You can install Restreamer with Docker and configure it to publish to YouTube, but the official documentation cited here does not establish how to make a local video file repeat indefinitely. The steps below cover the documented installation and YouTube setup—and mark the point where you need a verified looping source configuration rather than a guessed setting.
What you need before installing
- A Docker-capable host. Restreamer’s Linux installation guide specifies a 64-bit Intel or AMD CPU and a current Linux distribution: datarhei’s Linux installation guide.
- Storage on the host for Restreamer’s configuration and internal data.
- A YouTube account with a stream set up in YouTube Studio, so you can provide its streaming ID to Restreamer.
- A secure, unique password for Restreamer.
For a production installation, datarhei recommends its official Docker images and identifies them as its most tested installation method: Official Recommendations. The Quick Start example uses the moving latest tag; it is convenient, but it does not pin a reproducible image version.
Install Restreamer with Docker
1. Start the container
The official Quick Start provides this command: Restreamer Quick Start.
docker run -d --restart=always --rm --name restreamer
-v /opt/restreamer/config:/core/config
-v /opt/restreamer/data:/core/data
-p 8080:8080 -p 8181:8181
-p 1935:1935 -p 1936:1936
-p 6000:6000/udp
datarhei/restreamer:latest
The two bind mounts put Restreamer’s /core/config and /core/data directories in host directories under /opt/restreamer. Keep those host directories if you need the configuration and data to persist outside the container.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
The example maps ports for HTTP/HTTPS, RTMP/RTMPS, and UDP SRT-related traffic. The Quick Start says public port forwarding is needed for full functionality; do not expose ports you do not need, and configure your network and firewall deliberately. The required inbound access depends on which services you use.
Docker installations can differ in how they handle options. The example combines --restart=always and --rm; if your Docker installation reports those options as conflicting, follow the current Quick Start’s guidance for your Docker version rather than silently changing the command and assuming equivalent behavior.

2. Open the web interface
After the container starts, open the host’s IP address followed by :8080/ui in a browser. The guide’s example format is http://device-ip:8080/ui. Use the actual IP address of your Docker host and set a secure, unique password when prompted.
Configure YouTube as the destination
- In Restreamer, create a Publication Service.
- Select YouTube as the destination.
- Enter a valid YouTube streaming ID, then save the publication.
- Start the stream in Restreamer. When it connects, Restreamer’s main window shows the bitrate.
These are the documented YouTube publication steps: How can I use YouTube with the Restreamer?. The destination also needs an active YouTube account.

If the source has no sound, Restreamer’s wizard recommends a silent audio channel and notes that some services, including YouTube, require an active audio channel. Treat this as Restreamer’s guidance, not a complete statement of every current YouTube account or stream requirement. See the Restreamer wizard documentation.
The important limitation: a running stream is not proof of a looping file
Restreamer’s documented YouTube publication procedure explains how to send a source to YouTube. The official pages cited here do not establish a built-in setting or documented configuration for continuously repeating a local video file. Its wizard describes network, hardware, Raspberry Pi camera, USB, SRT, and internal RTMP choices; those descriptions do not verify a local-file loop workflow. The network-source documentation does not provide a confirmed local-file repeat procedure either: Network source.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
That distinction matters: keeping a publication connected does not necessarily restart its media when the file reaches its end. Do not assume a GUI toggle, environment variable, FFmpeg option, or Compose setting will make a file loop. Before relying on Restreamer for a 24/7 prerecorded YouTube stream, verify that the current release documents a local-file source and its repeat behavior. The installation and YouTube steps above are usable, but they are not, by themselves, a complete verified recipe for a local video loop.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.End a YouTube event in the right order
When ending an event, end the stream on YouTube first, then stop the Restreamer publication. Datarhei warns: “Always end the stream on YouTube first after an event. If you interrupt the stream in the Restreamer during a live stream, YouTube may not save your live stream in the DVR archive.” This is a warning in Restreamer’s documentation, not a guarantee about how YouTube will handle every event.
