Symone Sanders married Shawn Townsend on July 15, 2022, at Larz Anderson House in Washington, D.C. Guests thought they were attending a celebration of the couple’s upcoming wedding; after they gathered, Sanders and Townsend revealed that the event was their wedding.
Why the ceremony was a surprise
The couple invited guests to “Toast to Townsend,” presenting the gathering as a celebration ahead of their nuptials. Instead, about 100 family members and friends witnessed the wedding. The surprise was for the guests—the couple were already engaged.
Vogue’s wedding feature and reports from TheGrio and Washingtonian agree on the date and the surprise format. Sanders later described the day in a social caption reported by TheGrio: “Woke up 7.15.22 and got married.”
Where they married and who officiated
The ceremony took place at Larz Anderson House, a historic house in Washington, D.C. Pastor Dededrick O. Rivers of Ward Memorial AME Church officiated. After exchanging vows, the couple jumped the broom, a tradition included in the ceremony.
