If OBS does not resume your YouTube stream after broadband returns, check three things separately: whether your internet route is stable, whether OBS is sending video again, and whether YouTube’s Live Control Room has received the feed and made the event live. If OBS is stopped, start the encoder; if it is connected but dropping frames, stabilize the connection or lower the bitrate. A broadband outage does not guarantee that OBS or the YouTube event will resume automatically in the same state.
Restore the stream in this order
- Confirm usable internet, not just Wi-Fi. Wait for broadband service to return, then test whether the computer can reach other sites. A Wi-Fi connection only confirms a link to the router; it does not prove that the route to YouTube’s ingest server is working. If practical, test another connection, keeping in mind that mobile-data charges may apply. OBS identifies intermittent disconnections as a network-path issue in many cases. - Check OBS’s streaming status. Look at the connection indicator and dropped-frame count. If OBS is not streaming, continue to the next step. If it says it is reconnecting or connected but dropped frames keep rising, the feed may not be reaching YouTube reliably.
- Start the encoder feed if it is stopped. Confirm OBS has the intended YouTube stream URL and stream key, then select Start Streaming. For a scheduled YouTube stream, wait for the preview in Live Control Room and select Go live if the event requires it. The exact event state depends on how the stream was set up; starting OBS alone does not establish that the YouTube event is live. YouTube’s encoder setup instructions describe connecting the encoder and starting the feed.
- Verify the event in YouTube Live Control Room. Open the intended scheduled stream and check for a preview, stream-health status, and any error message. YouTube says the status area provides specific error messages. Confirm that this is still the event you want before creating a replacement. See YouTube’s stream-health metrics guidance.
- Reset the stream key only for a key or configuration error. A broadband outage by itself is not a reason to change credentials. If YouTube reports an invalid key or OBS cannot connect despite a working route, compare OBS’s server and key with the settings shown in Live Control Room. YouTube documents resetting a key there; after a reset, update the encoder to use the new key. See YouTube’s stream settings and troubleshooting live stream errors.
Diagnose what is still failing
OBS is stopped or YouTube has no preview
First establish that the computer has a stable route to the internet. Then start the OBS feed and check the event’s preview and status in Live Control Room. OBS sends directly to the streaming service; it does not run an intermediary streaming server for your feed. Therefore, an OBS status and a live, viewable YouTube event are separate checks.
OBS says reconnecting, or dropped frames continue
Dropped frames indicate that the connection to the remote server is unstable or cannot sustain the configured bitrate; enough dropped frames can disconnect the stream. OBS states, “It is extremely unlikely for OBS Studio to cause dropped frames.” Start by checking the network path and whether the bitrate is sustainable, rather than reinstalling OBS.
- Use Ethernet instead of Wi-Fi for a test if possible. Restart the modem and router, and check that cables are seated and undamaged.
- Pause uploads, downloads, cloud backups, or other traffic sharing the connection. A single best-case speed test may not represent stable upload performance during a stream.
- Temporarily check whether a VPN, security software, network-optimization tool, driver, or faulty cable is interfering. Change one thing at a time so you can identify whether it helped.
- If wired testing requires a cable and your existing one is damaged or unsuitable, a Cat 6 Ethernet cable is one option; it cannot fix an outage or routing fault at the ISP.
OBS reports an invalid key or server error
Compare the server and stream key in OBS with the selected YouTube stream’s encoder settings. A key reset is appropriate only if the key is wrong, compromised, or YouTube’s error calls for a reset. After changing it in Live Control Room, replace the saved key in OBS before starting the feed again.

The encoder is connected, but the event is not live
Look for the preview and event status in Live Control Room. Depending on the setup, YouTube may require you to select Go live after the encoder feed arrives. Do not assume that an active OBS connection means the scheduled event is already publicly live; check the event’s state and any displayed error.
Make bitrate and encoder settings sustainable
If OBS reconnects but drops frames, lower the video bitrate and retest on a stable connection. OBS Project’s connection guide, dated 2024-09-30, suggests starting video bitrate at 75% of total upload speed. YouTube recommends leaving 20% upload bandwidth headroom beyond the total stream bitrate. These are attributed rules of thumb, not guarantees: use dependable upload capacity and account for other traffic, rather than setting the stream from a brief peak speed result. For encoder configuration, YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. This is a stream setup requirement, not a cure for an ISP outage. YouTube also recommends RTMPS, a secure extension to RTMP. Review its streaming tips and encoder settings guidance before changing settings; avoid altering unrelated options while troubleshooting a connection failure.
Check local network settings, then involve the ISP
If the connection remains unstable after restarting the modem/router and testing Ethernet, check for network changes or software interference. OBS documents Windows-specific options under Settings → Advanced → Network, including network optimizations and TCP pacing. Leave Bind to IP at Default. OBS says IPv4 Only may be tested, but if it makes no difference, return the setting to the IPv4/IPv6 default. Dynamic bitrate can help keep a stream running by reducing quality when bandwidth falls, but it is a fallback, not a repair for the underlying connection.

If the fault persists or other services also fail, contact your ISP. Provide the outage time, symptoms, whether other devices or services were affected, and an OBS log if available. Route congestion or ISP-side changes may be outside your control; OBS advises consulting the provider before replacing network hardware when the cause is unclear. The official guidance does not establish a special reconnect setting for Indian broadband or a general recovery-time figure.
