- A computer with OBS Studio and a reliable wired or wireless internet connection. The computer and encoder must remain running for the DIY stream to continue.
- Access to the Drive video, enough local disk space if you download or mirror it, and an upload connection with capacity above the encoder’s bitrate.
- Permission to use and broadcast the video, including its audio. YouTube’s copyright and monetization rules still apply to live streams; having a file in Drive does not grant broadcast rights.
Make the Drive video available to OBS
OBS needs to read the media file from the computer. You can download it from Drive or use Google Drive for desktop. In Drive on the web, select the file and use its context menu to choose Download. If that option is unavailable, the owner may have disabled downloads for viewers or commenters; ask the owner for access or a downloadable copy. Download a file · Google Drive download controls.
Download or mirror for a long-running stream
Drive for desktop’s stream-files mode keeps files primarily in the cloud and needs an internet connection to access them. Mirror-files mode stores a full copy on the computer and makes it available offline, using local disk space. A downloaded or mirrored copy is the safer practical choice for a long broadcast because playback does not depend on continued access to Drive or the network path to the cloud. Stream and mirror files with Drive for desktop.
Check that the file plays locally before building the stream. Drive and OBS support different sets of containers and codecs, so a file visible in Drive is not automatically guaranteed to work in OBS. OBS lists MP4 among its supported media types. If playback fails, try a compatible local file rather than troubleshooting the live connection first. Video files in Google Drive.

Create a YouTube encoder stream and connect OBS
- In YouTube Studio, choose Create → Go Live, then create or select an encoder stream in Live Control Room.
- Copy the stream’s server URL and stream key into OBS’s stream settings. Match the selected service and server details to the stream created in YouTube Studio.
- Keep the stream key private: YouTube describes it as like a password and address for the stream. If it is exposed, reset it in YouTube Studio and replace the saved key in OBS.
- For a rehearsal, set the YouTube event visibility to Unlisted. Start the OBS stream and wait for the feed to appear in Live Control Room’s preview.
- Check stream health and confirm that the watch page opens as expected. Start the event from Live Control Room when the preview and audio are right.

Choose encoder settings and test upload capacity
YouTube recommends RTMPS for secure ingestion, H.264 video, constant bitrate (CBR), and a two-second keyframe interval; it says not to exceed four seconds. Choose the bitrate for your actual output resolution, frame rate, and codec rather than treating one figure as universal. YouTube transcodes the incoming feed for different viewer formats. End the event and understand the archive limit
When finished, end the event in Live Control Room and stop the encoder according to YouTube’s workflow. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived and available in the Live tab. Its guidance does not establish the same archive guarantee for streams lasting 12 hours or longer, so do not rely on an automatic archive for a longer loop. YouTube encoder workflow.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I stream a video from Google Drive to YouTube Live?
Yes. Make the file accessible to the computer running an encoder such as OBS, then send its looping playback to a YouTube encoder stream.
Will the loop keep going if I close my laptop?
Not with the OBS method: the computer running OBS must stay on and connected. A cloud service such as StreamNeo can run the uploaded loop without a home computer staying on.
