Madison Chock and Evan Bates were already dating when they competed together at the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics. The ice dancers had first gone on a date when Chock was 16, later became skating partners, and eventually began a relationship. They got engaged in June 2022 and married in Hawaii in June 2024.
How Chock and Bates went from a teenage date to skating partners
Chock and Bates knew one another before their partnership became romantic. Team USA reports that they went on a date when Chock was 16, but did not start a relationship then. They teamed up as ice-dance partners in 2011 and later began dating again; Team USA’s 2022 Olympic coverage places the start of their romantic partnership at about 2017, rather than giving a more exact date. Team USA’s engagement report and its Beijing Olympics feature recount the sequence.
They spoke publicly about being a couple on NBC’s Today in 2018. Chock said skating together felt “completely genuine and real,” and that being together both on and off the ice brought them closer. Their story therefore has two intertwined timelines: a long-running professional partnership and a later romantic relationship.
What their relationship was like at Beijing 2022
Beijing was the pair’s third Olympic Winter Games together. Their free dance, titled “Lovers in Outer Space,” was set to Daft Punk music and told a story about two different beings finding love and acceptance. Chock described its central idea as “finding love and acceptance with someone who is different than you.” The program’s theme echoed their own public story, though it was presented as an artistic narrative. Team USA’s February 2022 report covers the program and their Games.

Competition still shaped their Valentine’s Day. Bates joked, “There is no candlelight dinner. … Maybe I’ll go to the gift shop and see if I can get something there.” The remark captured the practical demands of competing at the Olympics, rather than suggesting that the couple’s relationship was a performance separate from their work.
How Chock and Bates did at the 2022 Winter Olympics
Their Olympic results differed by event: Chock and Bates won silver as part of the U.S. figure-skating team in the team event, then finished fourth in individual ice dance. Those are separate results, not a silver medal in the individual competition. Team USA’s June 2022 report also recorded three U.S. titles and three World Championships medals for the pair through 2022; that is a dated tally, not a current career total.

When they got engaged and married
Chock and Bates became engaged in June 2022 while vacationing in Thailand. Chock announced the news with the line, “Left home with my boyfriend, coming back with my fiancé!” The engagement came after the Beijing Games, not during them. Team USA reported the announcement on June 16, 2022.
They married in Hawaii in June 2024. The International Skating Union noted the wedding on June 28, 2024, and Chock’s Team USA profile also identifies Hawaii as the setting. The wedding is complete, not a future plan mentioned in older Olympic-era coverage. See the ISU’s June 2024 wedding-season roundup and Chock’s Team USA profile.
