Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteFirst find where the mismatch begins; do not add an audio delay as a guess. Compare the same sharp sound and visible action in the source, encoder or cloud preview, YouTube’s live preview, and viewer playback. Note whether audio leads or trails, whether the offset stays constant or grows, and which monitoring point first shows it. Then use the relevant health message or setting to correct that part of the chain.
Confirm it is a sync problem, not just stream delay
A stream can arrive late without its audio and video being out of sync. Overall latency is the delay between the live source and what a viewer sees. A/V sync trouble means the sound and corresponding picture do not line up with each other.
- Choose a repeatable cue with a sharp sound and visible action, such as a hand clap.
- Compare that cue at every point you can inspect: the original file or source preview, the cloud or encoder preview, YouTube’s live preview, and viewer playback. Compare the same moment, accounting for the delay between monitoring points.
- Record whether the audio leads or trails the picture, whether the gap is steady or grows over time, and the first point where the mismatch appears.
YouTube recommends testing with audio and movement similar to the planned stream and monitoring stream health during it: YouTube’s live-streaming troubleshooting guidance. If the source is already out of sync, changing the streaming bitrate or player latency will not repair the source. If the mismatch appears only at a later point, focus on that part of the path.
Check connection health before changing settings
For an OBS-based workflow, watch the dropped-frames counter and connection indicator while the stream runs. OBS says rising dropped frames and a yellow or red connection status indicate an unstable connection to the streaming service or that the connection cannot keep up with the configured bitrate. See OBS’s dropped-frames guidance.

- If the connection health points to insufficient or unstable upload capacity, reduce the output bitrate or improve the upload path, then test again.
- If connection health is stable and the mismatch is already present in the source or preview, do not lower bitrate as a generic sync fix.
- Change one relevant setting at a time and compare the same cue again, so you can tell whether the change helped.
YouTube notes that congestion and other factors can delay a live stream even when a connection can sustain the average bitrate. Lower-latency playback provides less read-ahead buffer, which can make encoder-to-player problems more noticeable. These are delivery and buffering concerns; they do not by themselves establish an A/V offset. YouTube’s latency guidance explains the distinction.
Match encoder settings to the YouTube health warning
Check the settings for the protocol and resolution you actually use against YouTube’s live encoder settings, then consult the exact warning in YouTube Live Control Room’s stream health. Avoid changing several audio and video settings at once.

For RTMP or RTMPS
- YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds.
- The guidance lists AAC or MP3 audio; recommended sample rates are 44.1 kHz for stereo and 48 kHz for 5.1 audio.
These are encoder configuration requirements and recommendations, not an audio-delay value. Use the settings supported by your chosen encoder and the protocol in use.
Use health diagnostics to narrow the cause
YouTube’s stream health diagnostics can flag unsupported audio codecs, incorrect sample rates, multiple audio streams, mismatches between primary and backup streams, and video ingestion starvation. Follow the wording of the specific warning in YouTube’s encoder and stream-health guidance.

If you configured a backup stream and YouTube reports a mismatch, compare its audio codec, bitrate, sample rate, channel count, video codec, frame rate, resolution, and bitrate with the primary stream. Correct the reported difference, then test again.
If the cloud playlist uses HLS, verify its segment setup
Apply this section only if your cloud workflow actually ingests through HLS. “Cloud playlist” can also mean a playlist inside an encoder or streaming service, and that alone does not establish that HLS is in use.

- Supports HDMI source devices without dedicated audio output
- Supports two channel left-right or SPDIF stereo output and uncompressed and compressed audio
- Supports up to 4k video resolution; 8-bit 4K (30 Hz), 12-bit 1080p (60 Hz), or 12-bit 720p/1080i (60 Hz), plus 3D formats
- Compatible with devices such as Blue-ray, DVD/HD/DVR players, cable/satellite, PS3/4, Xbox, PC/laptop, HD cameras and more
- YouTube’s HLS guidance requires MPEG-TS segments and a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments.
- Segments must be between one and four seconds; shorter segments reduce delivery latency.
- Check the supported codecs and audio configuration in YouTube’s HLS ingestion guide.
HLS has higher latency than RTMP because it sends video in segments. A stream that is delayed but whose sound and picture remain aligned has a latency issue, not necessarily a sync failure. YouTube also states that HLS disables the Ultra-low-latency option.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Choose YouTube latency for the interaction you need
YouTube describes Normal latency as suitable for non-interactive streams, Low latency for limited interaction, and Ultra-low latency for real-time engagement. Its guidance describes Low latency as less than ten seconds for most viewers and Ultra-low latency as less than five seconds for most viewers, with a higher chance of buffering. Those figures describe viewer latency, not an acceptable audio/video offset. See YouTube’s latency settings guidance.

Changing latency may affect buffering and delivery delay, but it is not a substitute for locating a track-sync fault. Choose a setting based on how quickly viewers need to interact and whether the resulting buffering trade-off is acceptable.
Common symptoms and what to do
| What you observe | What to check next |
|---|---|
| The source or local preview is already out of sync. | Correct or replace the source before adjusting the streaming path; the fault exists before ingestion. |
| The source is aligned, but the cloud or encoder preview is not. | Inspect the playlist or encoder’s audio and video configuration, then compare its output with YouTube’s supported settings. |
| OBS shows rising dropped frames and a yellow or red connection indicator. | Treat the connection as unstable or unable to sustain the configured bitrate; lower bitrate or improve the upload path, then retest. |
| YouTube reports an audio codec, sample-rate, multiple-stream, or backup-stream warning. | Correct the exact configuration named by stream health; check primary and backup settings where applicable. |
| The stream is late, but sound and picture remain aligned. | Review YouTube latency mode and, for HLS, segment settings. Do not label overall delay as A/V desynchronization. |
| The mismatch appears only in viewer playback. | Compare another playback point and YouTube’s live preview; distinguish a player or delivery issue from a fault already present at ingestion. |
