Doune Castle in Scotland is the main castle location in Monty Python and the Holy Grail—and it plays several different castles in the film. The notable exception is Castle Aaargh in the final scene, represented by Castle Stalker on Scotland’s west coast. Other famous scenes were filmed at places that are not castles at all.
Which real castles appear in the film?
The film uses Doune Castle, near Stirling, for multiple settings. Historic Environment Scotland confirms the film was shot there in 1974 and identifies Doune as the setting for Castle Anthrax and other locations. The finer scene-by-scene identifications below come from Scotland’s Wild’s location guide, updated in September 2026.

Why Doune Castle is the main location
Doune is a medieval courtyard castle built as the home of Regent Albany, according to Historic Environment Scotland’s visitor overview. Its range of spaces made it useful for representing different places in the story: the Great Hall stands in for Camelot, while other scenes use the same castle as settings including Castle Anthrax and Swamp Castle. That is why it is more accurate to say Doune plays several castles than to say every castle exterior in the film is Doune.
Historic Environment Scotland’s filming page confirms that Monty Python & The Holy Grail was filmed at Doune and specifically mentions Castle Anthrax and other locations. The scene-level map is supplied by the Scotland’s Wild guide, not by the official heritage listing.

What other film locations are mistaken for castles?
Two memorable locations are landscapes or a mine, not castles. Scotland’s Wild identifies Glen Coe as the setting for the Bridge of Death and Tomnadashan Mine near Loch Tay as the Cave of Caerbannog. These locations help explain the film’s broader Scottish connection, but neither is a castle to add to a castle-visiting list.

The official planning page places Doune 8.5 miles from Stirling and 4.5 miles from Dunblane. It says the number 59 bus from Stirling takes about 30 minutes, followed by a half-mile walk from the Bank Street bus stop; parking at the castle is very limited. Ticket prices and travel details can change, so check the official page when planning a visit.
Castle Stalker
Castle Stalker is privately owned, and the location guide says only a small number of interior tours run each year. Visitors generally see it from the shore; an interior visit should not be assumed to be available without advance arrangements. Check the castle’s own current information before making plans.

Which location should you prioritize?

For the clearest castle-focused visit, Doune is the practical choice: it accounts for multiple scenes and has official visitor information. Castle Stalker is the more specific destination for the final scene, but access to its interior is not routine. The western Highlands locations can form a longer road itinerary, but Glen Coe and Tomnadashan Mine are not castles.
