How to Stream Different Pre-Recorded Videos by Time of Day with PRISM Live Studio

PRISM Live Studio can play prerecorded videos and organize them into playlists or scenes, but its documented features do not automatically switch files at set times. Here are the practical options and limitations.

PRISM Live Studio’s documented features do not include a built-in clock-based scheduler that automatically switches among prerecorded videos. PRISM mobile lets you make reusable video playlists, and PRISM desktop can play local media and switch scenes, but the documented controls are for operator-managed playback—not assigning a file to a time of day. For unattended timed changes, you would need to test an external scheduling setup; compatibility with PRISM is not established.

What PRISM can—and cannot—schedule

PRISM mobile supports reusable playlists made from videos on your device. You can order entries and seek within them, but the guide does not describe assigning videos to clock times or automatically starting playback. PRISM’s mobile playlist guide explains playlist creation and editing.

On Windows and Mac, PRISM desktop supports local media sources, including video, image, and audio. Scenes can group sources into different layouts, and you can switch scenes during a stream. The reviewed guides do not document a clock-triggered scene change. The desktop Media Source guide and scene guide describe those functions.

PRISM mobile also lets you schedule a YouTube live event. That schedules the event, not a specific prerecorded file to play automatically at a chosen hour. See PRISM’s platform scheduling guide.

Choose the workflow that matches your timing needs

Approach What it does Best suited to Important limitation
PRISM mobile video playlist Create, reorder, seek through, save, and reuse a playlist of device videos. A stream where an operator can manage playback. No documented clock-time assignment or unattended schedule.
PRISM desktop media sources and scenes Play local media and organize source layouts into scenes that an operator can change. A desktop stream with manually managed transitions. Playback setup may need attention; timed scene changes are not documented.
External OBS scheduling tool Scene Scheduler’s manual describes scheduled scene and source changes for OBS. A technical user willing to test a custom setup. Compatibility with PRISM is unverified; do not assume it will work reliably without testing.
PRISM YouTube event scheduling Create or edit a scheduled YouTube live event from PRISM mobile. Planning when a live event is listed. Does not schedule prerecorded-file playback.

When evaluating any hands-off arrangement, check whether it can recover after a missed trigger or restart, whether it supports your PRISM version and operating system, how much oversight it needs, and whether transitions must occur at exact times. These are practical evaluation criteria, not measured performance claims.

Build a playlist for operator-managed playback on mobile

  1. Open My Studio in PRISM mobile and create a Video playlist from videos stored on the device.
  2. Arrange the entries in the desired order. PRISM’s playlist controls also allow seeking to selected positions.
  3. Save the playlist for reuse. Start and manage playback when the relevant part of your stream is due; the playlist itself is not a clock schedule.

Use this route when an operator can be present to start, seek, or otherwise manage the playback. The documented guide does not establish automatic start times or per-video time assignments.

Set up desktop media and switch scenes manually

  1. In PRISM desktop for Windows or Mac, add each local file you need as a Media Source and test it in the scene where it will be used.
  2. If a source does not begin playing in Studio Mode, check the media-source playback behavior. PRISM documents unchecking Restart playback when source becomes active, or using Apply in Studio Mode, as ways to address playback.
  3. Create separate scenes or source arrangements for the different video blocks. Switch to the intended scene manually when it is time for that block.
  4. Run a test stream or rehearsal with the actual files and scene order. Confirm that the expected media plays and that the transitions you need can be made by the operator.

PRISM documents media playback and scene changes, not time-triggered transitions. A scene change should be treated as manual unless you configure and validate an external scheduler.

Can an OBS scheduler automate PRISM?

Scene Scheduler’s manual describes time-based scene or source changes for OBS. PRISM says it supports OBS plugins on Windows from version 4.0.0 onward; its plugin installation guide says to use PRISM 4.0.5 or higher for the documented installation flow. Those facts do not establish that Scene Scheduler works with PRISM.

  1. Check the current PRISM version, operating system, and the scheduler’s own requirements before installing anything.
  2. Test the exact plugin and PRISM combination with the intended local files and scenes. OBS’s media-source documentation explains OBS media playback but does not verify PRISM interoperability.
  3. Test the schedule at the intended times, including what happens after a missed trigger, application restart, or stream interruption.
  4. Keep an operator fallback until you have confirmed the whole setup behaves as required. Do not promise unattended timing based only on OBS plugin support.

Schedule the YouTube event separately from video playback

Use PRISM mobile’s YouTube scheduling controls when you need to create or edit a scheduled live event. Treat that as event planning: it does not by itself select a file and start it at a chosen time. Plan the playback method separately, whether an operator manages a playlist or desktop scenes, or you test an external scheduler.

Troubleshoot common playback and scheduling problems

  • A video does not start after adding its source: In Studio Mode, check whether Restart playback when source becomes active is enabled; PRISM documents unchecking it or using Apply as possible remedies. Test the source again in its intended scene.
  • The next video does not begin at a particular hour: A PRISM playlist is documented as an ordered, reusable collection, not a clock scheduler. Manage it manually or investigate a separate scheduling tool and validate the complete setup.
  • A scene does not change automatically: PRISM’s scene guide covers scene management, not clock-triggered changes. A scene switch remains an operator action unless an external scheduler is configured and tested.
  • A scheduled YouTube event exists, but the intended video is not playing: Event scheduling and prerecorded playback are separate tasks. Arrange playback through a playlist, media source, or a tested external setup.
  • An OBS plugin installs but automation is unreliable in PRISM: Plugin support does not prove compatibility with every plugin. Recheck the PRISM version and operating system, then test source behavior, timing, restarts, and stream continuity before relying on it.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is a continuous YouTube stream of uploaded prerecorded videos rather than camera-based broadcasting, StreamNeo is an alternative: upload the video or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. The cloud keeps it running without a computer or home connection left on. It streams your upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; it also attempts automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo streams to YouTube only. Learn about StreamNeo, or start your free day.
