There is no official, objective order of WWE’s greatest Superstars. This ranking weighs drawing power and cultural reach alongside major accomplishments, longevity, in-ring storytelling, character work, and influence on WWE or later performers. It includes individual performers, not teams as separate entries; a wrestler’s tag-team work can still count toward their place.
The order is an editorial judgment, not a statistical leaderboard. Different weights—such as prioritizing match quality, championship success, or women’s wrestling—would produce a different list. WWE’s own Top 50 good guys in wrestling history focuses on popularity and character and reaches back into local territories before television; its 10 greatest heroes is also explicitly about heroes. Neither is a universal ranking of every kind of Superstar.
How this ranking weighs greatness
Each placement considers the same broad questions: How far did the performer reach audiences? What did they accomplish in major WWE moments? Could they remain relevant over time? How well did they tell stories in the ring and on the microphone? Did their work travel beyond wrestling or shape the performers and presentation that followed? There is no formula that turns those qualities into a definitive score, and this order reflects how they are balanced here.
The list includes performers from different eras and roles. Comparing them means considering what audiences and WWE asked of them at the time, rather than treating every era as if it had the same television landscape, match style, or expectations. Entries are ranked individually; the influence of tag-team work is included where it helps explain a performer’s contribution.

The 35 greatest WWE Superstars in history
1. “Stone Cold” Steve Austin
A defining figure of the Attitude Era, Austin made audience connection and character central to WWE’s mainstream appeal. WWE’s heroes feature cites his role in that era; this ranking puts his combination of cultural reach, memorable character, and lasting influence first.
2. Hulk Hogan
Hogan’s larger-than-life persona helped make WWE a mass-audience spectacle. The Associated Press reported in 2025 that more than 33 million viewers watched the 1988 Hogan–Andre broadcast on NBC. That is a reported audience for that broadcast, not a measure of Hogan’s total career reach. AP also notes that WWE’s claimed WrestleMania III paid attendance of 93,173 is disputed by historians, so it should not be treated as settled fact.
3. John Cena
Cena sustained a leading role across multiple eras, connecting a recognizable character and extensive major-event presence with work beyond wrestling. WWE’s heroes feature also points to his charitable record. His staying power and breadth make him one of the clearest all-around choices for the top tier.
4. The Rock
The Rock paired sharp character work and audience command with championship success and a major career in film. WWE’s heroes feature highlights both sides of that reach. He ranks just below the top three because his enduring influence is immense, even though his full-time WWE run was less sustained than theirs.

6. Shawn Michaels
Michaels’ reputation rests heavily on in-ring storytelling and reinvention as well as his influence on later performers. In a WWE feature asking “Who’s your favorite wrestler’s favorite wrestler?”, WWE Superstar Kofi Kingston gives a personal answer: “In my opinion, the greatest wrestler of all time is Shawn Michaels.” That is Kingston’s opinion, not an official ranking, but it captures the kind of peer esteem that supports Michaels’ place here.
7. Bret “Hit Man” Hart
Hart’s technical reputation and carefully constructed match stories made him a defining performer of his era. WWE’s heroes feature identifies his technical standing; this ranking places him high for the way performance craft and a distinct character could reinforce one another.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why reasonable rankings will differ
“Greatest” changes meaning with the question being asked. WWE’s historical lists illustrate the difference: its good-guys feature explicitly weighs popularity and character and includes pre-television territory history, while its heroes feature chooses for heroic impact. A ranking of all Superstars must account for villains, antiheroes, women, and performers whose strongest contributions were not heroic roles.
Even a consistent rubric cannot erase differences between eras or roles. One reader may prioritize match storytelling; another may put cultural reach or longevity first. WWE’s feature on favorite wrestlers makes that subjectivity plain in its question, “Who’s your favorite wrestler?”—a different question from identifying the biggest or best. This ranking is one defensible interpretation, not a final canon.
Further WWE history
For readers interested in how WWE presents its history, the company and A&E announced a slate of documentary biographies in 2021 about Legends including “Stone Cold” Steve Austin, Randy Savage, Roddy Piper, Booker T, Shawn Michaels, Bret Hart, Mick Foley, and Ultimate Warrior. In that announcement, WWE Chief Brand Officer Stephanie McMahon said, “We are thrilled to unveil the stories behind some of the greatest Legends and moments in WWE history.” The announcement establishes the planned subjects at that time; it does not establish where those documentaries are currently available to watch.
