To send a MediaMTX stream to YouTube Live, configure outbound forwarding for the MediaMTX path carrying your source, and point it to YouTube’s RTMPS ingest URL with the current stream key from YouTube Live Control Room. The key distinction: rtmpAddress and rtmpsAddress configure MediaMTX’s inbound listeners; they do not set the outbound destination to YouTube.
How MediaMTX forwards a stream to YouTube
The stream travels through two separate connections: an encoder or other client publishes to a MediaMTX path, then MediaMTX forwards that path to YouTube. MediaMTX documents RTMPS forwarding to YouTube at its stream-forwarding guide. Its configuration reference describes server-side RTMP settings such as rtmpAddress, rtmpsAddress, rtmpEncryption, rtmpServerKey, and rtmpServerCert; these are listener and certificate controls, not substitutes for the forwarding destination.
The two links in the chain
- Into MediaMTX: an encoder such as FFmpeg or OBS publishes to a MediaMTX path.
- Out of MediaMTX: forwarding sends the stream from that path to YouTube’s RTMPS ingest endpoint.
MediaMTX’s client publication examples are documented for RTMP clients and OBS Studio. Set up that incoming connection separately from the YouTube forwarding rule.
Configure the outbound YouTube destination
- Find the path receiving your source. Use the path name configured in your MediaMTX setup. The forwarding rule must apply to the path where the encoder actually publishes.
- Get the current YouTube ingest details. Open YouTube Live Control Room for the channel or event and copy its current stream key. Do not use a sample key, publish the real key in a configuration shared with others, or assume an old key remains valid.
- Set the forwarding destination. MediaMTX documents this destination format:
rtmps://a.rtmp.youtube.com/live2#YOUR_STREAM_KEY. ReplaceYOUR_STREAM_KEYwith the key for your stream. The#and key are part of the documented destination format. - Apply the rule to the source path. Configure forwarding for the MediaMTX path carrying the stream, following the syntax for your installed release. The destination alone does not identify which incoming path should be forwarded.
- Validate and apply the configuration. MediaMTX supports configuration through its file, environment-variable overrides, and Control API, and documents validation and reload behavior. Check the syntax and validation command for your installed version in the configuration guide; the online reference tracks the latest release and may not match an older installation.
YouTube recommends RTMPS, the secure extension of RTMP. Its encoder settings guidance says, “We recommend streaming to YouTube Live with RTMPS, a secure extension to the popular RTMP streaming video protocol.”

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Check the source encoder settings separately
Forwarding does not establish that the source stream meets YouTube’s encoding requirements, and the forwarding setup should not be treated as transcoding incompatible media. Choose and verify the source encoder’s video and audio format before starting. YouTube’s current Help Center guidance, accessed in 2026, lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 for RTMP/RTMPS video, up to 60 fps, constant bitrate (CBR), and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. Audio options include AAC or MP3; AAC is required for 5.1 surround over RTMP/RTMPS.
Published H.264 bitrate recommendations
| Video mode | YouTube-recommended bitrate |
|---|---|
| 1080p60 | 17 Mbps |
| 1080p30 | 14 Mbps |
| 720p60 | 8 Mbps |
| 720p30 | 8 Mbps |
These are YouTube recommendations, not guarantees of picture quality. Check the full current table for your codec, resolution, and frame rate, and make sure your available upload bandwidth can sustain the chosen bitrate. YouTube advises testing with representative audio and motion, monitoring stream health, and reading Live Control Room messages during the event.

Troubleshoot a stream that does not reach YouTube
- No source arrives in MediaMTX: confirm that the encoder is publishing to the intended MediaMTX address and path, and that the path name matches the forwarding rule.
- The source reaches MediaMTX, but YouTube does not: check that the outbound destination uses the documented RTMPS format and the current key for the correct channel or event. Keep the inbound listener settings separate from this destination.
- YouTube receives the stream but reports an encoding problem: inspect the source encoder’s codec, bitrate, frame rate, keyframe interval, and audio format against YouTube’s current guidance. Forwarding does not correct an unsuitable source format.
- The configuration fails validation or reload: check the configuration syntax against the MediaMTX release you have installed and use that release’s documented validation and reload procedure.
- The stream starts but health is poor or unstable: test with representative content, verify that upload bandwidth can support the selected bitrate, and use stream-health indicators and messages in YouTube Live Control Room to narrow down the issue.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is an always-on YouTube channel built from uploaded recordings, StreamNeo is a hosted alternative to maintaining a MediaMTX forwarding setup on your own machine. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live; StreamNeo loops the uploaded video from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. It streams the video as uploaded, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card required. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month.
StreamNeo plays uploaded videos rather than broadcasting a camera feed, and it streams to YouTube only. See StreamNeo for details, then start your free first day.
