When that computer shuts down, its feed stops reaching YouTube. To keep a broadcast going, both the video source and the encoder must keep running independently of the computer. “Astra Streaming” is ambiguous, and the available information does not establish that an Astra product can take over a computer’s existing stream.
What happens to YouTube Live when a computer shuts down?
YouTube receives a livestream from an encoder—a software or hardware device that sends video to YouTube using its server URL and stream key. If the encoder is running on the computer that shuts down, it stops sending the feed. YouTube’s encoder guidance says, “To end the stream, stop sending content from your encoder.” YouTube Help: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
The source matters too. A different encoder cannot preserve gameplay, a desktop capture, or another feed that exists only on the powered-off computer. For an uninterrupted broadcast, the source and encoder must both remain available, along with power and a network connection.
What does “Astra Streaming” refer to?
The name does not identify one confirmed YouTube video-streaming solution. The located Astra Streaming Studio listing describes an Android app for mobile streaming and mentions RTMP/RTSP support. It does not document taking over a PC encoder’s existing feed or continuing a desktop stream after shutdown. The listing was updated October 31, 2023, so check its current guidance before relying on it.

Choose an approach based on your video source

Hardware for an independent source
YouTube lists the AJA HELO Plus as a hardware encoder for direct YouTube Live streaming. Its page also describes PlayToStream, which can schedule prerecorded media to YouTube Live without a computer. These capabilities suit an independent input or prerecorded-media workflow; they do not transfer a live desktop feed that disappears when its PC shuts down. Consult YouTube’s encoder guidance for setup details.

Hosted playback for prerecorded video
YouTube’s encoder guide also lists cloud-streaming products for continuous prerecorded streams. A hosted service may avoid keeping a home computer on, but confirm that it supports your source type, stream controls, account, runtime, and budget. The available information does not verify an Astra cloud video-streaming feature.

Troubleshooting a stream that stops
- The broadcast ends as the computer powers down: the computer-hosted encoder or source stopped. Keep that system running, or move the source and encoder to independent hardware or a suitable hosted service.
- A second encoder does not continue the same feed: it cannot access a source that exists only on the shut-down PC. Provide it with an independent camera or other source, or use prerecorded media.
- A mobile app is assumed to be a PC handoff: RTMP support alone does not demonstrate that capability. Check the app’s current setup documentation and test with the exact source and YouTube configuration.
- A cloud option appears suitable but key details are unclear: verify input format, scheduling, account requirements, runtime limits, recovery behavior, and service terms before depending on it for a continuous broadcast.
