If YouTube Live or your encoder rejects a stream key, first copy the current key and matching stream URL from the intended event in YouTube Studio and replace the encoder’s saved values. Start the encoder and check the Live Control Room preview. If the key is current but the connection still fails, check whether the error points to RTMPS transport, media format, or channel eligibility instead. “Pre-recorded stream key” does not identify one specific YouTube feature or cause; the exact encoder and error message matter.
Set up the key for the correct scheduled stream
- In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go live → Stream, then open the scheduled stream you intend to use. YouTube’s encoder instructions are at Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
- Copy that stream’s key and server URL from Live Control Room into the encoder’s corresponding fields. Make sure both values belong to the same stream. A key is not just a label: YouTube Help describes stream keys as “your YouTube stream’s password and address.” Treat it as a private credential; do not publish or share it. See Manage live stream settings.
- Start the encoder and wait for its preview to appear in Live Control Room. For a scheduled stream, click Go live there after the preview arrives; starting the encoder sends the feed but does not itself start the scheduled event for viewers.
YouTube allows a custom stream key to be reused. If the key was reset, however, the encoder must be updated with the newly generated value. Only a channel owner or manager can reset a key; editors and viewers do not have that permission.
Diagnose what “rejected” means
The phrase “rejected stream key” alone is not enough to identify the fault. Note the encoder’s exact error and whether it reports a successful connection. An encoder startup error, an SSL or timeout error, a YouTube stream-health warning after connection, and an account that cannot start a live stream point to different fixes.

Fix a stale or mismatched key
In YouTube Studio, open Create → Go live → Stream and select the intended event. Copy its current stream key and paste it into the encoder’s Stream Key field. Also copy the server URL associated with that event. Avoid relying on a key saved for another stream or a value that was changed after the encoder was configured.

If someone reset the key, replace the old value in the encoder with the new one before reconnecting. If you lack permission to reset it, ask a channel owner or manager to do so. YouTube’s instructions for managing keys are on its live stream settings page.
Check the RTMPS URL, protocol and port
A correct key paired with the wrong server address or protocol can still fail to connect. If the encoder offers a YouTube RTMPS preset, select it and enter the key if prompted. For manual configuration, get the RTMPS address from the lock icon in Live Control Room’s Stream URL field. The interface may show the ordinary RTMP URL by default, so confirm that the address actually uses RTMPS.

- For an SSL-related error, check that both the selected protocol and server are RTMPS. If needed, try port 443.
- For a connection timeout, confirm the encoder supports RTMPS in that encoder’s documentation; a timeout may indicate that it does not.
- Do not substitute a URL from a different event or guess at a server address. Copy the exact address shown in the intended stream’s settings.

If YouTube connects, inspect the stream format
A feed can reach YouTube while still generating a media-format error. If Live Control Room reports “Incorrect stream format,” set the video codec to H.264 and the audio codec to AAC, as specified in YouTube’s live streaming error messages.

For general encoder guidance, YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval, with the interval no longer than four seconds. A suitable bitrate depends on the codec, resolution, frame rate and available upload capacity, so there is no single safe bitrate to prescribe without those details. Check YouTube’s stream-health message and encoder settings rather than treating every format warning as a bad key.
Confirm the channel can go live and preview before starting
YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the past 90 days. If the encoder configuration appears correct but the channel cannot start a live stream, check those eligibility conditions. YouTube also recommends setting up ahead of time, checking the Live Control Room preview, and monitoring audio, video and stream health. Its guidance is at YouTube live streaming tips.

What to provide if the problem persists
If the current event key and URL are entered correctly but the problem remains, gather the details that distinguish a credential problem from an encoder-specific one:
- The encoder or software name and version.
- The complete error text, not just “key rejected.”
- Whether the encoder reports a successful connection and whether a preview appears in Live Control Room.
- Whether you are using a scheduled stream or another YouTube feature to play prerecorded media.
- The selected protocol (RTMP or RTMPS) and whether the error mentions SSL, timeout or stream format.
YouTube’s general encoder instructions cover scheduled streams and key entry, but they do not establish why an unnamed encoder rejects a key or whether that encoder supports a particular prerecorded-media workflow. If the software uses a YouTube sign-in integration without a key field, YouTube advises contacting that software provider rather than trying to apply key-based instructions.
