You normally do not add a YouTube stream key to Owncast. Owncast uses its own key to receive a broadcast from encoder software; YouTube uses a separate key when that software sends a broadcast to YouTube. The documented setup is to enter the key for the destination you are configuring, and to treat YouTube’s key like a password.
Understand which stream key belongs where
Owncast is an RTMP ingest destination in the documented setup: your encoder sends video to your Owncast server using an Owncast stream key. YouTube is configured as a destination in the encoder, using the stream URL and key provided by YouTube. These are separate credentials for separate services.
- To stream to Owncast: enter the Owncast server address and an Owncast key in your encoder.
- To stream to YouTube: enter YouTube’s stream URL and key in the encoder’s YouTube destination settings.
Owncast documents its Stream Keys settings for keys that broadcaster software uses to send video into Owncast. The official instructions cited here do not document entering a YouTube key into Owncast as an outbound relay credential. Do not assume that adding a YouTube key in Owncast’s Stream Keys tab will forward your stream to YouTube. Send an encoder stream to Owncast
- Make sure the Owncast server is running and reachable. Use the RTMP address and port configured for your instance.
- Get an Owncast key. In the Owncast admin, open Configuration > Server Setup > Stream Keys. Create or select a key for the broadcaster software. Owncast supports multiple keys, which can be assigned and revoked separately.
- Configure OBS. Open Settings > Stream, choose Custom as the service, and enter the Owncast RTMP address in the server field. A typical address is
rtmp://<your-server>:1935/live; use your server’s actual host and configured port. Enter the Owncast key in the stream-key field. - Start streaming and check Owncast. Confirm that the incoming stream appears in your Owncast instance.
The Owncast key is not the admin password, and it is not your YouTube key. If the Owncast credential is exposed, revoke or rotate that key in Owncast’s Stream Keys settings.

Send an encoder stream to YouTube
- Get the destination details in YouTube Studio. Open the Live Control Room for the scheduled or current stream and obtain its stream URL and YouTube stream key.
- Enter them in your encoder’s YouTube destination settings. Use the encoder’s YouTube preset if available, or enter the URL and key in the appropriate fields. YouTube’s encoder instructions explain this configuration at Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
- Prefer RTMPS when your encoder supports it. Use the RTMPS address shown in Live Control Room. YouTube describes RTMPS as RTMP carried over TLS/SSL, which encrypts the connection in transit. See Encrypt your stream using RTMPS.
- Keep the key private. YouTube describes stream keys as password-like. Do not include a live key in public screenshots, tutorials, chats, or issue reports.
This configures an encoder for YouTube; it does not make Owncast a YouTube relay. The official documentation cited here does not establish a supported Owncast-to-YouTube forwarding workflow or a particular dual-destination setup.
Protect a YouTube stream key
Before and during a stream
- Enter the key in the encoder’s credential field rather than placing it in a public URL, source-controlled configuration, or a command that may be saved in shell history.
- Keep it out of logs, screenshots, public tutorials, chats, and support posts. Limit access to the encoder or account that needs it.
- Use RTMPS if supported. Encryption protects the stream connection in transit; it does not hide a key exposed in an encoder interface, log, screenshot, or compromised host.
If a key may have been exposed
- In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and go to the Stream tab.
- Reset the compromised key. YouTube says a channel owner or manager must perform the reset.
- Replace the old value in the encoder with the new key, then confirm the encoder is connected before going live.
Use YouTube’s current Manage live stream settings instructions for key management. If the exposed credential was an Owncast key instead, revoke or rotate that key separately in Owncast; resetting a YouTube key does not change it.

If you need to publish to Owncast and YouTube at once
The documented configurations above cover each destination separately. They do not verify that one encoder can publish to both at the same time, or that Owncast can safely store and relay a YouTube key. Before supplying credentials to an encoder, relay, or other service, check its current documentation for explicit multi-destination support and how it stores and restricts access to each key.
- Confirm whether the encoder sends to one destination or multiple destinations.
- Check where each platform’s key is stored and who can view it.
- Verify whether the connection to each destination supports TLS/RTMPS.
- Consider the effect of extra bandwidth, server load, or a connection failure on each destination.
- Check whether revoking one destination’s key would affect the other stream.
Do not enter a YouTube key into Owncast’s incoming Stream Keys setting as a workaround: that setting is for broadcaster software sending video into Owncast.
