You do not need special hardware to start, but a stream that stays live needs a continuity plan: a computer, power and internet connection that remain available, or a cloud service that runs the prepared video.
What you need before you start
- A YouTube channel that is verified and has no live-streaming restrictions in the past 90 days. First-time live-stream activation may take up to 24 hours, so enable it in advance. YouTube live streaming tips
- A pink-noise audio source and a video feed. Use assets you created or have permission to transmit and replay; the visual can be simple if the stream is intended for listening.
- An encoder or hosted service to send the audio and video feed to YouTube.
- A continuity plan for the stream and a separate plan for any replay or archive you want to keep.
YouTube’s guidance says expensive equipment is not required to get started. Its live-streaming setup accepts a feed from an encoder; YouTube does not generate pink noise for you. The cited YouTube guides do not specify a noise-generation method, sample rate, bit depth, loudness target, or ideal playback level, so choose production settings based on your audio workflow rather than treating them as YouTube requirements.
How to make a 24/7 sleep sounds stream on YouTube
1. Prepare the audio and visual
Create or obtain pink-noise audio and a visual feed that you have the right to broadcast and replay. If your chosen software or hosting workflow requires a video file, combine the audio and visual in that workflow. The exact production process depends on the tools you choose; YouTube’s encoder instructions cover sending a feed, not generating or looping pink noise.
2. Enable live streaming and create a stream
- In YouTube Studio, enable live streaming for the channel and allow for the possibility that first-time activation takes up to 24 hours.
- Create or schedule a live stream in YouTube Studio. Use the Live Control Room settings that match the intended viewing experience.
- Copy the server URL and stream key shown for the stream. Treat the key as a credential: anyone with access to it may be able to send a feed to your channel. Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder
3. Connect an encoder
In your streaming software, enter YouTube’s server URL and stream key, then select the prepared audio/video feed as its source. YouTube describes the encoder as the software or hardware that converts the feed into a digital format and sends it to YouTube. The exact fields and controls vary by encoder, so follow its current setup instructions rather than assuming a particular interface or preset.

4. Preview, test and publish
- Start the encoder and wait for YouTube to receive the feed and create or open its watch page.
- Check the preview and confirm the audio and video are present and behaving as intended before making the stream public.
- Test access from the channel or watch page and on mobile devices. YouTube recommends testing the encoder and preview ahead of time.
- When ready, start the broadcast in the Live Control Room if the workflow requires it, then continue monitoring stream health and audio/video quality. YouTube’s guidance is to “Continuously monitor streams for audio and video quality.” YouTube live streaming tips
Choose a way to keep the stream running
The encoder sends your feed; the machine or hosting arrangement running it determines whether it can keep sending for 24 hours a day. YouTube identifies software encoding, standalone hardware encoding and cloud-based prerecorded-video streaming as possible approaches, but does not provide comparative benchmarks or prices for them.

Plan for interruptions, DVR and archives
Continuity is your responsibility
YouTube recommends preparing encoder streams ahead of time, testing the encoder and preview, and monitoring quality. Those recommendations do not guarantee uninterrupted 24/7 uptime. With a local setup, consider what happens if the computer restarts, power fails, the internet drops or the encoder stops; with hosted streaming, understand the provider’s recovery and operating arrangements before relying on it.

Decide whether viewers can pause and rewind
YouTube’s live-stream settings describe DVR as allowing viewers to pause, rewind and continue during a stream. Check the current DVR setting in Live Control Room and decide whether that behavior is appropriate for a sleep stream. Manage live stream settings
Do not assume a 24-hour broadcast becomes one replay
YouTube’s encoder guide says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. A 24/7 broadcast exceeds that stated window, so do not promise a single uninterrupted full-day replay. Clear rights for both the sound and the visual, including the right to transmit them live and use them in replays. Copyright permission and monetization eligibility are separate questions: YouTube’s monetization policies expect original and authentic content, and say highly repetitive, mass-produced or interchangeable content may be ineligible.
