The reliable answer is to prepare an independent backup encoder and rehearse the handoff. If OBS crashes, YouTube’s auto-start setting will not relaunch it. A second computer can send a prepared holding scene or alternate church feed; a cloud service may provide continuity if the local feed disappears. Neither approach guarantees a seamless takeover, so test the full workflow—including what viewers see and hear—before relying on it.

What to do when OBS crashes

First identify what failed: the OBS process, the computer, the internet connection, or YouTube’s ingest path. Then use a recovery path that was configured and rehearsed in advance. Repeatedly starting encoders without checking which one is sending can make recovery less predictable.

  1. Confirm the failure. Have an operator check whether OBS closed or froze while the computer and network remain available, or whether the host computer or internet connection is down.
  2. Activate the prepared backup. Start the second encoder or the configured cloud continuity workflow. It should send the planned holding slide, recorded program, or alternate feed—not an untested blank scene.
  3. Check YouTube. In Live Control Room, verify the incoming signal, preview, and stream-health messages. YouTube recommends monitoring stream health during a live event.
  4. Hand back deliberately. Once the primary system is stable, follow the documented hand-back procedure. If the stream ended or you need a new event, select the correct scheduled event and stream settings; do not assume the old viewer URL remains valid after a long interruption.
  5. Record what happened. Save OBS logs and note the time, symptoms, network state, and recovery action. Use the OBS connection troubleshooting guide if the incident involved dropped frames or disconnections.

Build a backup before the next service

Choose what viewers should see

Decide what “live” means during an outage: a holding slide, a recorded worship or sermon loop, or an alternate live program. Decide whether it includes audio, and tell viewers what to expect. A prepared, intentional fallback is better than an unexplained frozen image or silence.

Prepare the second encoder or cloud path

A second computer running OBS or another compatible encoder can be configured to send the backup scene or alternate feed. A cloud restream or failover service may keep an outgoing stream active or show a holding graphic when the local feed disappears. These are possible continuity patterns, not guaranteed YouTube behavior. Confirm the chosen service’s current capabilities, handoff behavior, event and URL implications, and cost before depending on it.

Document the primary and backup configurations securely. YouTube stream keys are credentials that direct an encoder to the stream; protect them like account secrets. YouTube supports reusable custom stream keys in Live Control Room settings. Use one only if it fits your workflow, and make sure the backup system is authorized and configured for the correct destination. Do not assume two encoders will take over automatically just because they share a key or event.

Rehearse the complete viewer path

  1. Schedule a controlled test, using a private or unlisted event if that suits your channel workflow.
  2. Include representative speaking, music, camera movement, and transitions into silence. YouTube recommends testing with representative audio and video motion before going live.
  3. Check both the Live Control Room preview and the public viewer experience. Verify picture, audio, latency, stream health, and the backup’s intended scene.
  4. Simulate the failure by stopping OBS or disconnecting the primary encoder. Start the backup, observe what viewers see, then restore the primary and rehearse the hand-back.
  5. Write down who activates the backup, where the credentials are stored, which event to use, and what to do if the first recovery attempt fails.

Tell an encoder crash from a connection problem

OBS closed or froze, but the computer and network are working

This is a process-recovery problem. A watchdog or operating-system task might relaunch OBS, but that is not independent failover: viewers may see an interruption, and the method cannot help if the computer itself has failed. The sources below do not establish an official OBS crash-watchdog recipe. For continuity, prepare an independent sender and test its takeover.

OBS is still running but dropping frames or disconnecting

That points to the connection between the computer and the ingest server, not necessarily a crashed encoder. OBS says dropped frames can indicate an unstable connection or one that cannot sustain the configured bitrate. Its suggested checks include matching bitrate to stable upload capacity, using wired Ethernet, and checking network software, drivers, modem/router, cables, and other network devices. These steps address connectivity; they do not restart a crashed OBS process. See the OBS troubleshooting guide.

The computer loses power or restarts

A second encoder helps only if it has independent power and network access. A UPS may bridge a brief local power interruption, but the right capacity depends on the equipment and no particular model or specification is established here.

The internet connection or YouTube is unavailable

A second encoder on the same internet connection will not solve a shared network outage. An independently routed connection or provider-side continuity may address some failure paths, but each adds cost or configuration and should be weighed against the church’s tolerance for an interruption.

Settings and YouTube behavior that matter

Auto-start is not an OBS restart switch

YouTube’s auto-start and auto-stop settings control whether encoder activity starts or stops the YouTube stream when enabled. They do not relaunch a crashed OBS process. Configure them in Live Control Room only as part of the intended event workflow, not as the recovery plan. See Manage live stream settings.

Match encoder output to the stream

YouTube publishes bitrate recommendations by codec, resolution, and frame rate. For H.264 at 1080p and 60 fps, its current guidance lists 6 Mbps as the minimum and 17 Mbps as recommended. These are ingestion recommendations, not a guarantee that a church connection can sustain that rate. Choose the row for the actual output format, leave headroom for network variation, and test under realistic conditions. YouTube also recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport. The guidance is in Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

Understand backup ingestion and protocol limits

YouTube’s HLS setup instructions require an HLS-capable encoder and provide a backup server URL when backup ingestion is needed. HLS has higher latency than RTMP. A backup ingestion endpoint is a connection detail, not a failover plan: the church still needs a working encoder and a tested handoff. See Set up an HLS stream.

OBS’s technical guide discusses SRT/RIST transport and relay architectures for some network conditions. These advanced designs add complexity and may add relay bandwidth costs; they address transport behavior, not a crashed OBS interface by themselves. See the OBS Studio SRT/RIST guide.

Compare recovery approaches by the failure they cover

Approach What it can cover Trade-offs and limits
StreamNeo — cloud playback for YouTube Uploaded video can loop from the cloud while the local computer is off; includes automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. Plays uploaded videos rather than a live camera feed. It adds a service and configuration path; confirm that cloud playback fits the church’s program.
Relaunch OBS on the same computer OBS process termination while the host, power, and network remain healthy. May leave a visible interruption; does not cover computer, power, or network failure. Requires monitoring and testing. The cited sources do not provide an official OBS crash-watchdog recipe.
Second computer as backup encoder Primary computer crash or maintenance, if the backup is ready and can reach YouTube. Requires setup and an operator or tested switching automation; shared power and network failures remain. This is a community-described pattern, not a platform guarantee.
Cloud restream or failover service May maintain an outgoing stream or holding graphic when a local feed disappears. Adds a provider, configuration, and possible cost. Verify handoff, event and URL behavior, and current terms; no specific provider is validated here.
Backup ingestion endpoint An alternate ingestion path when the encoder and YouTube workflow support it. Does not restart a crashed OBS process. Protocol capability and the platform workflow must match.
SRT/RIST relay design Some transport and network resilience through an appropriate relay architecture. More complex, may add bandwidth cost, and is not a process-crash solution by itself.

Compare options by the failures they cover (OBS process, computer, power, internet, or platform), recovery time, viewer continuity and URL behavior, independence of power and network, operator complexity, and recurring cost. A backup computer still shares risks unless its infrastructure is independent; a cloud relay removes some local dependencies but introduces a provider and configuration path. Neither architecture guarantees uninterrupted viewing.

Or let it run in the cloud

For a church that streams prerecorded sermons, worship, or other uploaded video rather than a live camera feed, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add the YouTube stream key once, and go live. The cloud loops the uploaded video, so no computer or home connection has to stay on. It is not a replacement for a live camera encoder.

  • Nothing has to stay on at home; uploaded video keeps playing from the cloud.
  • Any quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, streamed as uploaded without re-encoding or quality tiers.
  • Automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream.
  • The first day is free with no card, one free day per account. The monthly option is $9.99 per month.

Start the free day on StreamNeo if cloud playback fits your church’s 24/7 stream.
