You can monitor an OBS stream without stopping it: keep OBS sending the stream to YouTube, then check its status in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room from another browser or device. To verify what viewers actually see and hear, open the public watch page on a separate device as well. Neither check requires ending playback or connecting to OBS’s local preview.
Check stream health in YouTube Live Control Room
- Start your encoder and leave it running. In OBS, start streaming to YouTube. In YouTube Studio, open the stream’s Live Control Room and wait for the incoming preview. YouTube’s encoder workflow has you click Go live after the preview appears. Once live, leave OBS and YouTube’s end-stream controls alone while you monitor.
- Open Live Control Room on another device or browser. Use the stream dashboard to read its status and any specific error messages, then review the real-time analytics. These checks take place in YouTube Studio; they do not require stopping OBS’s encoder.
- Check the public watch page separately if playback quality matters. Open the event’s watch page on another device, confirm it is accessible, and listen to and watch the playback. YouTube recommends checking access from channel and watch pages and on mobile devices, and continuously monitoring audio and video quality (YouTube streaming tips).
The dashboard and watch page answer different questions: Live Control Room reports what YouTube is receiving and related stream health, while the watch page lets you inspect playback on that particular device and network. A healthy dashboard does not guarantee every viewer’s device is playing correctly.
What the dashboard metrics do—and do not—tell you
For encoder streams, YouTube documents stream status and error messages, concurrent viewers, duration, likes, chat rate, views, average view duration, reactions, and reminders set. Which metrics appear can vary by stream type. Use status and errors to investigate the incoming stream; audience and engagement numbers describe other aspects of the live event.
Do not treat Live Control Room figures as interchangeable with YouTube Analytics. YouTube says Analytics is based on the video ID and is processed and despammed, and that its figures measure different things from Live Control Room. A metric is not an instantaneous guarantee that every viewer’s playback is working (YouTube Live Control Room metrics).

Allow for latency when checking from another device
A remote watch-page viewer may see the stream later than OBS sends it. YouTube defines latency as the delay between the encoder or camera capturing an event and its appearance in the stream. Lower-latency settings can increase playback buffering, so a delay on your monitoring device alone does not show that OBS stopped or playback failed (YouTube latency settings).

When to use OBS WebSocket or remote desktop
OBS WebSocket: control, not monitoring video
OBS WebSocket can let a compatible external tool control or automate OBS scenes and sources. It does not provide a viewer-facing playback check. WebSocket is included by default in OBS Studio 28 and later, according to the OBS Remote Control Guide and Developer Guide. If you enable it, configure authentication and keep the password private: OBS recommends protecting WebSocket against unauthorized control (OBS Remote Control Guide; OBS Developer Guide).

Remote desktop: optional full-computer access
If you need to inspect or operate the streaming PC itself, remote desktop software is a separate option. It exposes the computer interface rather than replacing YouTube’s stream-health dashboard. The setup and security precautions vary by product and network, so choose and secure a remote-access tool appropriate to your environment.
Troubleshoot a remote check without ending the stream
- Live Control Room shows a status or error: Read the specific message in the dashboard. It is the relevant place to investigate an ingestion or stream-health issue; do not use the viewer count alone as a health diagnosis.
- The dashboard looks healthy but playback is wrong: Check the watch page on another device for audio and video. The dashboard’s health state does not prove the playback experience on every device.
- The remote watch page is behind OBS: Account for stream latency before treating the delay as a failure. YouTube notes that lower latency can bring more buffering.
- You need to change an OBS scene remotely: Use a compatible OBS WebSocket client or a secured remote desktop connection. WebSocket controls OBS; it is not a video-monitor feed.
- You are preparing for an important event: Run a test live stream, preview it before going live, and check audio and video continuously, as YouTube recommends.
