YouTube Live Control Room Shows “Encoder Disconnected” While OBS Is Streaming: How to Fix It

When OBS is active but YouTube Live Control Room says “encoder disconnected,” verify the intended event and key first, then use the preview, health messages and OBS network statistics to isolate the cause.

If OBS says it is streaming but YouTube Live Control Room says “encoder disconnected,” first confirm that OBS is sending to the same YouTube event you have open. Then verify that event’s server URL and stream key, start OBS, and look for a preview in that event. OBS’s streaming indicator only confirms activity on the encoder side; it does not prove that YouTube received the feed for the event on your screen.

YouTube’s help guidance describes checking the stream sent to YouTube, but does not define the exact “encoder disconnected” label as one specific technical failure. Treat it as a signal-path problem to diagnose—from OBS, through the network, to the intended YouTube event—rather than assuming one cause.

Start with the intended YouTube event

Keep the correct stream open in YouTube Live Control Room while you check OBS. If you have more than one scheduled event or stream, a dashboard for the wrong one will not show a feed being sent elsewhere.

  1. Check the event. Confirm that the event open in Live Control Room is the one you intend to broadcast.
  2. Check OBS’s destination. Confirm that OBS is configured for the intended YouTube destination or event, rather than another event or a different service.
  3. Start the encoder and inspect the event. YouTube’s setup guidance puts the preview check in Live Control Room after the encoder starts. For a scheduled stream, wait for the preview before selecting Go live.

If the preview appears in another event, the encoder may be sending successfully, but not to the event you are checking. Correct the destination before changing codecs or network settings.

  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Verify the stream URL and key

In OBS, compare the configured server URL and stream key with the values shown for the intended event in Live Control Room. YouTube’s stream key tells the encoder where to send the feed and allows YouTube to accept it. A key for a different event, an old key, or a mistyped URL can prevent the intended event from receiving the stream.

  • Copy the URL and key from the event you are troubleshooting, then update OBS’s stream configuration if they do not match.
  • If YouTube reports an encoder start error, its troubleshooting guidance says to get a new stream key in Live Control Room and update the encoder. Resetting a key requires channel owner or manager permissions.
  • After changing the key, make sure OBS uses the replacement. A reset does not update the encoder automatically.
  • Do not share the key in screenshots, public logs, or support posts. Treat it like a password.

Read YouTube’s preview and health information

Check the intended event for a video preview and any stream-health message or error. YouTube says the Live Dashboard and Live Control Room check for errors in the stream sent to YouTube; its messages can identify problems such as an incorrect format.

  • No preview: Recheck the event, destination, URL and key, then investigate the connection from OBS to YouTube.
  • Preview present, but an error is shown: Use the specific health message to choose the next check. Do not change several settings at once; doing so makes it harder to identify the cause.
  • Preview present and no relevant error: The feed is reaching the event. Follow the event’s on-screen status and controls rather than treating OBS’s status alone as confirmation that the YouTube broadcast is live.

Check OBS for dropped frames or disconnections

OBS’s official connection guidance says dropped frames and intermittent disconnections point to a network issue between the computer and the remote ingest server. Dropped frames can occur when the connection is unstable or cannot sustain the configured bitrate. They are useful evidence of a connection problem, though they do not by themselves identify whether the cause is Wi-Fi, local equipment, the ISP, or the route to the ingest server.

  1. Open OBS’s statistics view while streaming and check whether dropped frames are increasing or whether disconnections recur.
  2. Confirm that OBS is targeting the intended server or destination.
  3. If the connection is unstable or cannot sustain the current bitrate, test a lower video bitrate and observe whether the dropped-frame behavior improves.

OBS suggests using 75% of total upload speed as a starting point for bitrate planning. That is a starting guideline, not a guarantee: available upload capacity can vary, and other network use can compete with the stream. Avoid raising bitrate to address a missing preview unless the evidence points to insufficient capacity.

Isolate problems in the local and outbound network

YouTube recommends checking encoder software and errors, CPU load, local output quality where an archive is available, and outbound internet. OBS also lists several possible connection causes. Test one change at a time so you can tell whether it affected the result.

  • Wi-Fi: If practical, test with a known-good wired connection. Wi-Fi instability can interrupt the path to the ingest server.
  • VPN or network-prioritization software: Temporarily test without it if safe and permitted. Restore your normal protections after the diagnostic test.
  • Firewall or antivirus: Check whether security software is blocking or disrupting OBS’s outbound connection. Do not leave protections disabled as a workaround.
  • Router, modem, cable, or network hardware: Inspect the local connection and, where possible, test with known-good equipment or an existing spare cable. Replace hardware only if the test implicates it; a cable cannot fix a wrong event or key, an encoder-format error, an ISP route problem, or a YouTube-side fault.
  • CPU load and local recording: Check encoder errors and CPU load, and inspect a local archive if one is available. These checks can help distinguish a local encoding or quality problem from a feed that is not reaching YouTube.
  • ISP or outbound path: If local checks do not resolve the issue, test another permitted network path if available. Contact your ISP if outbound internet problems persist.

Change format or protocol only for a matching error

Do not switch codecs or protocols simply because Live Control Room says the encoder is disconnected. Match the change to YouTube’s error:

Troubleshoot by symptom

What you observe Most useful next check
OBS is streaming, but the intended event has no preview Confirm event and destination, then compare the event’s URL and key with OBS. Check the network path if they match.
A different YouTube event receives the preview Correct OBS’s destination or open the event that is actually receiving the feed.
YouTube reports an encoder start error Follow YouTube’s instruction to get a new key in Live Control Room and update OBS; check that the replacement is in use.
Dropped frames or intermittent disconnections appear in OBS Investigate the connection to the remote ingest server: test a stable wired path, check network equipment and outbound connectivity, and lower bitrate if the connection cannot sustain it.
YouTube identifies a format error Use H.264 video and AAC audio for the documented incorrect-format case.
YouTube reports an RTMPS timeout or SSL error Check the RTMPS URL and encoder support; for an SSL error, YouTube notes port 443 as a possible remedy.

When to escalate

If the event, URL and key are confirmed but the preview still does not appear, preserve evidence that helps separate encoder, network and platform symptoms:

  • The time the problem occurred and the exact YouTube health/error text.
  • Whether the correct event received a preview.
  • OBS’s log and whether dropped frames or disconnections increased.
  • Whether a known-good wired or alternate network path changed the result.

Do not include the stream key in any evidence you share. YouTube advises reporting persistent stream problems; contact your ISP when outbound internet trouble is found. OBS likewise recommends ISP help if its connection troubleshooting does not resolve the problem.
