Lilia Calderu reaches that answer during her final tarot reading, then uses the Tower card to give Agatha, Billy and Jen a chance to escape the Salem Seven. The episode’s out-of-order structure makes Lilia’s last choice the point where her scattered experiences—and her long fear of death—come together.
Who is Rio Vidal in Agatha All Along Episode 7?
Rio Vidal, played by Aubrey Plaza, is Death. In the trial’s library-like setting, Lilia takes charge of the tarot reading and draws the Death card in the destination position. She connects it to the skeletal figure she has glimpsed in the tunnels and says, “Rio… is Death.” Agatha confirms it when Lilia asks.
The episode has planted a clue earlier: the Ouija board in Episode 5 spelled out D-E-A-T-H, as the Los Angeles Times noted. Episode 7 makes the connection explicit. In Marvel Comics, Death is a cosmic embodiment of mortality, a character associated with Thanos and introduced in Captain Marvel No. 26 (1973), by Jim Starlin and Mike Friedrich. That context helps explain the character’s comic-book significance, but it does not mean the series has established that its version will follow every comics storyline.
What does Lilia’s tarot reading mean?
The cards give Lilia a way to read the coven’s relationships and her own path through the trial. The positions and identities below are the episode’s specific spread, not a claim that this is a standard historical tarot layout.

The card meanings are used deliberately, but the precise spread was made for the show. Showrunner Jac Schaeffer told TheWrap, “We wanted the Death reveal to look like the Death card.” She said the team created its own spread while trying to remain faithful to the cards’ meanings. The episode therefore uses tarot as a dramatic map of Lilia’s bonds, obstacles and destination rather than presenting a named, traditional spread or a universal guide to card interpretation.
Why is Agatha All Along Episode 7 out of order?
The episode follows Lilia’s nonlinear experience of time. Its tunnel and trial scenes arrive out of sequence, alongside moments from her past and glimpses of later events. At first, the transitions echo the gaps and lapses that have troubled Lilia since childhood. As the episode brings those moments together, they become part of a single emotional and narrative arc.

That structure also changes the meaning of the ending. Lilia is not simply solving a trap at the last second: she understands the coven she has found and acts on that understanding. TheWrap reports that Schaeffer conceived the episode around Lilia not experiencing time in the usual sequence.
Why does Lilia fall at the end?
As the Salem Seven close in, Lilia sends Agatha, Billy and Jen toward the exit and stays behind at the reading table. She turns the Tower card; the tower flips, and the attackers fall onto the swords below. Lilia hangs on briefly, then lets go and descends after them. The episode presents her fate as an apparent death, but this episode alone does not settle every question about her ultimate status.

The final cut to a younger Lilia arriving for a lesson links the fall to the earlier experiences that shaped her relationship with her gift. Schaeffer said Lilia had feared death since childhood and described her ending as a moment of setting that fear down. That is the showrunner’s account of the intended emotional meaning: the scene frames Lilia’s choice as acceptance, not merely a defeat by a menacing force.

Schaeffer told TheWrap that the swords were real and suspended on wires, with their positions plotted in advance. The production detail helps explain the physical setup of the sequence; it does not change what the episode establishes about Lilia’s fate.
