To stream a podcast episode to YouTube Live in AAC, use a live encoder to play or ingest the episode audio, send it as AAC, and include a video track such as a cover image or simple visual. For a typical stereo podcast, YouTube recommends 44.1 kHz audio at 128 kbps. Use RTMPS when your encoder supports it, test the complete setup before going public, and watch YouTube’s stream-health indicators while live.

What you need for an AAC podcast livestream

  • A YouTube Live broadcast set up in YouTube Studio, with its encoder connection details.
  • An encoder that can play or ingest your prerecorded episode and send a live stream.
  • A video output. YouTube’s encoder workflow calls for a live video stream with audio; do not assume an audio-only connection will work. A static cover image or a simple visual can accompany the episode.
  • A stable upload connection suited to your chosen video resolution and frame rate.

YouTube documents AAC and MP3 as supported audio codecs for RTMP/RTMPS ingestion. This guide uses AAC. The exact labels in YouTube Studio can change, so follow the current Live Control Room prompts.

Set up the stream in YouTube Studio

  1. In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and create or select the broadcast. Follow the current prompts to obtain the encoder connection information. Depending on your encoder, you may enter an ingestion URL and stream key separately, or provide a combined URL/name form. YouTube’s API describes the stream resource as containing the ingestion URL and stream name: YouTube LiveStreams resource.
  2. Copy the stream key into your encoder’s connection settings. Treat it like a password: do not publish it, include it in a visible screen capture, or share it with people who should not be able to broadcast to your channel.
  3. Select an encoder capable of playing or ingesting the episode audio and sending it live. OBS is one software option documented by YouTube for its 5.1 workflow, but this does not establish a specific OBS version or interface path. YouTube’s encoder overview is at YouTube encoder settings.
  4. Choose RTMPS if your encoder supports it. YouTube recommends RTMPS; its developer guide explains that it tunnels RTMP through an SSL connection. The documented RTMPS connection uses an rtmps URL and port 443: YouTube RTMPS guide.

Configure AAC audio and video

Typical stereo podcast audio

Set the encoder’s audio codec to AAC, sample rate to 44.1 kHz, and audio bitrate to 128 kbps for stereo. These are YouTube’s published recommendations for this setup, not a promise that different source recordings will sound identical after encoding. Use mono or stereo channel layout unless you have deliberately prepared compatible surround audio. See YouTube’s encoder settings.

If the episode exists as an MP3 or AAC file, the important point is what the encoder sends to YouTube: configure its live output for AAC. The source file’s format alone does not confirm that the outgoing stream is AAC. Route the episode playback into the encoder’s live audio output and verify that the outgoing stream includes an audio track.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Video settings and keyframes

Choose a video resolution and bitrate that your upload connection can sustain. YouTube publishes video bitrate guidance by resolution, frame rate, and codec, so there is no single correct video bitrate for every podcast stream. Test your actual upload speed under representative conditions and consult the current YouTube encoder settings for the relevant video profile.

YouTube recommends keyframes every 2 seconds and says they should not exceed 4 seconds. Apply that setting in the encoder’s video output. Even when the image is mostly static, the stream still needs its video track and should be tested with the visual content you intend to use.

Test, then start the broadcast

  1. Before the event, run a private or otherwise controlled test using the same type of episode audio and visual motion planned for the public stream.
  2. Confirm in the encoder that the correct playback source is routed, AAC is selected, and the audio meter responds while the episode plays.
  3. Check YouTube’s Live Control Room for the incoming picture and sound, and review any stream-health warnings before making the broadcast public.
  4. Start the broadcast through the current YouTube Studio controls. During the live event, keep an eye on stream health so you can catch connection or encoding problems promptly.

YouTube specifically advises testing with audio and video movement similar to the actual stream before going live. A static cover test alone may not expose problems that appear when your real episode and visuals are running.

Optional: use 5.1 only for a surround-produced episode

Ordinary spoken-word podcasts generally use the stereo path above. If an episode has actually been produced as compatible 5.1 surround sound, YouTube’s documented RTMP settings are AAC at 48 kHz and 384 kbps. Do not apply those settings to an ordinary stereo mix. YouTube’s 5.1 setup guidance says to leave manual stream-resolution settings off for automatic 5.1 detection and lists compatible software encoders including OBS, AWS Elemental Live, and AVerMedia RECentral 4, plus the Videon EdgeCaster hardware encoder: YouTube 5.1 audio setup.

Troubleshoot common AAC livestream problems

YouTube shows no sound

Confirm the encoder is sending an audio track and that the episode player or other intended source is routed to the live output. Check that the encoder’s audio meter moves during playback, then review YouTube’s health messages. The Live Streaming API identifies issues including noAudioStream: YouTube LiveStreams resource.

The audio codec or settings are flagged

Check the encoder’s actual output codec rather than assuming it matches the source file. Select AAC for this workflow, then inspect YouTube’s health messages for audio codec or sample-rate problems. YouTube’s documented RTMP/RTMPS audio codecs include AAC and MP3; unsupported settings can still trigger warnings.

Sample rate, channel layout, or bitrate warnings

For ordinary stereo, set 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps, and use a mono or stereo channel layout. If you intentionally send 5.1, use the separate 5.1 requirements above. YouTube’s health reporting can identify sample-rate and excessive-channel issues as well as audio bitrate warnings; consult its stream health issue documentation.

RTMPS connection or TLS errors

Verify that the connection URL uses the rtmps scheme, that the YouTube ingestion endpoint and application path are correct, and that the encoder can use SSL/TLS on port 443. Check the server hostname as well. YouTube’s RTMPS guide describes the secure connection approach.

Primary and backup streams do not match

If you configure primary and backup ingestion, keep their audio codec, bitrate, sample rate, channel count, and relevant video settings consistent. YouTube documents mismatch warnings for backup streams in its LiveStreams resource health issues.
