You can run a prerecorded video as an overnight YouTube livestream with OBS Studio: add the video as a looping Media Source, connect OBS to a scheduled YouTube stream using its URL and stream key, and prevent Windows from sleeping. Test the complete setup before leaving it unattended; an unspecified PC or internet connection cannot be assumed to sustain a stream all night.
Before you start: check channel access and the PC
Make sure the channel can livestream
YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the past 90 days. First-time live-stream activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable it well before the night you plan to broadcast. Check the computer against the actual workload
OBS lists Windows 10 or Windows 11 and a DirectX 10.1-compatible GPU among its basic Windows requirements. Those are compatibility requirements, not a promise that a particular computer can encode your chosen resolution and frame rate. The result depends on the encoder, video settings and scene complexity. OBS cautions: “Having a compatible system does not guarantee that it is capable of streaming or recording using OBS Studio.” Test the actual PC with the intended settings before relying on it overnight. Schedule a YouTube livestream and get its stream key
- Open YouTube Studio and go to Live Control Room. Use the Manage tab to schedule a new stream or select an existing scheduled event.
- In the event’s stream settings, copy the stream URL and stream key. In OBS, open Settings > Stream, choose YouTube as the service, and enter the connection details. You can connect an account if that option is available in your OBS setup; otherwise use the stream key method.
- Keep the stream key private. Anyone who obtains it may be able to send a broadcast to your channel. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube Studio and update OBS.
Use YouTube’s current encoder settings and bitrate recommendations as a starting point, not a guarantee for your PC or connection. The guide lists 2 Mbps as the recommended video bitrate for 720p at 30 fps, with 6 Mbps as the range maximum. Choose a profile your encoder can handle and your measured upload can sustain; YouTube recommends leaving about 20% headroom between the total streaming bitrate and available upload bandwidth. Set up the prerecorded video in OBS
For one video that repeats
- In OBS, select the scene you will use and click the plus button under Sources.
- Choose Media Source, give it a recognizable name, and select the local video file.
- Enable Loop in the Media Source properties. Confirm the source is visible in the preview and that its audio is routed as expected.
- Let the video play through its beginning and end during testing. Check that the transition at the loop point looks and sounds acceptable.
OBS’s Media Source can play a local video file and loop it. If you need several files in a playlist, OBS also offers a VLC Video source with a Loop Playlist option; VLC must be installed. OBS media sources
For a playlist of videos
- Install VLC if it is not already installed.
- Add a VLC Video source in OBS and select the files for the playlist.
- Enable Loop Playlist and check that the order and transitions behave as intended in preview.
Choose a stream profile your upload can support
Resolution and frame rate are trade-offs between picture detail, encoding load and bandwidth. The appropriate settings depend on the computer and connection, so there is no universally safe overnight profile. YouTube’s settings table lists 720p at 30 fps with a recommended video bitrate of 2 Mbps and a range maximum of 6 Mbps; use the current table for other resolutions and frame rates. Include audio and any other outbound stream traffic when checking total bitrate, and leave roughly 20% upload headroom as YouTube recommends. YouTube bitrate settings

Do not choose a high resolution solely because the source file supports it. Run a test with the same scene, source, encoder and bitrate you intend to use. Watch OBS’s status and YouTube Live Control Room’s stream health for dropped frames or connection warnings. If the test is unstable, lower the bitrate or profile and test again.
Keep Windows awake while the stream runs
- In Windows 11, open Settings > System > Power & battery > Screen, sleep, & hibernate timeouts.
- Set the sleep timeout so the PC will not sleep during the planned broadcast. You can let the display turn off separately; the display timeout and sleep timeout are independent.
- Keep the PC connected to power and check the power settings that apply when plugged in. Confirm that closing a laptop lid, if relevant, will not put it to sleep.
Microsoft’s Windows 11 guidance describes the separate screen and sleep timeout controls: change power and sleep settings. Menu wording can vary by Windows version and device.

Test the entire broadcast before leaving
- Start OBS and connect it to the scheduled YouTube event. Check that the correct looping source is active.
- In Live Control Room, inspect the preview. Confirm the right event and visibility, and check that video motion and sound are present.
- For a private rehearsal, use unlisted visibility if appropriate. Confirm who can access the event before sharing its link.
- Leave the stream running long enough to check OBS’s connection status, YouTube stream health, audio and the video loop. A test does not guarantee a later uninterrupted broadcast, but it can expose configuration or capacity problems.
- For an overnight setup, finish preparations well before bedtime. YouTube recommends setting up an encoder two hours ahead and checking in 15 minutes before the scheduled event; these are preparation recommendations, not uptime guarantees. YouTube streaming tips
Use only video and audio you are entitled to stream. YouTube requires streams to comply with its Community Guidelines and warns that trailer content must not infringe others’ rights. That warning is not a complete account of copyright rules for every kind of prerecorded program; rights and permissions depend on the material and circumstances. End the stream and understand the archive limit
YouTube says: “All streams under 12 hours will be automatically archived.” If having a complete replay matters, keep the broadcast under 12 hours rather than assuming a longer stream will be fully saved. When the event is over, end it in YouTube and then stop the encoder in OBS. YouTube encoder instructions

Troubleshooting an overnight OBS stream

Connection and cost considerations
A reliable internet connection and enough sustained upload capacity matter more than a particular cable type. If the PC has Ethernet and a wired connection is practical, an optional Cat 6 cable is one way to connect it; it is not a prerequisite and cannot guarantee continuity. The local approach uses the spare computer and existing internet connection, but the PC must stay powered, awake and capable of encoding for the broadcast. A dedicated hardware encoder is another supported option, not an established requirement. Whether either approach is worthwhile depends on the equipment already available and the reliability you need.
