Jeff Bezos’ ex-wife is MacKenzie Scott, an American novelist and philanthropist. They married in 1993 and divorced in 2019 after 25 years of marriage. Scott also worked in Amazon’s early years, published two novels, and has become known for large-scale charitable giving.
Who is MacKenzie Scott?
Scott was born in San Francisco in 1970. She graduated from Princeton in 1992 with a degree in English, studied under novelist Toni Morrison, and worked as Morrison’s research assistant. Bloomberg’s biographical profile reports that Scott began working as a research associate at D.E. Shaw in New York in 1992, where she met Bezos.
Her marriage to Jeff Bezos and Amazon’s early years
Scott and Bezos married in 1993 and moved to Seattle in 1994. She was involved in Amazon’s early founding, including work as an accountant and negotiating an early freight contract, according to Bloomberg. These contributions were part of the company’s early history; they do not make her its sole founder.
The couple announced their separation in January 2019, and their divorce was finalized that year. Forbes reports that Scott received a 4% stake in Amazon as part of the settlement. That describes the 2019 arrangement, not her present-day shareholding.

In a statement quoted by Bloomberg, Scott described what she relinquished: “Happy to be giving him all of my interests in the Washington Post and Blue Origin, and 75% of our Amazon stock plus voting control of my shares.” The statement concerns the divorce terms; it should not be read as a current account of her assets.
Scott’s novels
Scott is also a novelist. She published The Testing of Luther Albright in 2005 and Traps in 2013. Bloomberg reports that The Testing of Luther Albright won an American Book Award. Her writing career is distinct from her work in business and philanthropy.

MacKenzie Scott’s philanthropy
Forbes reports that Scott signed the Giving Pledge in May 2019, committing to give away at least half her wealth over her lifetime. Her giving has drawn attention for large grants that recipients can generally use without restrictions, although grant terms and reporting can vary.
The totals reported by different outlets reflect different dates. The Associated Press reported in 2025 that Scott disclosed $7.1 billion in gifts that year and had given a reported $26.3 billion since 2019. Forbes’s profile, updated September 15, 2026, put the total at $26.4 billion to more than 2,700 nonprofits. These are dated reports, not a single independently audited ledger: AP noted that independent tracking is difficult because Scott does not have a public foundation.

Scott’s public profile is often introduced through her marriage to Bezos and the Amazon settlement. Her biography also includes early work at Amazon, two published novels, and a substantial philanthropic program. Keeping those strands separate gives a fuller account than treating her only as Bezos’s former spouse.
