Suni Lee has described sudden, severe swelling, months of uncertainty about her diagnosis, a 2024 report that her condition was in remission and under control, and a 2025 reflection that kidney disease cannot be cured but can be treated. She has not publicly named the specific kidney diseases in the sources cited here, and her 2024 status report should not be read as a current medical update.
What kidney disease does Suni Lee have?
Lee has not publicly identified the specific kidney diseases she has in the sources cited here. In 2023, she said she was keeping the diagnosis private because her medical team’s understanding could change as they learned more. At the 2024 Team USA Media Summit, she again said she was not ready to disclose it. In 2025, she wrote that she had two rare kidney diseases, but the report quoting her essay did not name them. No subtype should be inferred from those statements.
How her symptoms began and affected gymnastics
February and March 2023: sudden swelling and uncertainty
In a retrospective interview with SELF, Lee said she woke in February 2023 with swollen ankles and initially blamed training. The next morning, swelling had spread to her face, hands and legs. She recalled gaining “like, 40 pounds” and said swollen fingers made it difficult to hold the uneven bars.
Doctors initially suspected an allergic reaction, SELF reported, but the symptoms continued. Lee missed an NCAA meet and described the fear of not knowing what was wrong. The diagnosis was kept private while her medical team investigated.

Stepping away, then returning
The American Kidney Fund says Lee disclosed kidney disease of unknown origin in 2023 and paused competition to focus on her health. She later returned to competition. Her experience was not a promise about how another athlete’s or patient’s illness will progress; Lee’s diagnosis and treatment were personal.
What Lee said about her health in 2024
April: remission and a return to gymnastics
At the Team USA Media Summit in April 2024, Lee said she was in remission and excited to compete again, while emphasizing that she was not ready to share her diagnosis. NBC Olympics quoted her: “My doctor was telling me he didn’t think I’d be able to do gymnastics ever again, so to even be here is an accomplishment in itself. And I’m super proud of myself. I try not to listen to the outsiders because people don’t know what my diagnosis is … I don’t feel ready to expose that until after … Right now I’m in remission and excited to get back out there.”

Speaking to the Associated Press on April 17, 2024, Lee recalled the physical effects: “I could not bend my legs the slightest, I couldn’t squeeze my fingers, my face was swollen,” and, “I looked like a completely different person. It was very, very miserable.” She said she had retained 45 pounds of water weight. That figure is Lee’s account of her own illness, not a general measure of kidney disease.
Lee also told AP, “We have it under control now,” and, “We know what to do and the right medication to take.” These were her statements about her condition and care at that time; they do not establish her present health status.

July: kidney-health awareness
In July 2024, the American Kidney Fund announced Lee’s participation in its Know Your Kidneys initiative. Lee said her diagnosis had “turned the world that I knew upside-down.” She encouraged people to learn about kidney health and advocate for a treatment plan that helps them live well. AKF says its initiative offers information about testing options, genetic counseling, clinical trials and discussing the cause of kidney disease with a doctor. In the same announcement, AKF said up to 15% of people with kidney disease do not know its cause; that organizational figure does not indicate anything about Lee’s diagnosis.
What Lee meant when she said kidney disease cannot be cured
In March 2025, Good Morning America reported on Lee’s essay for Women’s Health. Lee wrote, “Kidney disease cannot be cured.” She also explained that it can be treated, particularly when there is an accurate diagnosis. In the essay, she described the difficulty of knowing she would live with the condition for life and of facing that she would not be the same person she was before becoming ill.

Her words hold both parts of her account: the disease, as she described it, is not curable, but treatment matters. They express Lee’s experience and perspective, not individualized medical advice for anyone else.
