How to Stop OBS From Dropping Frames When Streaming a Video Playlist to YouTube

Dropped frames usually point to the connection or an unsustainable bitrate—not the playlist. Learn how to diagnose OBS’s counters, stabilize YouTube delivery, and verify encoder settings.

First identify which OBS counter is rising: dropped frames usually point to the connection between your computer and YouTube’s ingest server, or to a bitrate your connection cannot sustain—not automatically to the playlist. If OBS instead reports rendering lag or encoding overload, troubleshoot computer performance separately. Confirm the playlist works, then test the connection, bitrate, and YouTube encoder settings in that order.

1. Identify the problem OBS is reporting

Watch OBS’s status indicators while the stream runs. The counters describe different failure paths, so match the fix to the symptom.

  • Dropped frames: OBS attributes these to an unstable connection between the computer and the remote ingest server, or a configured bitrate the connection cannot keep up with. OBS says it is extremely unlikely that OBS Studio itself is the cause; that is diagnostic guidance, not a guarantee about every setup. See OBS’s stream connection troubleshooting guide.
  • Rendering lag or encoding overload: investigate GPU capacity, scene complexity, output resolution, frame rate, and encoder load. These are separate from a clearly rising network dropped-frames counter. See OBS’s encoding performance guide.

Changing scenes or lowering graphics settings is not the first response to a network-specific dropped-frames counter. Conversely, a faster connection will not fix a machine that cannot render or encode on time.

2. Confirm the playlist is configured as intended

OBS supports playlists through its VLC Video Source. The VLC source requires VLC to be installed; if OBS is 64-bit, OBS’s guide says VLC must also be 64-bit. See OBS’s media sources guide.

  1. Install VLC in the architecture matching OBS. If the VLC Video Source is missing, check that VLC is installed and that the 32-bit/64-bit versions match.
  2. Add a VLC Video Source and load the media files you want in the playlist.
  3. Set loop and shuffle according to the intended sequence. Check the source’s visibility behavior in the scene so it does not stop or behave unexpectedly when hidden or when scenes change.
  4. Preview the full sequence—or enough transitions to verify it—before relying on it unattended. Confirm that each file loads and that the picture and audio are as expected.

OBS documents playlist playback as a feature; that does not establish that the playlist itself causes network dropped frames. Keep playback setup and connection diagnosis as separate checks.

3. Stabilize the connection to YouTube

OBS recommends testing a different ingest server and lowering the video bitrate to a level your connection can sustain. Its guide gives 75% of total upload speed as a starting point for bitrate troubleshooting—not a universal guarantee. The bitrate must also fit YouTube’s encoder recommendations for your codec, resolution, and frame rate.

  1. Test a different YouTube ingest server. If the problem changes, that is useful diagnostic evidence; it does not prove the original server was the only cause.
  2. Reduce the video bitrate and test again. Use a stable upload-speed result rather than a best-case peak, and keep YouTube’s recommended range in view. If the stream becomes stable at a lower rate, the configured rate may have exceeded what the route could sustain.
  3. Test the connection without a VPN. VPN instability or routing can interfere with streaming. Compare results rather than assuming the VPN is responsible.
  4. Check security software and network-prioritization utilities. OBS names tools such as Lenovo Vantage Network Boost and Killer NIC software as examples. If testing identifies interference, adjust the utility or add an OBS exception; do not leave security software disabled.
  5. Update network drivers and retest if they are outdated.
  6. If you are on Wi-Fi, try wired Ethernet when your computer and router have compatible ports and a cable is available. Wi-Fi can be unstable, but Ethernet will not fix an ISP outage, congested route, ingest-side problem, or an overloaded encoder.

OBS also documents network options that are specific to some Windows setups, including TCP pacing. Some users report benefits, but these are tests rather than universal fixes. Leave Bind to IP at Default, as OBS recommends. Trying IPv4-only is a diagnostic test; if it makes no difference, restore the IPv4/IPv6 default.

OBS’s dynamic bitrate option can reduce bitrate when the connection cannot keep up, which may prevent some drops during congestion. The trade-off is lower stream quality, and it does not resolve the underlying connection problem.

4. Match OBS output to YouTube’s encoder guidance

YouTube’s recommendations vary with ingestion codec, resolution, and frame rate. The figures below are YouTube Help recommendations visible in 2026; they are not a test of your own upload connection. YouTube describes the minimum and recommended bitrates for the specified settings as follows:

Output Codec Minimum Recommended
1080p at 30 fps H.264 5 Mbps 14 Mbps
1080p at 60 fps H.264 6 Mbps 17 Mbps
720p at 60 fps H.264 3 Mbps 8 Mbps
1080p at 30 fps AV1 or H.265 4 Mbps 10 Mbps
1080p at 60 fps AV1 or H.265 4 Mbps 12 Mbps

These are YouTube’s ingestion recommendations, not evidence that your internet connection can sustain the recommended rate. Choose an output your connection can hold reliably. The full, current recommendations and supported configurations are on YouTube’s live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions page.

  • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft

For RTMP or RTMPS

YouTube recommends RTMPS. For RTMP/RTMPS ingestion, its guidance specifies H.264, H.265, or AV1; up to 60 fps; constant bitrate (CBR); and a two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds. Check YouTube’s live encoder page before publishing, since platform settings can change.

For HLS ingestion

Do not assume RTMP settings transfer unchanged to HLS. YouTube’s encoder settings guidance specifies HLS-specific requirements, including 1–4 second segments, TS format, a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments, and HTTPS POST/PUT. HLS has higher latency than RTMP because it sends video in segments rather than as a continuous stream. Switching protocols is not, by itself, evidence-based treatment for dropped frames.

5. If OBS reports rendering lag or encoding overload

When the problem is machine performance rather than network delivery, OBS’s encoding-performance guidance recommends freeing GPU resources and reducing work the scene must render.

  • Reduce output resolution or frame rate; if 60 fps is not working, test 30 fps.
  • Simplify scenes and remove sources, overlays, or filters that are not needed.
  • Limit expensive sources and other GPU-heavy work running at the same time.
  • Retest after each change so you can tell which adjustment addresses the actual bottleneck.

For a straightforward playlist scene, keep the composition purposeful. Do not treat a hardware upgrade as the first remedy without evidence of a rendering or encoding bottleneck.

6. Test before the next unattended stream

  1. Run a private or otherwise appropriate test stream with the intended playlist and output settings.
  2. Watch OBS’s dropped-frames, rendering-lag, and encoding-overload indicators separately.
  3. Check YouTube’s stream health during the test and confirm the stream remains stable through playlist transitions.
  4. Change one setting at a time—such as bitrate, ingest server, or frame rate—then compare results.

YouTube advises testing before streaming and monitoring stream health during the event. Its guidance is in YouTube live streaming tips and the encoder settings guide.
