Restreamer Video Formats and Codecs for YouTube Live: What to Use

For YouTube Live through Restreamer, start with H.264 video and AAC audio over RTMP/RTMPS, then verify the source codecs and match settings to the ingest protocol.

For a conventional YouTube Live stream from Restreamer, use RTMP or RTMPS with H.264 video and AAC audio as the straightforward starting point. The file extension alone does not tell you whether a source will work: an MP4 is a container, and the video and audio inside it determine compatibility. Check the source, choose passthrough only when its streams already fit the destination, and configure encoding when they do not.

Understand the three format decisions

  1. Source into Restreamer: identify how the source arrives and what codecs it contains. Restreamer’s source wizard lists HTTP, HTTPS (HLS and DASH), RTP, RTSP, RTMP, and SRT network protocols. These protocol options do not certify every file container or codec as supported by every Restreamer build. Restreamer’s video source guide describes source options and connection checks.
  2. Processing in Restreamer: choose passthrough (copy) when the incoming video is already suitable, or select an encoding option such as H.264/libx264 when the output needs to be changed. Passthrough does not convert a codec. Available encoders and exact behavior can depend on the installed build; check its settings and source probe/check output. See Restreamer’s encoding guide.
  3. Publication to YouTube: Restreamer’s YouTube guide describes using Publication Service with a valid YouTube streaming ID. Its publication service sends output to a remote destination using a configured protocol such as HLS, RTMP, or SRT and a streaming key. Match the output to the ingest protocol selected in YouTube Studio. See Restreamer’s YouTube guide and publication service documentation.

Restreamer’s cited documentation is older, so confirm exact options in your installed version rather than assuming every release has the same encoders or file support.

Choose settings for YouTube RTMP or RTMPS

YouTube’s general encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 video over RTMP/RTMPS, with AAC or MP3 audio. For a broadly practical SDR setup, H.264 with AAC is the uncomplicated baseline. YouTube recommends RTMPS as the secure extension to RTMP. Codec availability still depends on the encoder and ingest path; do not select a codec merely because YouTube lists it if Restreamer’s active output cannot produce it.

General encoder settings

  • Rate control: CBR.
  • Frame rate: up to 60 fps.
  • Keyframes: every 2 seconds is recommended; do not exceed 4 seconds.
  • SDR picture: progressive scan, square pixels, Rec. 709, and 8-bit color are among YouTube’s recommended advanced settings.
  • Advanced video: YouTube lists two B-frames, one reference frame, and CABAC in its recommended settings.
  • Stereo audio: AAC is a safe baseline; YouTube’s recommended advanced settings specify 44.1 kHz and 128 Kbps stereo. For 5.1 surround over RTMP/RTMPS, YouTube supports AAC only and lists 48 kHz and 384 Kbps.

For H.264, YouTube’s English encoder page displays these recommended bitrates: 720p at 30 fps, 8 Mbps; 720p at 60 fps, 8 Mbps; 1080p at 30 fps, 14 Mbps; and 1080p at 60 fps, 17 Mbps. These are the values shown on that page when reviewed, not guarantees for every network or source. Check YouTube’s live encoder settings for the selected resolution, frame rate, and ingest codec before configuring a stream, since recommendations can change. The page lists different bitrate recommendations for HEVC and AV1.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

YouTube transcodes live streams into multiple output formats for viewers, so the encoder values you choose govern ingest and do not promise that each viewer will receive the original encoded stream. Test with representative motion and sound, and monitor YouTube’s stream health.

Use the separate rules for HLS

HLS ingest is not interchangeable with RTMP/RTMPS. YouTube’s HLS setup guidance supports H.264 or HEVC video and AAC, AC3, or EAC3 audio. It requires MPEG-TS segments lasting 1–4 seconds, a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments, HTTPS POST/PUT, no byte ranges, and no encryption other than HTTPS. HLS generally has higher latency because it sends segments rather than one continuous stream. Follow YouTube’s HLS ingest instructions when using that route.

The MPEG-TS requirement applies to YouTube’s HLS instructions; it is not a universal YouTube Live file-format rule. For RTMP/RTMPS, follow the general encoder settings instead.

Keep HDR settings distinct from SDR

YouTube’s HDR guidance calls for HEVC video, 10-bit depth, BT.2020 color primaries and matrix coefficients, and either ST 2084 PQ or HLG transfer characteristics, matching the source. Do not apply SDR Rec. 709 and 8-bit settings to an HDR workflow. YouTube says AV1 is not supported for HDR and recommends H.265/HEVC. For HDR over HLS, its guidance also specifies TS segments of 1–4 seconds, a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments, and HTTPS POST/PUT. Consult YouTube’s HDR live streaming guidance.

Set up and preflight a Restreamer stream

  1. Inspect the source. Record its source protocol, container, video codec, and audio codec. Do not infer these from a name such as recording.mp4. Use Restreamer’s source connection check or probe output; exact file/container compatibility is not established by its protocol list alone.
  2. Choose passthrough or encoding. Copy the source only if its video and audio streams already suit the intended YouTube output. Otherwise configure an available encoder, such as H.264/libx264, and verify the installed build offers it.
  3. Choose the YouTube ingest route. In YouTube Studio, decide between RTMP/RTMPS and HLS, then apply the matching protocol’s settings. Do not carry HLS segment settings over to RTMP by assumption.
  4. Configure publication. In Restreamer, select Publication Service, enter a valid YouTube streaming ID/streaming key, save, and connect as described in the YouTube publishing guide.
  5. Confirm audio. Restreamer’s wizard notes that services such as YouTube require an audio channel. If the source is silent, provide a silent audio channel rather than publishing no audio stream.
  6. Run a representative test. Use sound and motion like the intended program. Check YouTube’s stream health and Restreamer’s main-window output bitrate before relying on the stream.

After an event, end the stream on YouTube first. Restreamer’s YouTube guide warns that interrupting in Restreamer may prevent YouTube from saving the DVR archive.

Fix common format and connection problems

  • The source connects, but YouTube rejects or fails to decode it: a source protocol working does not prove its codecs match the destination. Inspect the actual video and audio streams; encode to a supported output instead of relying on passthrough.
  • The filename ends in .mp4, but Restreamer cannot use it: the extension names a container, not its internal codecs or whether that particular Restreamer build supports the file path. Check the source details and installed version’s available inputs.
  • The stream is unstable or YouTube reports health warnings: check bitrate and network capacity, use CBR, verify the keyframe interval is 2 seconds (no more than 4), and test with representative motion. Compare the selected resolution and frame rate against YouTube’s current encoder table.
  • The picture works but there is no sound: confirm an audio stream is present and compatible; YouTube requires an active audio channel for this workflow. Add silent audio if the program is intentionally silent.
  • An HLS stream fails despite a valid codec: check segment duration, TS format, playlist window, byte-range behavior, HTTPS method, and encryption against YouTube’s HLS requirements. RTMP settings will not correct HLS packaging errors.
  • HDR looks wrong or is rejected: confirm HEVC, 10-bit, BT.2020, and matching PQ or HLG transfer characteristics. SDR Rec. 709/8-bit settings are not an HDR configuration.
  • The stream stops when Restreamer is interrupted: reconnect and follow the YouTube event-ending workflow; for an event whose DVR archive matters, end it on YouTube before interrupting Restreamer.
