If OBS keeps showing the same video, first identify the source playing it. OBS’s Media Source plays an individual file, and its Loop option repeats that file. To play several local files in sequence, use VLC Video, add the files to its playlist, and check Loop Playlist and Shuffle Playlist. YouTube’s loop control affects playback for viewers on YouTube; it does not change OBS’s local source settings.
Find which OBS source is repeating
- In OBS, select the scene that feeds your YouTube stream.
- Look through that scene’s Sources and identify the source responsible for the repeated video and audio. Select it and confirm what it is in the source’s properties.
- Use the source type to choose the right fix: Media Source is for an individual media file; VLC Video can play multiple files from a playlist.
If the scene captures a YouTube page or player in a browser or window source, these local-media settings may not control its playback. Check the captured page or player instead.
Stop a single Media Source file from looping
- Select the relevant Media Source in the scene and open its properties.
- Check that the file path points to the intended video.
- Turn off Loop if the file should play once and stop. OBS describes this control as specifying whether the file plays again after playback completes.
Turning off Loop prevents that source from restarting the file; it does not make a Media Source advance through other files. For a sequence of local videos, configure a VLC Video playlist instead.
Play a sequence of local videos with VLC Video
- Install VLC. OBS requires VLC for the VLC Video source, and OBS’s documentation says 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC.
- In the scene, add or select a VLC Video source and open its properties.
- Add the distinct video files you want to play to the source’s playlist. Check the list itself to make sure it contains the intended files.
- Set Loop Playlist according to what should happen when the last item finishes. When on, the source restarts the playlist after it runs out; turn it off if the playlist should end.
- Set Shuffle Playlist only if you want playback order randomized. Shuffling changes order, not whether the playlist repeats. OBS documents Loop Playlist as on by default and Shuffle Playlist as off by default.
- Review the source’s visibility behavior if it pauses, stops, or restarts when hidden. OBS lists options controlling whether VLC Video playback continues, pauses, or stops while the source is not visible.
Keep YouTube’s loop control separate from OBS
YouTube Help’s loop feature repeats a video or playlist while someone is watching YouTube. It is distinct from the local playback controls in an OBS scene. If OBS is capturing a YouTube playlist through a browser or window source rather than playing local files, investigate that player’s behavior; the Media Source and VLC Video instructions above apply to local media sources. Check a third-party playlist plugin only if you use it
If the source is the third-party Media Playlist Source plugin and one file repeats instead of advancing, check the plugin and OBS versions. The plugin’s version 0.1.3 notes, dated April 13, 2025, describe a fix for a playlist failing to continue when the next file path is the same, including a one-file loop. Those notes say the required upstream OBS change is included starting with OBS 31. This is a plugin-specific diagnostic, not a general explanation for repetition in Media Source or VLC Video. Check the plugin maintainer’s current compatibility information before changing versions.
Test before broadcasting
- Watch the OBS preview long enough to confirm that it advances through the intended files and behaves as expected at the end of the playlist.
- Check the complete output, including audio, before broadcasting. OBS recommends testing for a few minutes before a stream.
If you change a playlist while a YouTube live stream is already running, that is a separate situation from correcting a repeat setting. Confirm that the OBS source itself reflects the playlist you intend to use.
