What’s actually slowing this PC down?

If OBS stops after the last study video, first check what kind of source you added: enable Loop for a single-file Media Source, or Loop Playlist for a VLC Video playlist. If the problem happens during a scene change, check the VLC source’s visibility behavior too. These controls address different causes, so confirm the source type before changing settings.
Check whether the source is a single video or a playlist
- In OBS, find the video in the Sources list and identify whether it is a Media Source or a VLC Video source.
- Right-click the source and open Properties. Check the loop control for that source type, rather than relying on what you remember selecting when you set it up.
For one file: enable Media Source Loop
In the Media Source properties, turn on Loop if the video should restart when it reaches the end. OBS documents this option as off by default, but inspect your installed source settings because defaults or saved settings may differ. OBS Media Sources documentation also lists Show nothing when playback ends. That hides the source after playback ends; it does not make the file repeat.
For multiple files: check VLC Video Loop Playlist
For a playlist in a VLC Video source, turn on Loop Playlist if you want the playlist to start again after it runs through its media. OBS documents this option as on by default, but check the actual property in your scene. The setting repeats the playlist; it does not create a pause or scene change after every individual video.
Check what happens when the source is hidden
If playback stops, restarts, or resumes unexpectedly when you switch scenes, open the VLC Video source’s properties and inspect Visibility Behaviour. OBS documents options to stop playback when the source is not visible and restart it when visible, pause it while hidden and resume when visible, or keep playing even while hidden. Choose the behavior that fits your scene setup, then test by switching away from and back to the scene.

If you want a scene change after each video
Pausing or switching after each playlist item is a different task from looping the playlist. An endlessly looping playlist is intended to continue, so it will not reach a playlist-ended state simply because one item has finished. A participant in an Advanced Scene Switcher forum discussion described detecting an individual item nearing its end by monitoring its remaining time.
In a 2023 OBS forum thread, a user described using Advanced Scene Switcher to change scenes when the current item had less than one second remaining, with the VLC source set to pause when inactive and resume when active. The user reported that the pause behavior sometimes failed, so treat this as a workaround to test, not a dependable guarantee. See the forum discussion about scheduling VLC media files.

If VLC Video is unavailable
VLC Video requires VLC to be installed. OBS states that 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. If the source option is missing or does not work, verify that VLC is installed and that its architecture matches OBS before investigating playlist settings.
Troubleshoot in this order
- It is one video and stops at the end: confirm the source is Media Source and enable Loop.
- It is a playlist and stops after the final item: confirm it is VLC Video and enable Loop Playlist.
- It stops or restarts on a scene change: test the VLC source’s Visibility Behaviour with the stop/restart, pause/resume, and always-play choices.
- You want to switch scenes after each item: do not rely on the playlist’s ended state while looping. Test an Advanced Scene Switcher rule based on the current item’s remaining time, and verify that pausing when the source is inactive works reliably in your setup.
- VLC Video is missing: install VLC and confirm its architecture matches OBS; 64-bit OBS needs 64-bit VLC, according to OBS.
If these checks do not explain the behavior, reproduce it while noting your OBS and VLC versions, operating system, source type and properties, and the scene transitions involved. The cause cannot be determined without those setup details.
