That leaves its availability uncertain—not proof that the film has been canceled.

The report’s mention of disc and streaming availability applies to Chapter 1, not the sequel. Check official distributor announcements for any later change.

The available evidence does not establish that it has been canceled. It establishes that its August 2024 theatrical date was postponed and that, according to the July 16, 2026 report, it had not moved beyond festival screenings by then. What is the film about?
Directed by Kevin Costner, Chapter 2 is part of a planned Western saga set across the Civil War years, 1861–1865. The Venice festival describes the larger story as tracing a New Mexico Territory river settlement through the perspectives of settlers and soldiers, rail magnates and cattle traders, Indigenous Americans, and Chinese migrant workers. Costner described its central theme as “the story of the great migration across America.” La Biennale di Venezia, premiere announcement.
The official Venice listing gives the film a 190-minute running time and credits Jon Baird and Kevin Costner with the screenplay. Principal cast members listed include Costner, Sienna Miller, Sam Worthington, Giovanni Ribisi, Luke Wilson, Isabelle Fuhrman, Abbey Lee, Will Patton, and Ella Hunt. What is the status of the wider Horizon saga?
Costner said in a May 2024 AP interview that scripts for Parts 3 and 4 were ready and that he had filmed three days of Chapter 3, while still needing to find money to finish it. He also recalled expecting installments every four or five months. Those were remarks made before Chapter 2’s postponement, not a current production schedule. Associated Press, May 19, 2024.
The July 2026 Tribune News Service report described Chapter 3 as partly completed and Chapter 4 as not completed, and said Costner had expressed an intention to finish the films without a guarantee of when or whether financing would be secured. That account indicates uncertainty about the larger project, not a confirmed timetable for the sequel’s release. Daily Herald / Tribune News Service, July 16, 2026.
