Elysium is a 2013 science-fiction action film set in 2154. Its central conflict pits the wealthy residents of a pristine space station against the people left on an overpopulated, damaged Earth, with Matt Damon’s Max caught up in a mission that could change the balance between them.
What is Elysium about?
In the film’s 2154 setting, humanity is sharply divided. The wealthy live aboard Elysium, a human-made space station, while most people remain on a ruined and overpopulated Earth. Max, played by Matt Damon, undertakes a dangerous mission that could bring equality between the two worlds. Jodie Foster plays Secretary Delacourt, who works to preserve Elysium’s privileged order. Sony’s film page gives the official synopsis and cast information.
The premise puts inequality at the center of an action story. It also invites viewers to consider who gets access to medical care, how borders are enforced, and how technology can reinforce privilege. These are interpretive ways to read the film’s setup, not a definitive allegorical explanation attributed to its makers.
Who made the film?
Neill Blomkamp wrote and directed Elysium. Sony’s 2013 production announcement names TriStar Pictures and Media Rights Capital in connection with the film, and credits Bill Block, Blomkamp, and Simon Kinberg as producers for the QED International, Alphacore Studios, and Kinberg Genre production. Sony’s announcement also says the film was mixed in Auro 11.1 and Dolby Atmos, describing it as the first Sony Pictures Entertainment title mixed in those formats. That production detail does not mean every cinema or home-video edition offers either mix.

What did Elysium earn at the box office?
In an October 28, 2013 announcement about Blomkamp’s next film, Sony described Elysium’s worldwide gross as an estimated $283 million “to date.” This is a dated studio estimate, not a current independently audited total. Sony’s announcement supplies that figure.
