definitive ranking: it includes both new series and returning seasons, while some critic lists count only first-year programs.
Seven standout TV shows from 2025
The selection favors shows singled out in 2025 coverage for their craft, performances, or distinctive premise. Awards recognition and critics’ enthusiasm are useful signals, but they are not the same thing as a shared score or a guarantee that every viewer will agree.
The Pitt — for a tense, grounded medical drama
Set over a single emergency-room shift, hour by hour, The Pitt follows staff at a Pittsburgh trauma center as they contend with urgent cases and the everyday pressures of hospital work. TIME highlighted its attention to public-health challenges as well as routine demands on medical staff. The Associated Press later noted its Primetime Emmy recognition, including for drama series and Noah Wyle. TIME’s 2025 midyear selection and the AP’s awards coverage offer different kinds of support for the pick.
Severance, season two — for unsettling speculative drama
The second season continues the story of workers whose memories are divided between their workplace “innie” selves and outside “outie” lives. TIME praised the season for sustaining the first season’s quality while extending its questions about identity. It is a returning season, not a new series, which makes it a good fit for a broader year-end viewing list but not for a ranking limited to first-year shows. TIME’s roundup discusses the season.

The Studio — for sharp Hollywood workplace comedy
Seth Rogen plays a newly promoted Hollywood studio head navigating the movie business. The comedy uses recognizable industry figures as heightened versions of themselves, and TIME singled out its cinematic formal play as part of the joke. The AP reported Rogen’s Emmy wins and that a second season was in development when its article appeared. TIME’s selection and the AP’s awards coverage cover those aspects.
The White Lotus, season three — for ensemble satire and weekly debate
The third season moves the luxury-resort satire to Thailand, where its guests’ pursuit of spirituality becomes part of the target. TIME found this installment more divisive than earlier seasons, while still praising its sharpness. Its ensemble and unfolding mysteries make it a natural choice for viewers who enjoy discussing an episode between weekly installments. Read TIME’s take on the season.

The Rehearsal, season two — for reality comedy that takes strange turns
Nathan Fielder’s experiment in engineered real-life scenarios turns in its second season toward aviation safety and communication between cockpit crew. TIME described it as less mind-bending than season one, but still engaging. Its unusual blend of comedy and real-world subject matter makes it the most formally eccentric choice here. TIME’s midyear roundup covers the season.
Adolescence — for a tightly constructed limited series
This limited series is built around four episodes, each filmed in a single continuous shot after extensive rehearsals, according to the AP. That sustained approach puts the performances and the unfolding scenes in the foreground. The AP also reported Emmy wins for Owen Cooper, Stephen Graham, and Erin Doherty. It is a strong pick for viewers drawn to patient, dialogue-led historical storytelling. TIME’s 2025 television selection discusses the series.
How to read “best of 2025” lists
There is no single universal measure of the best television. The eligibility rules alone can change the result: Metacritic’s midyear list covers new, first-year programs—including limited series and specials—that debuted from January 1 through June 30, 2025. It uses Metascores measured as of July 1 and requires at least seven critic reviews for inclusion. That is a critics’ consensus measure, not a measure of audience response, and it excludes returning seasons such as Severance season two. Metacritic explains its selection criteria.

Rotten Tomatoes’ opened 2025 guide is a different kind of reference: it is a changing list of Certified Fresh series, updated February 24, 2026, rather than a preserved snapshot of what its list looked like during 2025. It should not be treated as directly interchangeable with Metacritic’s midyear ranking. Rotten Tomatoes’ guide shows its current framing.
