What happened, and when?
- October 2025: Naroditsky, an American chess grandmaster, was found dead at his home in Charlotte, North Carolina, at age 29. At the time, police were reported to be investigating possible overdose or suicide; no cause of death had been made public. CBS News/AFP reported on the early investigation.
- January 2026: News outlets reported findings from the medical examiner. The Guardian’s January 22 account described the death as accidental and gave the probable cause as cardiac arrhythmia associated with systemic sarcoidosis. The Guardian’s detailed account and the Associated Press’s January 21 report covered the findings.
What did the medical examiner’s findings say?
According to The Guardian’s account of the examiner’s findings, the probable cause was a cardiac arrhythmia associated with systemic sarcoidosis that had not previously been diagnosed. Methamphetamine and kratom, also known as mitragynine, were listed as contributing conditions.
The report was described as saying that the detected levels of those substances were not considered toxic or lethal on their own. It also found no evidence of intentional or unintentional overdose. That distinction matters: a substance being detected does not, by itself, mean the examiner determined that a fatal overdose occurred.
The AP headline described the death as resulting from an abnormal heartbeat “from accidental overdose,” and WCCB Charlotte used the phrase “accidental poisoning.” Those headlines are shorthand; the more detailed account describes arrhythmia associated with sarcoidosis as the probable cause, substances as contributing conditions, and no evidence of overdose. Why was the death initially investigated as possible suicide or overdose?
Those were possibilities reported during the early police investigation, before a cause had been made public. They were not the final determination described in the later coverage of the medical examiner’s findings. CBS News/AFP quoted a sentence attributed to the examiner’s report: “There is no evidence for intentional or unintentional overdose on illicit, prescription, and/or over-the-counter substances.”
The Guardian reported that the examiner considered stress related to cheating allegations while evaluating possible overdose or suicide, but found no evidence supporting either. The AP reported that the allegations were not proven and that Naroditsky denied them. The reported findings do not establish that the allegations caused his death.

What are the limits of the reported findings?
The primary medical examiner report and complete toxicology values were not directly available in the reporting reviewed here. The detailed account in The Guardian said no autopsy was performed and described the conclusion as based on the totality of radiographic, toxicological, and circumstantial evidence. The specific medical findings should therefore be understood as reported descriptions of the examiner’s conclusion, not as an independent review of the full case file.

Naroditsky was a chess grandmaster, educator, and streamer whose livestreams and commentary helped bring chess to a wider audience. The AP reported that he became a grandmaster at 18. CBS News/AFP, citing US Chess, reported that he published Mastering Positional Chess at 14.

His family asked people to remember his love for chess and the inspiration he brought to others. In a statement shared by the Charlotte Chess Center and reported by the AP, the family said: “Let us remember Daniel for his passion and love for the game of chess, and for the joy and inspiration he brought to us all every day.”
