To run a 24/7 black-screen rain sounds stream with OBS, make a scene with a black video source and rain audio you have permission to use, then send OBS’s encoded feed to YouTube and check the preview and stream health in YouTube Studio. The stream stays live only while your computer, power, internet connection, and encoder keep working.
What you need before you start
- A rain recording you can legally stream. Use audio you created, properly licensed, or otherwise have clear permission to use on YouTube Live. Ambient sounds are not exempt from copyright enforcement.
- A computer running OBS and a reliable internet connection. A 24/7 broadcast depends on both remaining available, as well as on the encoder staying stable.
- A YouTube channel set up for live streaming. Open YouTube Studio and use its live workflow to create or schedule the broadcast and obtain the connection details.
Build the black-screen rain scene in OBS
- Create a scene. In OBS, add a scene for the continuous rain stream so its sources and audio are separate from other broadcasts.
- Add a black video source. Use a black color source or another black visual source that fills the canvas. Confirm that no other visible source sits above it in the scene.
- Add the rain audio. Add your authorized rain recording as an audio source. If it is a finite file, configure playback to loop in the source’s properties, where available. Listen to the output and check OBS’s audio mixer for activity.
- Check the scene output. Preview the scene in OBS. It should show black while the rain audio remains active. Keep the audio level controlled and avoid clipping.
There is no single resolution, frame rate, or bitrate established for this particular static-image audio stream by the sources cited here. Choose settings your computer and connection can sustain, and use current guidance shown in YouTube Studio and OBS rather than treating an arbitrary preset as universal.
Connect OBS to YouTube and verify the broadcast
- Open YouTube Studio’s live workflow. Create or schedule the live broadcast and follow the current on-screen instructions for connecting an encoder. You can connect an account or use the stream settings and key provided by YouTube; the exact labels may change.
- Configure OBS’s stream connection. In OBS, open Settings → Stream, select YouTube or the applicable YouTube ingest option, and connect your account or enter the server and stream key from YouTube Studio. Treat the key like a password: do not publish it or share it.
- Start the encoder feed. Select Start Streaming in OBS. Check YouTube Studio for the incoming feed and inspect its preview and status. An encoder feed reaching YouTube does not, by itself, confirm that the viewer-facing broadcast is live and healthy.
- Start or confirm the live broadcast in YouTube Studio. Follow the live workflow’s current prompts. Verify the public viewing page or live status before leaving the stream unattended.

Protect the stream from copyright interruptions
YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. If it detects a match, it may replace the broadcast with a placeholder and warn the creator; unresolved content can lead to interruption or termination. Even when you have a license, the rights holder may need to add your channel to a Content ID allowlist. Resolve that with the rights holder before going live, and retain documentation of your permission.

Do not assume that rain audio is free to use just because it sounds natural, is labeled royalty-free, or is already online. Check the actual license terms for live streaming, continuous use, and any required attribution. YouTube’s policy is explained at YouTube Help: Copyright issues with live streams.
Keep a home-PC stream running reliably
A continuous OBS broadcast relies on a chain: power, internet connectivity, the computer, OBS, and YouTube’s ingest and broadcast workflow. A failure in any link can interrupt it.

- Power: Keep the computer connected to reliable power. A UPS can provide limited backup during a brief outage, depending on its capacity; it cannot solve an internet outage or an encoder failure.
- Internet: Use a connection that can sustain your configured stream bitrate. OBS says dropped frames can rise when the connection to the streaming destination is unstable or cannot sustain the configured bitrate. See OBS: Dropped Frames and General Connection Issues.
- Encoder: Keep OBS running and monitor its connection and dropped-frame indicators. If the computer sleeps, reboots, overheats, or OBS stops, the encoder feed can stop too.
- YouTube status: Check YouTube Studio’s preview and health feedback as well as OBS. They report different parts of the delivery chain.
Troubleshoot common problems
YouTube does not show an incoming feed
- Check that OBS is streaming and that the selected service, server, and stream key match the current details in YouTube Studio.
- If you rotated or replaced the key, update OBS with the new one. Never expose the key in a screenshot or public post.
- Confirm that the computer is online and OBS is not blocked from reaching the network.
The stream drops frames or looks unstable
- Watch OBS’s dropped-frame counter and connection status. A rising counter can indicate an unstable connection or a bitrate the connection cannot maintain.
- Reduce the configured bitrate or choose a less demanding output setting, then check whether the connection stabilizes. Avoid copying settings intended for a different connection or stream format.
- Check YouTube Studio’s health feedback as a separate signal; a stable OBS connection does not guarantee every part of the broadcast is healthy.
The picture is black but the rain is silent
- Confirm the recording is selected, the source is not muted, and its playback is active.
- Check the OBS audio mixer for meter activity and verify the intended audio track is included in the stream output.
- Preview or monitor the audio before leaving the broadcast unattended.
The rain stops after one play
- Open the audio source’s properties and enable looping if the source supports it.
- Check that the file has not ended or become unavailable, then restart playback and confirm mixer activity.
YouTube interrupts the live stream
- Review YouTube Studio’s warning or status for a copyright match or other live-stream issue.
- If the audio is licensed, contact the rights holder about whether your channel must be allowlisted in Content ID; keep the broadcast from resuming with disputed audio until the issue is resolved.
Plan for replays and long-running broadcasts
A single 24-hour stream may not produce a complete archive. iTechGuides says broadcasts longer than 12 hours may not be captured as an archive, but that threshold is not independently confirmed by the official YouTube sources cited here.
