In financial reporting, an asset is a present economic resource controlled by an entity as a result of past events. This article uses that accounting meaning because the title alone does not identify a particular documentary, film, book or other work called The Asset.
What is an asset in financial reporting?
The Australian Accounting Standards Board defines an asset as “a present economic resource controlled by the entity as a result of past events.” The definition appears in paragraph 4.3 of its Conceptual Framework.
Each part matters. The resource must be present, the entity must control it, and that control must result from past events. An asset is therefore not simply anything that seems valuable, nor does the definition require the entity to physically possess an object.
Economic resource means a right with potential
The framework explains that an economic resource is a right that has the potential to produce economic benefits. The benefits need not already have been realized for the right to meet this part of the definition; the focus is on its potential. This explanation is in paragraph 4.4 of the same AASB framework.

How are assets different from liabilities and equity?
Assets, liabilities and equity are distinct elements of financial position, not interchangeable labels. In the AASB framework, equity is the residual interest in the assets after deducting liabilities. That relationship does not make equity another name for assets, or make assets synonymous with net worth.
How national accounts use the term
National accounts use related language but frame the concept around stores of value and ownership. The Australian Bureau of Statistics describes assets as stores of value over which ownership rights are enforced, from which owners may derive economic benefits over time. Its glossary is for the 2020–21 reference period (ABS glossary).

Statistics Canada’s 2016 explanation also describes an asset as a store of value representing benefits to its economic owner over time (Statistics Canada concepts, definitions and classifications). These national accounts descriptions are related to the financial reporting definition, but they belong to a different framework and should not be treated as identical wording.

What does the title “The Asset” refer to?
The title by itself does not establish a specific work or subject. Here, “asset” means the financial reporting concept; it should not be read as identifying a documentary or other work with that title. The meaning can vary with context: accounting frameworks focus on controlled economic resources, while national accounts descriptions emphasize stores of value and ownership.
