Eric Carmen, the Cleveland-born singer-songwriter who fronted the power-pop band the Raspberries before recording solo hits including “All By Myself” and “Hungry Eyes,” died at 74. His wife, Amy Carmen, announced his death in March 2024. The Associated Press reported that she said he died in his sleep over the weekend; she did not disclose a cause of death.
Who was Eric Carmen?
Born in Cleveland on August 11, 1949, Carmen built a career across two related but distinct roles: first as the lead singer and principal songwriter of the Raspberries, then as a solo artist whose songs ranged from rock to sweeping pop ballads. The Raspberries formed in 1970. Carmen had previously played in the local group Cyrus Erie; the Associated Press reported that he and guitarist Wally Bryson joined former members of the Choir to form the band.
The Raspberries released four albums for Capitol Records and had four Top 40 singles, according to the Associated Press. Their best-known songs included “Go All the Way,” a Top 5 hit, as well as “I Wanna Be With You” and “Let’s Pretend.”
How the Raspberries and solo careers differed
| Period | Role and sound | Signature work and chronology |
|---|---|---|
| The Raspberries | Carmen fronted a Cleveland power-pop band and served as its principal songwriter. | The band formed in 1970; its first run ended in 1975. “Go All the Way,” “I Wanna Be With You” and “Let’s Pretend” were among its best-known songs. |
| Solo career | Carmen recorded as a solo singer-songwriter, including ballads and soundtrack-associated pop. | His self-titled debut appeared in 1975 and included “All By Myself.” Later hits included “Hungry Eyes” and “Make Me Lose Control.” |
In a 2017 remark to the Observer quoted by the Associated Press, Carmen explained the Raspberries’ distinctive suits in contrast to the prevailing look of other bands: “Almost every band had hair down to their waist and beards and ripped jeans and they looked like a bunch of hippies, and I wanted to get as far away from that as I could.”
