FFmpeg’s concat demuxer has no documented option to skip a playlist entry when opening it fails. The dependable approach is to check the files first, remove missing or unreadable entries from the concat script, and then run FFmpeg with the filtered playlist. If a file exists but FFmpeg cannot parse it, add a probe check before building the final script.
Why the playlist does not skip a failed file
The concat demuxer reads a script containing file entries and directives, then demuxes those files in sequence as if their packets had been muxed together. It also adjusts timestamps across entries. The documented options include safe, auto_convert, and segment_time_metadata, but none is documented as an instruction to ignore an input-open failure and continue to the next entry. That means the fix belongs before FFmpeg consumes the concat script: generate a new script containing only entries that pass your checks. This is a workflow built around the documented script interface, not a hidden FFmpeg skip switch.
Filter the playlist before running FFmpeg
- Start with the source playlist. Read its entries in order and generate a separate concat script rather than passing every original row through unchanged.
- Check each path in the FFmpeg runtime environment. Confirm that the file exists and is readable by the user or process that will run FFmpeg. Remove entries that fail either check.
- Probe files that may exist but be invalid. If “opens” means FFmpeg can parse the media, run a probe/preflight step for each candidate and omit entries whose probe fails. This is a practical preflight recommendation, not a concat-demuxer feature.
- Write the filtered entries to the concat script. Preserve the intended order and use valid concat-script syntax for the paths. Then point the concat demuxer at this filtered script.
- Run your normal FFmpeg command with the filtered script. If it still fails, inspect the first remaining failing entry and the compatibility of the streams, rather than expecting the playlist to skip it automatically.
What to check after removing bad entries
Availability is not compatibility
A file may exist, be readable, and pass a probe yet still be unsuitable alongside the other entries. FFmpeg’s documentation says, “All files must have the same streams (same codecs, same time base, etc.).” Filtering out an unreadable video does not make the remaining files’ streams compatible.

Watch for duration metadata problems
The concat demuxer relies on durations to place entries on the timeline. The documentation warns that inaccurate durations can cause artifacts. If the files open but the output has timestamp or transition problems, check the duration information as well as the streams.
Do not confuse the concat options with skip controls
-safe 0: This changes which filenames and directives the concat demuxer accepts. The default forsafeis 1; setting it to 0 permits any filename. It does not make a missing or unopenable file readable.auto_convert: This is not a general repair or skip option. The documentation describes its current conversion as adding the H.264 MP4-to-Annex-B bitstream filter for H.264 streams in MP4, particularly useful when resolutions change.- Concat protocol: This presents resources as one byte stream and is intended only for formats that support concatenation at the file level. It is not a general way to skip a failed playlist entry.
- Concat filter: This joins decoded streams in a filter graph. The FFmpeg FAQ describes it as an option for cases where re-encoding is needed.

Choose the right concatenation method

Troubleshooting failed or imperfect output
- FFmpeg stops at a missing path: The script still contains an unavailable entry, or the path differs in the environment where FFmpeg runs. Recheck existence and readability there, then regenerate the filtered script.
- The file exists but fails to open: Run a probe/preflight and exclude the file if parsing fails. Check permissions and whether the runtime can access the same path you inspected.
- The playlist is rejected for its paths: Review the
safesetting and concat-script path rules. Disabling safe-path checks changes path acceptance only; it cannot repair file contents. - Files open but concatenation fails or looks wrong: Compare stream layouts, codecs, and time bases across entries. Confirm duration metadata because inaccurate durations can cause artifacts.
- Considering the protocol as a workaround: Use it only when the media format supports byte-level concatenation; it does not supply general skip-on-failure behavior.
