Azure Media Services retired on June 30, 2024, according to Microsoft’s lifecycle listing. Migrating to Ant Media Server is therefore a rebuild of the streaming workflows you still need—not an automatic conversion of Azure Media Services accounts, assets, jobs, APIs, or endpoints. Start by documenting each workflow, map its requirements to Ant Media Server and any supporting services, then pilot and cut over in stages.
What migration to Ant Media Server does—and does not—mean
Ant Media Server is a streaming engine that can run in cloud or on-premises environments. Ant Media describes it as a migration candidate, including for Azure-hosted deployments. However, its public migration guidance is a high-level introduction, not a feature-by-feature conversion manual. The available guidance does not establish that Azure Media Services resources, APIs, encoding jobs, or endpoints can be imported or converted automatically.
Plan to recreate the workflows and integrations you need. The target may combine Ant Media Server with Azure storage, networking, or other services; not every Azure Media Services function necessarily belongs in Ant Media Server. Treat feature equivalence as something to verify for each requirement, rather than assume.
Inventory the Azure Media Services workflows you still need
Before choosing an Ant Media design, capture how each current workflow operates from input to playback. Separate required capabilities from legacy functions that can be retired. Include at least:

Map requirements and expose gaps before rebuilding
Make a workflow-by-workflow mapping table. Record what goes in, what processing occurs, what comes out, and which systems or clients depend on it. For every requirement, identify the planned Ant Media configuration or another component that will meet it. Mark unresolved coverage as a gap to validate; do not treat a similar-sounding feature as proof of parity.
| Requirement to map | Questions to answer for the target |
|---|---|
| Ingest and latency | Which sources and protocols must publish? What latency and quality are required? |
| Processing and outputs | Which encodes, renditions, packaging formats, or recordings are required, and where will each be produced? |
| Playback and delivery | Which protocols and clients must play the output? What delivery or CDN components remain necessary? |
| Security | How will publishing and playback be authenticated? Which access controls or protection requirements must be preserved? |
| Scale and recovery | What concurrency must the deployment handle, how will it scale, and what failures must it recover from? |
| Integration and operations | Which APIs, SDKs, automations, alerts, and runbooks need replacement or revision? |
| Cost and ownership | Who operates each component, and what are the combined licensing, infrastructure, storage, network, and support costs? |
No universal, authoritative equivalency map is established for all Azure Media Services scenarios, including encoding, content protection, packaging, APIs, and delivery. Keep those areas explicit in the design and validation plan. Current Ant Media licensing and Azure infrastructure costs also depend on the chosen configuration and workload, so there is no supportable general migration estimate here.

Choose and design the Ant Media deployment
Ant Media documents an Azure cluster pattern built around Origin and Edge scale sets, MongoDB, and Application Gateway. Its deployment-choice guidance points readers to the cluster guide as a starting point and describes ARM-template scaling for production automation and scale-out.
Use that pattern as an architectural reference, not a sizing guarantee. Select a design only after you have defined real publisher and viewer concurrency, availability and recovery requirements, and operational ownership. Confirm the requirements for the Ant Media edition and release you intend to run; deployment support and protocol compatibility can be version-specific.

Rebuild application and API integrations
Expect to review publish and playback flows, application endpoints, authentication and token handling, automation, and operational tools. Ant Media lists SDKs for JavaScript, Android, iOS, React Native, Flutter, and Unity, as well as a REST API. Those options do not establish compatibility with Azure Media Services APIs or prove that existing client code will work unchanged.
- List every dependency: find Azure Media Services API calls, SDK usage, stored endpoint references, credentials, tokens, and automated jobs in applications and infrastructure.
- Choose the replacement integration: identify the Ant Media SDK or REST API—or another service—for each required operation.
- Revise and test clients: update publishing, playback, authentication, error handling, and configuration for the chosen edition and release.
- Test operational paths: verify monitoring, alerts, deployment automation, and recovery procedures alongside the user-facing application.
Validate a representative workflow before cutover
Pilot the workflows that matter rather than treating a successful server deployment as proof of migration. If both live streaming and on-demand media are in scope, exercise at least one representative example of each.

- Confirm each source can ingest and the intended processing or recording behavior occurs.
- Test playback on the target clients and devices, including the formats and latency requirements recorded in the inventory.
- Check authentication, access restrictions, and any content protection requirements.
- Exercise failure recovery, monitoring, and operational runbooks.
- Measure startup time, quality, latency, and behavior under the expected peak load against requirements you set in advance.
These are validation criteria, not claims that a particular workload has already been tested. Record results and resolve gaps before shifting production traffic.
A documented SRT path is one example, not a complete migration map
Ant Media’s SRT documentation describes pushing SRT streams with OBS or FFmpeg, playing them through WebRTC, HLS, or CMAF, and recording them as MP4. It identifies SRT ingest as available in Enterprise Edition from version 2.4.3, and ARM architecture support from version 2.6.0. Those are edition- and version-qualified details from that documentation; recheck compatibility for the release you plan to deploy. This example does not prove that every Azure Media Services ingest or packaging workflow maps directly.

Cut over in controlled stages
- Prepare a production-like environment: configure the target components, integrations, monitoring, and access controls without routing all production use to them.
- Run a controlled pilot: compare observable behavior with the requirements and results from your current workflow.
- Move a limited workload: shift a selected stream, client group, or content workflow and watch the agreed operational and playback signals.
- Expand only after validation: move further workloads in stages, keeping a rollback plan for each step.
- Retire dependencies deliberately: retain relevant old configuration and data for the transition period your organization agrees, subject to actual availability and contractual constraints.
Do not promise zero downtime or automatic asset and API migration without workload-specific proof. Decide what constitutes a successful stage and what triggers rollback before moving production use.
Common migration problems and how to address them
| Symptom or risk | Likely cause | Practical response |
|---|---|---|
| An Azure Media Services API call or client stops working | The target integration is not API-compatible, or an endpoint or authentication flow still points to the old service. | Trace the call and its credentials, choose a replacement integration, revise the client, and test the complete publish or playback flow. |
| A required encoding, packaging, protection, or delivery behavior is missing | The requirement was assumed to have an equivalent rather than mapped and validated. | Revisit the workflow inventory, assign the requirement to Ant Media or another component, and test it before cutover. |
| Playback differs across devices or clients | The selected output protocol or format does not cover the target playback path. | Test the actual clients and devices against the required formats; adjust the design or use another component where needed. |
| The deployment fails to meet load or recovery needs | Architecture or scaling choices were made without workload-specific concurrency and resilience requirements. | Define expected publisher/viewer load and recovery targets, then validate the Azure cluster and scaling approach against them. |
| A documented feature is unavailable in the planned installation | Edition or release requirements differ; for example, the documented SRT ingest and ARM support have minimum Enterprise Edition versions. | Check the feature against the exact Ant Media edition, release, and architecture before implementation. |
| Costs are unclear or exceed expectations | Only server licensing was considered, or infrastructure, network, storage, delivery, and operations were omitted. | Estimate the full target stack against the workload and identify who owns each component; no general cost estimate can be inferred without those details. |
