The Truth About Jim follows Sierra Barter as she investigates family allegations about her late step-grandfather, Jim Mordecai, and a possible connection to the Santa Rosa Hitchhiker Murders. The four-part docuseries presents family testimony and questions raised by Barter’s inquiry, but the reporting does not establish that Mordecai committed those murders or was the Zodiac Killer.
Who is Sierra Barter, and what is the docuseries about?
The Truth About Jim is a four-episode Max docuseries directed by Skye Borgman, according to a February 2024 review by The Daily Beast. It follows Barter’s effort to understand stories told within her family about Mordecai, her late step-grandfather, and to explore whether those stories might relate to unsolved crimes.
In a March 2024 interview, Fox News Digital described Barter as 32 at the time and reported that Mordecai died in 2008, when she was 15. The account frames the series’ starting point as Barter talking with relatives about Jim; it is her investigation, not a finding that he committed a crime.
What allegations does the series examine?
Fox News Digital and The Daily Beast describe family members’ allegations that Mordecai physically and sexually abused relatives. These are allegations and testimony presented in connection with the documentary, not adjudicated findings established by the reporting. The distinction matters: family accounts explain why Barter began investigating, but they do not by themselves prove a connection to any homicide.

What are the Santa Rosa Hitchhiker Murders?
Fox News Digital describes the Santa Rosa Hitchhiker Murders as at least seven unsolved homicides of young women in California’s North Bay Area in 1972–1973. That figure and summary are the outlet’s reported account; no official case file or agency statistics were reviewed for this article.
Barter connects the family stories to those cases as a possibility to investigate. The reviewed coverage does not establish that Mordecai was responsible. The Daily Beast says the series ends with his relationship to the Santa Rosa murders unknown.

Was Jim Mordecai the Zodiac Killer?
The reviewed reporting does not substantiate that theory. Fox News Digital says the documentary showed no compelling evidence linking Mordecai to the Zodiac crimes. A question raised by a true-crime investigation is not proof, and the coverage does not report an official finding identifying him as the Zodiac Killer.
What evidence and investigation status are reported?
The coverage describes family testimony and circumstantial similarities raised by the documentary, but it does not provide a current official finding that links Mordecai to the Santa Rosa murders. Fox News Digital reported in March 2024 that items attributed to Mordecai had been turned over to the Sonoma County Sheriff’s Office and that the investigation was ongoing at that time. That report is a historical update, not confirmation of the investigation’s present status; no later official update or current DNA-comparison status is established here.

Barter acknowledged the limits of pursuing old cases, telling Fox News Digital: “These cases are very old,” she said. “There’s a lot of evidence that isn’t there anymore. There’s a lot of follow-up that needs to happen. A lot of people have passed away. But I’m still hopeful. Maybe there’s a chance we can finally get some answers for these families.”
