To loop a prerecorded video on YouTube Live from a cloud desktop, run OBS Studio on a cloud virtual machine (VM), add the video as an OBS Media Source, enable Loop, and connect OBS to YouTube with the server URL and stream key from YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. The VM must stay available, OBS must keep running, and the connection must sustain the stream. A cloud desktop moves the work off your personal computer; by itself, it does not guarantee an uninterrupted broadcast.
Before you start
You need a YouTube channel that can livestream, a video file you have permission to broadcast, and a cloud VM with a usable graphical desktop. You also need to keep OBS running in that desktop session and provide enough outbound bandwidth for your chosen stream settings.
- Check YouTube eligibility: the channel must be verified and unrestricted for live streaming. YouTube says first-time activation may take up to 24 hours. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance and its encoder setup guide.
- Choose a VM deliberately: check that it supports a desktop session, remains running rather than suspending, and can sustain your required upload bitrate. Whether OBS survives a remote disconnect, and what happens after a VM restart, depend on the provider and configuration.
- Prepare the media: make sure the file is stored on the VM or in a location available to the account running OBS. Confirm you have the necessary rights to stream its video and audio.
OBS is free and open source, and the OBS Help Portal says it can be used commercially without restrictions. That does not grant rights to music, footage, or other material in your broadcast. OBS Help Portal
Set up the YouTube broadcast
- In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go Live, then create or schedule a broadcast.
- In the Live Control Room’s stream settings, copy the YouTube server URL and stream key. OBS needs these to send the video feed to YouTube.
- Keep the stream key private. Anyone who has it may be able to send a feed to your channel; do not post it, share it publicly, or include it in screenshots.
YouTube distinguishes the broadcast—the watchable event—from the stream—the incoming audio and video feed linked to it. You can complete this setup in Studio without using the YouTube Live Streaming API. Google’s YouTube Live Streaming API overview

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Install OBS and configure the loop
- Open the cloud desktop and install or launch OBS Studio. Keep the desktop session and VM available for the duration of the broadcast.
- Create a scene in OBS, then add a Media Source and select the video file.
- In the Media Source properties, enable Loop. OBS leaves this option off by default; when enabled, the source starts again after the file finishes.
- If you want several videos to repeat as a playlist, add a VLC Video source, create the playlist, and use Loop Playlist. VLC must be installed; with 64-bit OBS, install the 64-bit VLC version.
- Preview the scene and check both picture and sound. Let the file reach its end and confirm that playback begins again. This verifies the media loop, not the reliability of the VM or the live connection.
OBS documents the Media Source and playlist controls in its Media Sources guide.
Connect OBS to YouTube and go live
- In OBS, open Settings → Stream. Select YouTube if it is available, or choose the option to enter a server and key manually.
- Enter the server URL and stream key copied from YouTube Studio, then save the settings.
- Start streaming in OBS. Return to the Live Control Room and wait for YouTube’s incoming preview.
- For a scheduled broadcast, check the preview and then select Go live in the Live Control Room. Check the public watch page from a separate viewer session when practical, including its audio.
YouTube recommends previewing an encoder feed before starting a scheduled broadcast. Google’s API guidance also describes using a monitor stream to test content. YouTube encoder guide · YouTube Live Streaming API overview

Choose stream settings and monitor the connection
There is no single bitrate or resolution that fits every video and VM connection. The required settings depend on the content, resolution, frame rate, and available upload capacity. Start with OBS’s Tools → Auto-Configuration Wizard as a baseline, then verify the result in the preview. OBS identifies unstable or insufficient upload connectivity as a cause of dropped frames.
- Watch OBS’s dropped-frame indicator and YouTube’s preview or stream status while the broadcast runs.
- If dropped frames rise, check the VM’s network connection and whether it can sustain the selected output. Reducing output demands may help, but the appropriate setting depends on the video and connection.
- Do not assume that enabling Media Source Loop restarts a failed OBS process or reconnects a broadcast after a VM reboot. The loop setting repeats a file; it is not process supervision or cloud-instance recovery.
OBS’s help page covers dropped frames and the Auto-Configuration Wizard: OBS Help Portal.

Plan for long broadcasts and YouTube policy
Long sessions and archives
YouTube’s encoder guide says streams under 12 hours will be automatically archived. Do not assume a single live session longer than that will yield a complete replay. If an archive matters, plan the session duration accordingly and confirm the current guidance in YouTube’s encoder help.
Copyright and monetization
A successful technical loop does not establish that you have permission to use the video or its music, or that the channel qualifies for monetization. YouTube’s monetization policy says its video policy applies to live streams and calls for original, authentic content. In an update dated July 15, 2025, YouTube renamed its “repetitious content” policy to “inauthentic content” and clarified that repetitive or mass-produced content is ineligible. The policy addresses the content and channel; it does not mean that every looped broadcast is automatically disallowed. Review YouTube’s channel monetization policies and secure the rights needed for all material you stream.

| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| The video stops at the end instead of repeating | Loop is off, or the wrong source type or file is configured. | Open the Media Source properties and enable Loop. For a playlist, check the VLC Video source’s Loop Playlist setting and confirm VLC is installed. |
| YouTube receives no feed | The stream has not started in OBS, or the server URL or key is missing or incorrect. | Check OBS’s Settings → Stream, confirm the stream key matches the Live Control Room, and start streaming in OBS. Keep the key private. |
| The feed appears unstable or OBS reports dropped frames | The connection may be unstable or unable to sustain the selected bitrate. | Check the VM’s outbound connection and OBS’s dropped-frame indicator. Revisit the output settings with the Auto-Configuration Wizard as a starting point. |
| The scene is blank or has no sound | The file may be unavailable to the account running OBS, or the source may be misconfigured. | Confirm the file is accessible in the VM, then preview the scene and check its video and audio before broadcasting. |
| The broadcast ends after a VM or OBS interruption | The loop repeats the media only while OBS is running; it does not supervise OBS or guarantee VM recovery. | Check the VM’s restart and suspension behavior and make a recovery plan for a process crash, reboot, network interruption, or ended YouTube broadcast. |
| The first live broadcast is not available immediately | YouTube may still be activating live streaming for a first-time broadcaster. | Check channel verification and restrictions, and allow up to 24 hours for first-time activation according to YouTube’s encoder guidance. |
Cloud desktop, local computer, or hosted service?
These options involve different responsibilities; the sources do not establish a universal cost or reliability winner. YouTube’s encoder directory includes hosted tools such as Gyre, described there as a cloud-based option for 24/7 prerecorded YouTube streams. Verify any provider’s current features and terms independently.
