SRS YouTube Stream Keeps Disconnecting: Check RTMP and Network Settings

When an SRS YouTube stream keeps disconnecting, isolate the failing link before changing settings: check who is affected, encoder output, SRS logs, ingest protocol, and outbound connectivity.

If your SRS-fed YouTube stream keeps disconnecting, do not start by changing bitrate. First find out whether the failure is in the encoder, SRS, the YouTube ingest connection, the outbound network, or only a viewer’s connection. Compare what happens at the encoder with SRS logs and YouTube Live Control Room at the exact time of a drop; each check narrows down a different link in the chain.

Why does my YouTube stream keep disconnecting?

A YouTube stream can appear to disconnect for several different reasons. The encoder may stop publishing; the SRS process or its publishing path may fail; the URL, protocol, or stream key may be wrong; the outbound connection to YouTube may be unstable; or the stream may be healthy while one viewer has a local problem. A symptom alone does not identify the cause, and the available guidance does not establish one setting that fixes every SRS-to-YouTube interruption.

Start by establishing who sees the failure. YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting guidance distinguishes among reports from one viewer, viewers sharing a network, and viewers on different networks:

  • One viewer reports a problem: investigate that viewer’s device or connection first.
  • Several affected viewers share one internet connection: their shared viewer network is a likely place to investigate.
  • Viewers on different connections report the same interruption: check the encoder and publishing path, including SRS.
  • The creator’s encoder or stream status also shows a drop: inspect the upstream publishing chain rather than treating it as a viewer-only issue.

These patterns help prioritize checks; they are not proof of a cause. Note the time of each interruption and whether the encoder, SRS, YouTube, or only viewers report it.

Why does OBS keep disconnecting and reconnecting to YouTube?

OBS is only one possible link in the chain. If OBS publishes to SRS and SRS forwards the stream to YouTube, check each connection separately: OBS to SRS, the SRS process and logs, then SRS to YouTube. If OBS publishes directly to YouTube, focus on the encoder’s local output, the ingest URL and protocol, and the outbound connection. A reconnect message by itself does not tell you which connection failed.

Check the encoder’s local output

  1. Update the encoder software. YouTube recommends making sure the encoder is current. The exact menu or update steps depend on the encoder and operating system.
  2. Inspect the stream directly in the encoder. Check whether local picture and sound remain clean at the time YouTube viewers report a problem.
  3. If the local output is poor, inspect the source path, encoder errors, and CPU load. Make a local recording and review it: it can help distinguish a problem already present in the encoded output from one introduced later in the publishing chain.
  4. If the local recording is clean but the symptoms continue, YouTube suggests trying a different encoder. Treat this as a diagnostic comparison, not a guaranteed fix.

If the encoder’s picture and sound look healthy, move downstream to SRS, ingest settings, and the outbound connection.

Check that SRS is running and inspect its logs

SRS is a server in the media path, not just a setting inside the encoder. Confirm that its process stays up, then inspect its logs around the precise time of each interruption. The SRS Linux usage wiki shows basic process-status and log checks, including following objs/srs.log, and provides a sample FFmpeg publish to an SRS RTMP URL.

  1. Check process status using the method for your deployment. The wiki describes a process check, but the service name and command vary with installation, container, and supervisor setup.
  2. Find the SRS log location for your installation. The wiki’s objs/srs.log path is an example, not a universal path. Follow the relevant log and examine entries immediately before, during, and after the drop.
  3. Compare timestamps across systems. Align encoder messages, SRS entries, and YouTube’s stream status. A close match can help identify which link failed first.
  4. Record deployment details before changing configuration. Note the SRS version, how it is deployed, the encoder, the exact error, and whether the interruption affects viewers across different networks.

The cited SRS wiki is v3-era documentation. Use it for the general process-and-log workflow, not as current, version-specific configuration advice.

Verify YouTube’s RTMP or RTMPS ingest settings

Use the ingest URL currently shown in YouTube Live Control Room rather than relying on an endpoint copied from an old setup. Check that the encoder or relay uses the same protocol and server YouTube provides, and that the correct stream key is configured. YouTube’s RTMPS instructions describe obtaining the RTMPS URL and stream key and checking encoder compatibility.

  • For an RTMPS setup, confirm that the URL uses RTMPS and points to the server shown in Live Control Room.
  • For an SSL certificate error, YouTube advises checking that both the scheme and server are rtmps; it also says to try specifying port 443 if needed.
  • For a connection timeout, verify the URL and confirm that the encoder supports RTMPS.
  • Protect the stream key. Treat it as a secret; do not include it in public logs, screenshots, or support posts. If you think it has been exposed, replace it through YouTube’s controls.

Do not change protocol or port at random. Make a deliberate change only when it matches the endpoint and error being investigated, then check whether the result changes.

Test the outbound connection to YouTube

If the encoder’s local picture and sound are healthy but the stream still drops, test the strength of the outbound internet connection. YouTube says that when a stream looks and sounds healthy, there may be an issue with the outbound internet connection; if its connection test reveals a problem, YouTube recommends contacting the internet provider.

As an additional diagnostic—not a guaranteed YouTube fix—compare the same setup on Ethernet and Wi-Fi. If the stream behaves differently, that suggests the network path deserves attention; if it does not, continue checking the encoder, SRS, ingest settings, and provider connection. Record when and how the test was run so you can compare it with log timestamps.

Read disconnect errors as clues, not verdicts

An SRS error can point toward a specific part of the media path, but a single case does not establish a general cause. In a 2023 SRS issue, a DJI M30 setup on SRS 4.0.268 repeatedly disconnected and reconnected, with a logged invalid avc sample length=0 error during HLS video handling. The issue author reported apparently good Wi-Fi but could not rule out internet quality or device bandwidth. That report is a reason to compare your own logs and conditions—not evidence that this error explains other SRS disconnects.

Keep a short incident record with the timestamp, who was affected, encoder status, relevant SRS log lines, YouTube status or error, and any network-path comparison. That record is more useful for narrowing the failure than changing several settings at once.

Troubleshooting checklist

What you observe Next check What it helps isolate
One viewer reports a problem Ask whether other viewers are affected and check the viewer’s device or connection. A viewer-side issue versus a stream-wide issue.
Many viewers on one shared network report trouble Compare reports from viewers on different connections. The shared viewer network versus the published stream.
Viewers on different networks report the same drop Check the encoder’s local output, SRS process and logs, and YouTube status at the event time. A failure in the publishing chain.
Encoder preview or local recording is poor Inspect the source, encoder errors, and CPU load; update the encoder. A fault before the stream reaches SRS or YouTube.
Encoder output is healthy but SRS records an interruption Correlate SRS log entries with encoder and YouTube timestamps. The SRS process or its publishing connections.
RTMPS SSL error or timeout Recheck the Live Control Room URL, protocol, server, port guidance, and RTMPS support. An ingest endpoint or protocol mismatch.
Output looks healthy but the stream still drops Test outbound connection strength; compare Ethernet with Wi-Fi as a diagnostic. The outbound network path.
