This is an editorial ranking, not a poll or an industry consensus. “Modern” here means hosts whose defining late-night work began in the 1980s or later, including recent hosts whose shows have ended.
The comparison includes both desk-and-guest talk shows and satire-forward programs such as The Daily Show. Traditional late night commonly combines topical monologues, sketches or recurring bits, interviews and musical performances; satire shows put different weight on those elements. The ranking weighs comic originality, command of format, interview skill, influence on comedy and the strength of each host’s late-night work. A host can excel in one mode without being directly comparable to every other one.
1. Conan O’Brien
Conan O’Brien’s great late-night asset was a comic sensibility that made the machinery of a talk show part of the joke. His humor could be cerebral, awkward and deliberately absurd, but it was also nimble enough to turn an interview or a small on-air mishap into a comic set piece. That unpredictability distinguished his desk-and-guest work from hosts whose strongest material depended on a polished monologue or a celebrity’s willingness to play along.
His career also spans a substantial stretch of the modern format. The Television Academy records that NBC tapped him to host Late Night in 1993, and that he concluded his 11-year run with CONAN on TBS in 2021, ending a 28-year late-night hosting career. The Academy lists five Emmy Awards and seven Writers Guild Awards for O’Brien. Those honors mark recognition, but his place at the top rests on the distinctive comic world he built across the format.

2. David Letterman
David Letterman made late night feel less like a formal parade of guests and more like a comedy show with a host who might puncture its rituals at any moment. His dry delivery, ironic distance and appetite for oddball bits became a durable alternative to the smoother, more conventional host persona. His influence is especially clear in the way later hosts treated the desk, the monologue and the show’s own conventions as material.
Letterman ranks below O’Brien here because this list gives extra weight to range across the whole format: comic voice, interviews, recurring material and sustained reinvention. His signature approach was enormously influential, but its cool, sardonic tone is not as expansive a measure of late-night craft as the first-place entry’s blend of absurdity and interaction.
3. Jon Stewart
Jon Stewart’s defining strength was making a late-night show function as both comedy and political interpretation. As host of The Daily Show, he helped establish a satire-forward model in which topical commentary and correspondents’ segments, rather than a conventional celebrity-interview sequence, carried much of the program’s identity. That format is not identical to a traditional talk show, but it belongs in a modern ranking because it changed what audiences could expect from late-night comedy.
Stewart ranks highly for the clarity and force of his comic point of view, as well as the influence of the show’s news-satire approach on subsequent comedy. He places behind the top two because this ranking values breadth across the familiar host toolkit, including interviews and variety, not only the potency of topical satire.

4. Stephen Colbert
Stephen Colbert’s late-night work joined a sharply defined satirical persona with the demands of a mainstream network desk show. His career moved from the character-driven political comedy of The Colbert Report to hosting The Late Show, where the comic performance shared space with interviews and topical material. That shift makes him one of the more versatile figures on this list.
In a May 2026 analysis, The Atlantic’s David Sims described Colbert’s interview style as sincere and intellectually engaged, and situated his place in the form alongside David Letterman and Conan O’Brien. That is a critic’s interpretation, rather than an objective measure, but it captures a real distinction in his on-air manner: the satirical edge did not prevent him from giving conversation room to become serious. The Late Show concluded on May 21, 2026, so Colbert is a recent former host, not a current host.
5. Craig Ferguson
Craig Ferguson brought a conversational looseness to The Late Late Show that made the interview feel less like a promotional stop and more like an unscripted exchange. His humor could be self-deprecating and eccentric, and his willingness to let a conversation wander offered a contrast to the tightly controlled rhythm of many desk shows.
He ranks here for his distinct host presence and the way he made interview chemistry central to the format. He is not higher because this list also weighs broader influence and the range of a host’s work across monologues, recurring bits and cultural reach.

6. Jimmy Kimmel
Jimmy Kimmel’s approach has long paired a conventional host’s toolkit—monologue, interviews and recurring comedy—with a willingness to make the show’s own production and public persona part of the entertainment. His best-known work is accessible without being limited to celebrity promotion: the host’s reactions and the audience’s recognition of a bit’s setup are often part of the joke.
Kimmel’s ranking reflects consistency in the mainstream desk-and-guest format rather than a claim that he has redefined it more radically than the hosts above him. Current status can change quickly: the AP-NORC survey reported by the Associated Press in September 2025 was fielded after the announcement that Colbert’s show would end but before Kimmel’s suspension, so its audience figures should not be read as a later snapshot of his program.
7. Seth Meyers
Seth Meyers brings a writer’s precision to late night. Before hosting Late Night with Seth Meyers, he was a head writer at Saturday Night Live and a host of its Weekend Update segment—background that helps explain the show’s emphasis on topical jokes and carefully built comic arguments. He ranks above hosts whose appeal depends more heavily on a single persona because his writing voice is so central to the program.
The Television Academy identifies Meyers as the current host of Late Night with Seth Meyers and records a 2025 award for Late Night with Seth Meyers: Corrections, a short-form extension of the show. This list puts him seventh because his late-night body of work is still developing against the longer histories of the hosts ranked above him.

8. Trevor Noah
Trevor Noah brought an international perspective and a performer’s ease to The Daily Show, a program built around news satire rather than the full conventional talk-show mix. His background offered a different vantage point on American politics and culture, while his relaxed delivery made topical material approachable for viewers who might not want the show to feel like a lecture.
Noah ranks here for adapting a satire institution to his own voice and for balancing commentary with a lighter, more conversational presence. His late-night work is only one part of a broader career: his official biography identifies him as a former host of The Daily Show, author of Born a Crime and Into the Uncut Grass, and host of the weekly SiriusXM podcast What Now? with Trevor Noah.

Jimmy Fallon’s strongest late-night mode is play. His shows lean into musical comedy, games, impressions and bits designed to produce moments that can travel beyond the full broadcast. That makes him a useful counterpoint to the hosts ranked above him: the central appeal is often variety and participation rather than a singular satirical argument or an unusually probing interview.
The ranking places Fallon ninth because it gives more weight to comic originality and sustained influence on the wider form than to clip-friendly entertainment alone. Peacock’s May 16, 2025 streaming guide listed The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon and Late Night with Seth Meyers; that supports only a dated, limited note about those titles, not a guarantee of current availability in every region.

10. Arsenio Hall
Arsenio Hall earns the final place for helping widen the image and energy of the mainstream late-night host. His audience-facing style and the show’s distinctive relationship with pop culture gave the format a different center of gravity from the established network model. His work matters not because every later host followed his exact approach, but because late night is more than a monologue and a succession of familiar celebrity guests.
Hall rounds out this ranking as a figure of format and cultural importance, even though the available evidence here does not establish a common, source-based scorecard for comparing his full run with the other hosts. The order is a critical judgment, not a definitive verdict on every era or style.
What “best” means in this ranking
Late night is not one contest with a single objective winner. A host who excels at political satire may be less focused on celebrity interviews; a host who thrives on games and musical bits may be less interested in building a sustained topical argument. The ranking therefore balances several kinds of achievement rather than pretending that every program uses the same format.
- Comic voice: Is the host’s humor recognizable and original?
- Format command: Does the host make monologues, sketches, recurring segments or variety material work?
- Interview skill: Can the host create a conversation with energy or substance?
- Influence: Did the work help shape later comedy or expand expectations for late night?
- Body of work: How strong and consistent is the host’s late-night run?
How the audience watches late night now
A September 2025 AP-NORC Center survey, reported by the Associated Press, found that about one-quarter of U.S. adults had watched a late-night talk or variety show at least monthly in the prior year, while about six in ten had watched clips. The survey followed the announcement that Colbert’s show would be canceled and preceded Kimmel’s suspension. It describes U.S. viewing habits at that time; it does not rank hosts or measure the audience in 2026. The gap between full-show and clip viewing also helps explain why some hosts build their reputations through a complete interview or monologue, while others are especially associated with short, shareable segments.
