It stars Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba and Ariana Grande-Butera as Glinda, with Jon M. Chu directing. Its follow-up, Wicked: For Good, opened November 21, 2025, and began streaming on Peacock in the United States on March 20, 2026, according to NBCUniversal.
When did Wicked come out?
The first Wicked film opened in U.S. theaters on November 22, 2024. Universal lists its runtime as 2 hours and 40 minutes and its rating as PG for some scary action, thematic material, and brief suggestive material. The studio classifies it as drama, family, musical, and fantasy.
The story follows the unlikely friendship between Elphaba and Glinda at Shiz University, then the different paths they take after encountering the Wizard of Oz. Director Jon M. Chu adapted the stage musical as two full-length films; NBCUniversal said the nearly three-hour stage production could not be condensed into one movie without compromising its story or songs. NBCUniversal’s guide to the films describes the decision to honor the musical’s two-act structure.
