Yes. OBS supports WebM as a local media file, and its VLC Video source can play a playlist of files. Install VLC for the VLC Video source to appear; if OBS is 64-bit, install 64-bit VLC. Preview your actual files in OBS before broadcasting, because support for the WebM format does not guarantee that every file or codec combination will play correctly.
Set up a WebM playlist in OBS
- Install VLC. Install VLC on the computer running OBS. Match its architecture to OBS: OBS documentation says that 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC.
- Add the playlist source. In your OBS scene, add a VLC Video source, then add the WebM files to its playlist. The source is available on Windows, macOS, and Linux, subject to the VLC dependency.
- Choose playback behavior. Set playlist looping if the program should repeat; OBS documents loop as on by default. Set shuffle as needed; it is off by default. Leave shuffle off when the files need to play in a planned order.
- Check playback before going live. Preview the playlist in OBS and listen to its audio. Confirm that each file plays, the order is right, and the end-of-list behavior suits the broadcast. OBS documents WebM support, but does not guarantee playback for every WebM encoding, audio track, damaged file, or computer configuration.
- Configure the outgoing stream separately. Set OBS’s output for the ingest protocol and video codec supported by the YouTube stream you are using. A local WebM playlist is an input that OBS decodes; it is not the format YouTube necessarily receives.
Why VLC Video may be missing
The VLC Video source depends on VLC being installed. If it does not appear in OBS, install VLC and make sure its architecture matches OBS. In particular, OBS’s documentation calls for 64-bit VLC with 64-bit OBS. Restart OBS after installing VLC and check the source list again.
WebM playback and YouTube ingest are different
OBS’s Media Sources documentation lists .webm among supported video file types. That means OBS can use a WebM file as local media; it does not mean YouTube accepts that file or container as a live feed. OBS decodes the playlist and encodes the stream it sends to YouTube.
The appropriate outgoing codec depends on the ingest protocol. For ordinary RTMP ingest, YouTube lists H.264; other protocols have their own codec options and requirements. Check the current protocol and encoder settings in OBS and YouTube rather than choosing them based on the playlist’s file extension.

Choose the source and playback settings for the program
| Need | OBS choice | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Play one local file | Media Source | OBS documents Media Source for local media files, including WebM. |
| Play multiple local files | VLC Video | Install VLC; add the files to its playlist and preview them. |
| Repeat the playlist | Enable playlist looping | Loop is on by default according to OBS documentation. |
| Keep a planned sequence | Disable shuffle | Shuffle is off by default according to OBS documentation. |
| Send the broadcast to YouTube | Configure OBS output for YouTube’s selected ingest protocol | Use a protocol-supported codec; local WebM playback does not determine the outgoing format. |
Troubleshoot before the broadcast
- VLC Video is not in the source list: Install VLC. If you use 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC, then restart OBS and look again.
- A playlist item does not play: Preview the file directly in the OBS source and check the exact file. The documented WebM support is not a guarantee for every codec combination or damaged file.
- Picture plays but audio is missing or wrong: Preview the audio in OBS and check the source’s audio-track settings. Verify the file itself before relying on it in a live program.
- The playlist plays in the wrong order: Turn shuffle off and review the playlist order before going live.
- The playlist stops instead of repeating: Check the loop-playlist setting.
- YouTube rejects or fails to receive the stream: Check the selected YouTube ingest protocol and the corresponding OBS output configuration. The local WebM container is not the outgoing stream format.
