Melanie Safka, the singer-songwriter known professionally as Melanie, performed at Woodstock in 1969 and later topped the U.S. charts with “Brand New Key.” She died on January 23, 2024, at age 76, her children announced. The Associated Press reported that the cause of death was not immediately disclosed.
Who was Melanie Safka?
Melanie built a career as a singer-songwriter, but popular memory often hinges on two strikingly different moments: her appearance at Woodstock and the playful 1971 hit “Brand New Key.” Treating either as the whole story misses the connection between them—and the way a single song’s public interpretation could overshadow its writer.
At Woodstock in 1969, Melanie was one of three solo female performers at the festival, alongside Joan Baez and Janis Joplin, according to the Associated Press. The experience inspired “Lay Down (Candles in the Rain),” linking the festival to her subsequent recording career. The Washington Post’s obituary also describes the song as a response to Woodstock.

Why “Brand New Key” became her signature hit
Released on her 1971 album Gather Me, “Brand New Key” became a No. 1 hit in the United States. Bethel Woods Center for the Arts says it first reached No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 on December 25, 1971. Its bouncy, old-fashioned tune and lyrics about a young woman with roller skates and a key invited listeners to hear a double meaning—but that interpretation should not be mistaken for a confirmed statement of Melanie’s intent.
The Associated Press reported that Melanie said she did not necessarily intend the sexual reading. The Washington Post obituary recounts her description of writing the song in 15 minutes and thinking it was “cute, a kind of old ’30s tune.” Her account complicates the familiar story of the song as a knowing innuendo: the public could find a suggestive layer in it even as its writer described a quick, lighthearted composition.

In a 2014 interview with the Tennessean, quoted by the AP, Melanie reflected: “I probably have a quirky way of writing, and I think I was misunderstood.” She added that her “smiling, cherubic thing” worked against her, while women guitarists seen as relevant were “angst-filled and angular.” The remark speaks to a career shaped not only by a hit’s staying power but also by the expectations listeners brought to a woman writing and performing her own songs.

Gather Me is the natural starting point for hearing “Brand New Key” in its album context: the Associated Press identifies it as the 1971 album that contains the song. Melanie’s death and legacy
Melanie died on January 23, 2024, at 76. Her children—Leilah, Jeordie and Beau Jarred—announced her death. In their statement, they wrote: “Our world is much dimmer, the colors of a dreary, rainy Tennessee pale with her absence today.”
Her legacy holds Woodstock’s communal ideal beside the wit and ambiguity of a pop hit. “Brand New Key” remains an easy shorthand for her in public memory, but the story also includes a songwriter who drew inspiration from a festival, made a song whose meaning listeners debated, and pushed back against being reduced to the image they projected onto her.
