Tatiana Schlossberg’s New Yorker essay, “A Battle with My Blood,” recounts her acute myeloid leukemia diagnosis after giving birth and argues that her reliance on medical care and research shaped her fears about health policy under her cousin, Robert F. Kennedy Jr. It was a personal account and political criticism, not an independent audit of the policies she described. New Yorker coverage published in January 2026 later reported that Schlossberg had died at 35.
What is “A Battle with My Blood” about?
Schlossberg published “A Battle with My Blood” in The New Yorker’s Weekend Essay section on November 22, 2025. The print edition, dated December 8, 2025, ran under the headline “A Further Shore.” She was an environmental journalist and the author of Inconspicuous Consumption: The Environmental Impact You Don’t Know About. The essay combines a first-person account of illness with an argument about the importance of research, clinical care, and access to treatment. Schlossberg writes from the perspective of a patient whose life depended on clinicians, trials, transfusions, and other forms of medical support. Her descriptions establish what she experienced and feared; they should not be treated on their own as independent proof of the scope or effects of government policy.
What cancer diagnosis did Schlossberg describe?
Schlossberg writes that her daughter was born on May 25, 2024. A blood count taken a few hours later was extraordinarily high. After doctors considered whether the result might be related to pregnancy and delivery, she says they diagnosed her with acute myeloid leukemia (AML) with a rare Inversion 3 mutation. These details come from her essay rather than independently reviewed medical records.

Treatment, relapse, and clinical trials
She recounts chemotherapy and a first bone-marrow transplant using cells from her sister. After a period of remission, the leukemia returned. Schlossberg then describes joining a CAR-T-cell clinical trial, receiving a second transplant from an unrelated donor, relapsing again, and entering another trial. She also writes about graft-versus-host disease and a severe illness caused by Epstein-Barr virus.
In the latest trial described in the essay, Schlossberg says her doctor told her he might be able to keep her alive for a year. That was the prognosis she reported when the essay was published; it is not a current health update. In January 2026, The New Yorker published a later page reporting that she had died at age 35. The care behind the treatment
Schlossberg emphasizes that treatment meant more than a sequence of procedures: she depended on nurses, physicians, researchers, insurance, transfusions, and access to trials. She also describes receiving misoprostol during a postpartum hemorrhage and says that experience heightened her concern about what restricted availability might mean for other patients.
What did Schlossberg say about RFK Jr.?
Schlossberg criticized her cousin Robert F. Kennedy Jr. as he was being nominated and confirmed as Secretary of Health and Human Services while she was undergoing CAR-T treatment. She recounts her mother’s opposition to his confirmation and her brother’s public criticism, then links her own dependence on medical care and research to worries about the direction of federal health policy. She called Kennedy “an embarrassment to me and the rest of my immediate family.”

Her concerns included research funding, vaccine access for people left immunocompromised after a transplant, preventive screening guidance, and the future of medical trials. She attributes to Kennedy and the administration reductions to mRNA vaccine research and NIH funding, canceled grants and trials, a threatened change to a cancer-screening advisory panel, and FDA review of misoprostol. Those are claims made in her essay; the essay alone does not establish each action’s legal status, full scope, dollar amount, or downstream effect.

Schlossberg argues that treatments patients rely on emerge from long chains of scientific work. She writes that CAR-T treatment developed over many years with government funding, and that cytarabine, a chemotherapy drug she received, traces to a Caribbean sponge and research at the University of California, Berkeley. These points are part of her account and argument in the essay, rather than independently documented findings here.

Her political criticism follows from that personal connection: she presents research and access to care not as abstractions, but as conditions that mattered directly to her treatment. The essay is therefore both a record of her illness and a warning about what she feared could happen to patients if research, prevention, or access were weakened.
