Hoda Kotb left her daily TODAY anchor role on January 10, 2025, after announcing in September 2024 that she wanted more time with her daughters and mother. She said turning 60 prompted her to reflect on what she wanted from the next phase of her life. Craig Melvin succeeded her as co-anchor of the show’s first two hours.
Why did Hoda Kotb leave TODAY?
Kotb publicly explained her decision as a choice to make more room for family and a new stage of life—not as a response to a stated workplace or financial issue. In a staff memo reported by the Associated Press on September 26, 2024, she wrote: “my broadcast career has been beyond meaningful, a new decade of my life lies ahead, and now my daughters and my mom need and deserve a bigger slice of my time pie.” The Associated Press reported the announcement and memo.
Speaking on air, Kotb said she had realized it was time to “turn the page at 60, and to try something new.” She also said that, having had her children later in life, she felt they deserved more of her finite time. Scripps News reported her remarks. Kotb described the decision as “the hardest thing in the world,” according to AP.

Melvin’s appointment concerned Kotb’s first-two-hours anchor position; it should not be confused with the separate fourth-hour co-host role. AP’s November 2024 report on Melvin’s appointment identifies the hours he was selected to anchor.
Did Kotb leave NBC entirely?
Not according to her announcement. Kotb said she planned to remain part of NBC, but the September 2024 announcement coverage did not specify a subsequent title or regular on-air assignment. The confirmed change was her departure from the daily TODAY anchor job.

How Kotb described her approach to career changes
In an interview republished by NBCUniversal on January 8, 2025, Kotb said she had not mapped out a fixed career trajectory. “I kept following the road and the road led here,” she said. She also described a simple test for future work: “If I love it, that’ll be my litmus test.” These were reflections on her career path, not an announcement of a specific next NBC role.
