Many fans were surprised by Minaj’s brief 2020 Instagram introduction, which offered little context. Ming later described their relationship as caring but not especially close, and said growing up known as a star’s sibling brought uncomfortable questions and bullying.
Why fans were surprised by Ming
On February 21, 2020, Minaj shared an Instagram video featuring Ming and their father. The caption, reproduced by TheGrio, read: “My Dad & lil sister Ming.” The post did not give Ming’s age or location, and many fans had not known Minaj had a younger sister.
The surprise was not necessarily because Ming had never been mentioned publicly. A Capital XTRA retrospective noted earlier social posts and identified Ming as Minaj’s paternal half-sister. The 2020 video appears to have brought her to wider attention rather than being definitively the first public mention.
Who is Ming Luanli?
Later music coverage uses the name Ming Luanli. That is the name to use when discussing her music identity; Minaj’s 2020 caption called her Ming. The available reports do not establish details such as her current age, so those should not be inferred from the brief introduction.

What Ming has said about her sister
In a June 2024 interview on the We In Miami podcast, Ming spoke about the attention she received at school because she was Nicki Minaj’s sister. HOT 97’s report says classmates asked about Minaj and posed uncomfortable questions, including why Minaj had not done certain things for her. Ming said the experience made her question whether she should sing or rap.
Complex’s coverage reported Ming describing herself as feeling attacked and vulnerable during those school experiences. She also characterized the sisters as “never close,” partly because Minaj was busy and Ming had her own life. That description reflects Ming’s account of their private relationship, not an independently verified assessment.

Her account also included affection and care. HOT 97 reported Ming saying, “She was a good sister. She did check up on me and my dad from time to time.” Complex reported that Ming said she still loved and felt pride in her sister. In other words, her comments described distance without claiming there was no love between them.
Why later comments prompted more speculation
In August 2024, Minaj made remarks during a Stationhead broadcast about an unnamed person speaking about a private person in interviews. Complex reported that fans connected those comments to Ming’s recent podcast appearances, and that Ming publicly said she still loved her sister.

- Established: Minaj’s 2020 caption publicly introduced “lil sister Ming,” and the brief post surprised many fans who had not known about her.
- Attributed to Ming: In 2024, she described school pressure and bullying, and characterized the sisters’ bond as caring but not especially close.
- Unconfirmed: The cause or present state of any private disagreement, and whether Minaj’s unnamed Stationhead remarks referred to Ming.
The confusion is best understood as a sequence: a rare, short introduction drew attention to a sibling many fans did not know about; Ming later discussed the personal effects of that connection; and unnamed remarks by Minaj prompted fresh fan speculation.
