Those reports point to real friction, but they do not establish how often errors occurred or an overall accuracy rate.
What Roblox introduced, and when
Roblox announced its plan on September 4, 2025: expand age estimation to people using communication features by year-end, with facial age estimation, ID age verification and verified parental consent among the methods described. Roblox’s announcement framed the checks as part of its approach to safer communication.
Enforcement began on December 3, 2025, in Australia, New Zealand and the Netherlands. Roblox said users in those regions would need to complete a check to use chat, and it planned to expand to other chat-enabled regions in early January. The company reported that more than 21.4 million users had completed the process voluntarily by December 3. That figure is Roblox’s own report, not an independently audited adoption count.
On January 7, 2026, Roblox announced a global rollout, saying prompts would reach regions where chat was available over the following week. The announcement set out the company’s intended age-based chat design and its stated correction and privacy practices.

How the age checks and chat groups work
Roblox describes facial age estimation as a process that analyzes a facial image and video to place an account in an age group. Its Age Check FAQ lists these groups:
- 5–8
- 9–12
- 13–15
- 16–17
- 18–20
- 21+
The support page also describes government ID verification. For the correction path it documents, ID verification is available to users whose account age is over 13. Roblox identifies Persona as a third-party service partner on that page; that does not establish that Persona is the only service involved or that its role will never change.

Roblox says its default chat design limits communication to users in the same or adjacent age groups, subject to exceptions and features such as Trusted Connections. It says children younger than 9 need parental consent for chat. These are the intended rules for matching accounts, not a guarantee that every form of adult-minor contact or inappropriate interaction is prevented.
Why the early rollout was called chaotic
A parent’s check could put a child in the wrong group
On January 9, Roblox acknowledged on its Developer Forum that cases had occurred in which a parent completed an age check on a child’s account and the child was assigned to the 21+ group. That is a concrete, company-acknowledged misclassification scenario—not merely a hypothetical concern.

Players and developers reported access problems
WIRED’s January 13 report described players complaining that they could no longer chat with friends, developers objecting to the update and asking Roblox to roll it back, and concerns that users could be placed in the wrong age group in either direction. Those accounts document reactions and reported problems, not a representative survey of all Roblox users.
The evidence does not give an overall error rate
Roblox’s January 7 announcement cited a mean absolute error of 1.4 years for users younger than 18, based on testing by the U.K. Age Check Certification Scheme. This is a company-reported laboratory result. Mean absolute error measures the average size of age-estimation differences in that test; it is not the percentage of accounts classified correctly and does not reveal how often rollout users landed in the wrong chat group. The available reports do not quantify system-wide false positives, false negatives or appeal outcomes.

What to do if Roblox gets an age check wrong
Roblox documents different routes for correcting an age result. The available option can depend on the account and the user’s situation:
- Use ID verification: The support FAQ describes government ID verification for users whose account age is over 13. Roblox’s January announcement also lists ID verification as an appeal route.
- Ask a linked parent to correct a child’s birthday: A parent account linked to the child’s account can update the birthday, subject to Roblox’s stated age and frequency limits in the support FAQ.
- Check the grace period for a particular mismatch: If a user self-reports as over 13 but facial estimation places them under 13, Roblox says a 48-hour grace period applies before the age group is officially updated, unless the user accepts the result sooner.
These are Roblox’s documented correction procedures; the cited material does not measure how quickly or successfully users resolve errors through them.

What Roblox says about privacy—and what that does not establish
Roblox says facial images and video are deleted immediately after secure processing, and its support FAQ says Roblox does not receive or store biometric data. The Associated Press report of November 18, 2025 also relayed Roblox’s statement that video is deleted after processing. These are company claims; the cited material does not independently audit data handling or retention.
Age checks are one safety measure, not a complete safety system
Roblox presents age checking as one layer alongside moderation, filters, policies and reporting tools. Its September announcement described the plan as part of broader safety work, while its December announcement also placed the checks within a layered approach. Age assurance estimates or verifies an account holder’s age; it is distinct from moderating content and from addressing every risk of interaction on a platform.
Roblox’s January 7 statement explicitly said no system can prevent all objectionable content from appearing. Age groups can shape which accounts can communicate by default, but the cited sources do not show that age checks alone prevent grooming, evasion or exposure to inappropriate behavior.
What Roblox reported about adoption and short-term effects
In its Q4 and FY 2025 shareholder letter, Roblox said that by January 31, 2026, 45% of global daily active users had completed an age check. Among checked users, the company reported 35% under 13, 38% ages 13–17 and 27% over 18. These are company-reported figures, not independently audited estimates.
The same letter attributed a mid-single-digit headwind to engagement growth and a low-single-digit headwind to bookings growth to the short-term rollout effects. Those descriptions concern the company’s reported business results; they do not measure the system’s accuracy or the prevalence of user complaints.
