Decode the prerecorded video and the music into separate audio paths, route both to a GStreamer audiomixer, lower the music on its own mixer input, then encode and mux the mixed audio with the video before sending it to YouTube. Keep the video’s original audio on a separate input if you want to retain dialogue or narration. The exact pipeline depends on your media formats, installed plugins, encoder and whether the music must loop.
How the audio and video paths fit together
Think of the pipeline as a picture branch and an audio mix. Decode the video file; send its raw picture to the video encoder and, if it has audio you want to keep, send that audio to one audiomixer input. Decode the music file separately and connect it to another input. Reduce the music input’s gain, convert or resample as needed, encode the mixed audio, then mux it with the encoded video for the network sink.
audiomixer combines raw audio streams and synchronizes its inputs, including live inputs. Its sink pads have volume and mute controls; the documented volume range is 0.0 to 10.0. The mixer can convert input formats, but the sample rate must match what downstream requires or the first configured pad. Add a caps filter after the mixer when you need to specify the output format. See the GStreamer audiomixer documentation.

Decode the prerecorded video
Use a file source and decoder.
filesrcreads a file;decodebindiscovers streams and exposes decoded pads. In an application, connect the appropriate dynamic pads to the video and audio branches. The filesrc reference, decodebin reference and gst-launch examples describe these elements and basic pipeline construction.Recommended: Fix Windows Errors and Clear Junk Files in Minutes - Free Scan →Recommended: Crashes or Glitches? -
Decode the music separately
Use a second file source and an appropriate parser or decoder. For WAV files,
wavparseparses the file to raw or compressed audio; other supported formats may need demuxing and decoding elements. Keep this branch separate so its level can be adjusted without changing the video’s dialogue or narration. See wavparse and the GStreamer gst-launch examples. -
Connect the audio inputs to audiomixer
Convert and resample the source branches as required by your installed plugins and target output. Put queues on independently paced branches in a practical application pipeline. Connect the video’s decoded audio and the music’s decoded audio to separate mixer sink pads. If the video has no audio, omit that input and use the music as the sole mixer input.

Set the music level and output format
Set the
volumeproperty on the music branch’saudiomixerinput pad—not on the combined output—so the video’s original audio stays independent. Choose a level by listening to both quiet and loud sections of the programme; there is no universal gain value that suits every recording. After the mixer, use conversion and a caps filter if needed to establish the sample format, channel layout and rate expected by the audio encoder. Summed signals can clamp at the representable limit, so check for clipping. -
Encode, mux and send the stream
Encode the mixed audio and video, then mux them before the network sink. GStreamer’s
rtmpsinkaccepts FLV content and uses librtmp; its documentation shows a muxer connected to the sink and describes RTMP URL parameters. Use the rtmpsink reference to check the installed element’s requirements. Prefer RTMPS when the selected sink supports it. Obtain the ingest URL and stream key from YouTube Live Control Room; do not guess or publish either value.Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

A command-line launch can help prototype a pipeline, but this setup involves dynamic decoder pads, error handling and possibly music looping. GStreamer advises using application code for more involved control; gst_parse_launch() is one way for an application to build a pipeline description. Handle decoder pads and bus errors explicitly. See the gst-launch-1.0 reference and decodebin documentation.
Choose the music behavior deliberately
A finite music file does not automatically loop indefinitely just because it feeds a mixer. If the track must continue after it ends, arrange looping in the application or source design and test the transition for a gap or discontinuity. The exact method depends on the pipeline and installed elements.

Set YouTube Live encoding and connection settings
YouTube’s live encoder guidance, accessed October 3, 2026, lists RTMP/RTMPS ingestion, H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1 video codecs, frame rates up to 60 fps, and AAC or MP3 audio for RTMP/RTMPS. It recommends a 2-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed 4 seconds. For stereo audio, it lists 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps. Check the current YouTube live encoder settings and your Live Control Room settings before each broadcast; recommendations are not guaranteed acceptance thresholds.
Choose the video bitrate for the codec, resolution and frame rate rather than treating one table row as universal. For example, YouTube’s cited table lists H.264 at 1080p30 with a recommended 5 Mbps video bitrate; for H.264 at 1080p60 it lists 6 Mbps minimum and 17 Mbps recommended. These are different operating points, not interchangeable defaults. Make sure your connection can sustain the chosen output.

Test the mix and network before going live
- Preview a representative section containing both quiet and loud programme audio, and listen for music masking speech or audible distortion.
- Use audio meters if available and check that the combined signal does not clip.
- Test with movement and audio similar to the planned stream, then monitor stream health during the broadcast.
- Leave upload headroom: YouTube’s streaming tips recommend a 20% upload bandwidth margin.
- Preview before going live and check the stream in Live Control Room. See YouTube Streaming tips.
Troubleshoot common pipeline problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Music is missing | The music decoder did not expose the expected audio pad, or the branch is not linked to a mixer input. | Check decoder errors, dynamic-pad routing and that the selected mixer pad is connected and not muted. |
| The video plays but its dialogue is absent | The decoded video audio was not routed to a mixer input, or the video has no audio stream. | Inspect the decoder’s discovered streams; connect its audio pad separately if present. |
| Audio is distorted or harsh | The music and programme signals may be clipping when summed, or a source may already be distorted. | Lower the music pad’s gain, inspect levels if meters are available and audition loud passages. |
| The mixer or encoder reports caps negotiation errors | Input or output audio formats, including sample rate, may not match downstream requirements. | Add or adjust conversion and resampling before the mixer; use a caps filter after it for the required encoder format. |
| The music stops at the end of the file | A finite source ended; looping was not configured. | Implement looping in the application or source design and inspect the loop point for a gap or discontinuity. |
| YouTube does not accept or maintain the stream | The ingest URL, stream key, codec, keyframe interval, bitrate or network capacity may be wrong or unsuitable. | Verify current Live Control Room credentials and encoder settings, test before broadcasting, and inspect YouTube’s stream health messages. |
Or let it run in the cloud
For a YouTube channel that should stay live from prerecorded uploads, StreamNeo is a separate cloud option rather than a GStreamer audio-mixing pipeline: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home. It streams uploaded video as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot; there are no quality tiers. If YouTube drops the stream, StreamNeo automatically recovers. The first day is free with no card. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is YouTube-only and plays uploaded videos; it does not stream from a camera.
