YouTube documents its encoder setup and VideoLAN documents playlist controls, but those sources do not establish a version-independent, uninterrupted VLC-to-YouTube recipe. Test your installed VLC build in an unlisted event before relying on it for a service.
What you need to set up
- Sermon recordings that your church has permission to broadcast, plus permission for any music, images, or other material in them.
- VLC installed on a computer with the sermon files available locally.
- A YouTube channel eligible to livestream. YouTube’s live-streaming tips say to verify the channel and check that it has no live-streaming restrictions. YouTube live streaming tips
- A YouTube Live event, its Stream URL, and its stream key.
- Someone available to watch the Live Control Room during the broadcast and respond if the feed or playback stops.
Use an unlisted event for an end-to-end test. Confirm that the picture and sound work and, for a playlist, that the transitions between sermons behave acceptably. VLC’s playlist controls and YouTube’s publishing controls are separate; the available official documentation does not verify that every VLC desktop version can send a continuous playlist directly to YouTube.
Choose the VLC repeat mode
One sermon: repeat the current item
Open the recording in VLC and enable the control for repeating the current item. The intended result is that the same sermon starts again when it reaches the end. VLC’s playlist API distinguishes repeating the current item from looping a playlist, but exact UI labels and locations can vary across VLC versions and operating systems. Several sermons: loop the playlist
Add the recordings to VLC in the order you want them played, then enable playlist loop or repeat-all rather than repeat-current. Confirm that VLC advances through the files and returns to the first item after the last. VideoLAN’s documentation describes separate repeat and loop controls; do not assume that a button with a particular icon or label behaves identically in every build. Before streaming, play through each recording far enough to check audio, picture, and file compatibility. Include the end of one sermon and the beginning of the next in your test: an unwanted pause, missing audio, or playback failure at a transition can affect the live broadcast even when each file plays by itself.
Create the YouTube Live event
- In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room. Create a stream or schedule one under Manage, then set the title, privacy, and other event details. YouTube’s encoder workflow covers creating and scheduling an event. Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder
- Open the event’s stream settings and copy its Stream URL and stream key. Use the values shown for this event, not an example from another setup. YouTube describes the key as the credential that lets an encoder send a feed; treat it like a password and reset it if it is exposed. Manage live stream settings
- If your encoder supports RTMPS, use the RTMPS URL shown in Live Control Room. YouTube recommends RTMPS, an encrypted extension of RTMP; the encoder must support the protocol. Encrypt your stream using RTMPS
Keep the stream key out of screenshots, public tutorials, and shared documents. Anyone with access to it may be able to send a feed to the event.

Connect VLC and test the broadcast
YouTube’s documented encoder workflow is to enter the event’s server URL and stream key in an encoder, start sending, check the preview, and then go live. The retrieved official material does not specify a current, universal VLC desktop output configuration for this full workflow. VLC also documents VLM broadcast playlists, but that documentation is not proof that a particular desktop build will connect to YouTube or preserve seamless transitions. - Check that the VLC version and output method you intend to use can send to YouTube’s server URL using the event’s stream key. If you cannot confirm RTMPS support, do not assume it works; use an encoder whose compatibility and configuration you can verify. - Start sending the feed from the encoder, then wait for the YouTube preview. For a scheduled event, sending the feed is not the same as making the event live: check the preview and select Go live in Live Control Room when ready. YouTube encoder setup
- Check picture and sound, then observe at least one transition between playlist items. Verify that VLC is still advancing and that YouTube continues to receive the feed.
- For an actual service, assign someone to monitor the preview and stream health throughout the broadcast. YouTube recommends setting up an encoder at least 2 hours ahead and starting it at least 15 minutes before the event; these are preparation recommendations, not guarantees. Encoder settings to check
These are YouTube’s general encoder recommendations, not VLC-specific settings. The right available controls depend on the encoder you use; do not treat this list as evidence that every VLC build exposes them or supports a YouTube-compatible output.

- Keyframes: YouTube recommends a 2-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed 4 seconds. Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions
- Resolution, bitrate, and codec: choose values and a codec supported by your encoder and appropriate to the event. YouTube’s encoder-settings page provides its current guidance; consult it rather than copying a setting from an unrelated setup. YouTube encoder settings
- Transport: use the event’s RTMPS URL if the encoder supports it. A URL or stream key copied from another event is not a substitute for the values in your Live Control Room. YouTube RTMPS instructions
Plan the service and archive
Decide who starts the encoder, who selects Go live, and who monitors the broadcast. When the service is finished, stop the YouTube event and encoder in the order that fits your workflow, then check the published archive. YouTube Help says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; do not rely on automatic archiving for a stream that reaches or exceeds that threshold. YouTube encoder setup
Keep the event unlisted during testing, and use public visibility only when the church is ready for viewers. Confirm rights for all content before broadcasting; platform setup guidance does not determine whether a particular recording or song is cleared for your use.

Common problems and what to check
- The same sermon repeats instead of the whole list: VLC is likely set to repeat-current. Switch to playlist loop or repeat-all and confirm the playlist order and end-of-list behavior.
- The next sermon does not play: check that the file is present, plays on its own, and is actually included in the playlist. Test the transition before the service; VLC’s repeat control alone does not establish uninterrupted YouTube delivery.
- YouTube does not show a preview: verify that the encoder is sending to the current event’s Stream URL with its matching key, and check encoder compatibility with the selected protocol. YouTube’s troubleshooting material covers RTMPS compatibility and connection issues. YouTube RTMPS instructions
- The event is scheduled but viewers cannot watch: sending a feed does not by itself publish the scheduled event. Check the preview and select Go live in Live Control Room when you intend to begin. YouTube encoder setup
- The stream key may have been exposed: reset it in YouTube’s stream settings and update the encoder with the replacement. Manage live stream settings
- Picture or audio fails at a file boundary: test that exact transition in an unlisted event and inspect the encoder’s output and YouTube preview. If your VLC setup cannot maintain a reliable feed, use an encoder workflow you can verify rather than assuming playlist playback guarantees a continuous broadcast.
