First find out which part failed: FFmpeg may have exited, the devotional playlist or one of its media segments may have become unavailable, or FFmpeg may still be running without sending a usable feed to YouTube. Check the service logs and playlist source before restarting, then verify the stream in YouTube Live Control Room and on the watch page. A running process alone does not prove the stream has recovered.
Diagnose the failure before restarting
Capture the most recent error before restarting the job. Repeated restarts can obscure the original failure and leave a persistent problem—such as an expired playlist URL or invalid stream key—unfixed. Classify the issue into one of these layers:
- Process: FFmpeg exited, received a signal, or is repeatedly restarting.
- Input: the playlist URL, authentication, or a referenced media segment is unavailable, or the playlist has reached its end.
- Network: DNS, TLS, firewall, or outbound connectivity is preventing the VPS from reaching the source or YouTube.
- Output or credentials: the YouTube ingest URL or stream key is wrong, stale, or no longer accepted.
- Resources or configuration: the VPS ran short of memory or disk space, or the FFmpeg command or options are invalid for the installed build.
Check FFmpeg status and logs
If FFmpeg runs under systemd, check the actual unit name and inspect its status and recent journal entries. For a unit named ffmpeg.service, for example, use:
systemctl status ffmpeg.service
journalctl -u ffmpeg.service -n 100 --no-pager
If your setup writes FFmpeg stderr to a separate log, inspect that file too. Note the exit code or signal, the last input and output messages, and whether the service has been restarting. If the process appears alive, look for signs that input packets or output progress stopped rather than assuming that an active process is delivering video.

Check the VPS’s system logs for out-of-memory events and confirm there is free disk space. The distribution, service name, log destination, and FFmpeg command vary by VPS setup; do not assume the example unit name matches yours.
Check the playlist and its segments from the VPS
Confirm that the playlist resolves and responds from the server running FFmpeg. If it is HLS or another segmented format, test whether the referenced media segments are still reachable as well: a playlist can load successfully even when its segments fail. Check for DNS or TLS errors, authentication failures, expired signed URLs, HTTP errors, and an unexpected end of input.
Do not share an unredacted signed playlist URL when asking for help. It may contain credentials or a temporary access token.

Recover an interrupted playlist input
For an HTTP input that suffers a temporary interruption, FFmpeg provides HTTP protocol reconnect options. Depending on the input and installed build, relevant options include reconnect, reconnect_at_eof, reconnect_streamed, reconnect_on_network_error, reconnect_on_http_error, and bounds such as reconnect_delay_max, reconnect_max_retries, and reconnect_delay_total_max. FFmpeg documents that reconnect_at_eof treats end-of-file as an error, which can be useful for endless or live streams; reconnect_streamed enables retries for streamed, non-seekable inputs. See the FFmpeg Protocols Documentation.
These are HTTP protocol options, not a universal repair for every playlist format, source outage, authentication problem, or YouTube output failure. Confirm that each option exists in the FFmpeg build on your VPS with ffmpeg -h protocol=http. Put protocol options where they apply to the relevant input in your command; option placement matters. Use retry limits appropriate to the source so that a permanent error does not cause an endless, rapid retry cycle.
Choose the recovery layer that matches the failure
| What failed | Useful recovery | What it cannot fix |
|---|---|---|
| Temporary interruption to a supported HTTP input while FFmpeg remains running | Use supported, bounded HTTP reconnect options for that input. | A persistent bad URL, expired authorization, unsupported input format, or YouTube output problem. |
| FFmpeg exited after a failure | Use a service manager such as systemd with a deliberate restart policy, then inspect why it exited. | A broken command, invalid key, exhausted resources, or any other persistent underlying fault. |
| FFmpeg remains active but YouTube receives no acceptable feed | Check input progress, output configuration, network egress, and Live Control Room messages. | Restarting the process without identifying which link in the chain failed. |
Check the YouTube output and stream key
In YouTube Live Control Room, compare the current stream URL and key with the values configured for FFmpeg. YouTube describes a stream key as the encoder’s password and address: it identifies where the feed should be sent and lets YouTube accept it. Treat it as a secret. Do not paste a real key into a public command, screenshot, log excerpt, or support ticket. See YouTube’s guide to managing live stream settings.

If the key may have been exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and update the server’s secret or configuration before restarting. Changing a key without changing the encoder configuration will break the connection. For startup errors, YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting guide also directs creators to get the key in Live Control Room and enter it in the encoder.
Use the exact ingest URL YouTube supplies for the event. YouTube recommends RTMPS, its encrypted RTMP-over-TLS/SSL option; use it when the installed FFmpeg build and command support it. Copy the RTMPS URL from Live Control Room rather than guessing or reconstructing it. See YouTube’s RTMPS instructions.
Restart FFmpeg safely if it has exited
systemd’s default Restart=no disables automatic restarts. Its Restart=on-failure policy can relaunch a service after qualifying failures, including a nonzero exit, certain signal terminations, timeouts, or watchdog failure. The precise behavior depends on the service configuration. See the systemd service manual.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
If you configure automatic recovery, include a restart delay and appropriate rate limits for the job, retain logs, and keep credentials out of world-readable unit files. Avoid a tight restart loop: a manager can relaunch a broken command repeatedly, but it cannot make an invalid URL, revoked key, exhausted disk or memory, or unsupported option work. After changing a persistent cause, restart the actual service unit used by your VPS setup.
Verify the stream reaches viewers
- Confirm process stability: check that FFmpeg has stopped crashing or restarting and that its input and output are making progress.
- Inspect Live Control Room: open the intended stream event, confirm that a preview appears, and review stream-health indicators and messages.
- Check the event settings: make sure the event and its privacy setting are the ones you intend before announcing recovery.
- Test the viewer experience: open the channel’s watch page and confirm that both video and audio play.
YouTube recommends testing before going live, monitoring stream health and messages, checking the preview, and verifying that the live event is accessible. See YouTube’s streaming tips and instructions for creating a live stream with an encoder.

Leave headroom on the VPS connection
YouTube recommends having 20% spare upload bandwidth beyond the total stream bitrate. That is YouTube’s guidance, not a guarantee against outages on a particular VPS route. Compare the stream’s total bitrate with the VPS’s reliable outbound capacity; a bitrate that exceeds what the connection can sustain may contribute to an unstable feed. See YouTube’s streaming tips.

Match the encoder settings to the stream
YouTube’s encoder guidance covers RTMP/RTMPS and the H.264, H.265, and AV1 codec options. Its standard guidance recommends CBR and a two-second keyframe interval, with intervals not exceeding four seconds. The appropriate bitrate depends on the selected codec, resolution, and frame rate, so use the matching row in YouTube’s current settings table rather than copying a number intended for a different stream. See YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.
Make sure the devotional recordings are cleared for streaming
Before restoring a playlist, confirm that you have the rights or permissions needed to stream its recordings, including music and any other material incorporated into them. A stream that technically reaches YouTube can still be interrupted or challenged over content rights. Do not assume that devotional subject matter alone establishes permission to stream a recording.
Troubleshoot recurring failures
| Symptom | Likely checks | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| FFmpeg exited and the service will not stay up | Exit code, signal, stderr, journal, restart history, memory, disk, command validity, and option support. | Fix the specific cause before relying on automatic restart; configure a measured restart policy only for failures it can recover from. |
| FFmpeg is running but input progress stopped | Playlist response, DNS, TLS, authentication or URL expiry, segment availability, and unexpected EOF. | Restore source access or use bounded reconnect behavior supported by the input protocol and installed build. |
| Input works but Live Control Room has no preview | Output URL and protocol, stream key, RTMPS support, outbound firewall rules, and YouTube’s displayed messages. | Correct the output configuration, update any reset key securely, and restart the encoder. |
| Preview appears but playback is poor | Available upload capacity, bitrate stability, codec and encoder settings, audio/video presence, and YouTube health indicators. | Compare settings with YouTube’s guidance for the actual codec, resolution, and frame rate, and leave the recommended upload headroom. |
| The service repeatedly restarts without restoring the stream | Whether the failure is transient or a persistent URL, key, configuration, or resource problem. | Use the logs to fix the underlying issue and adjust restart delay or rate limits; repeated launches alone do not constitute recovery. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is to keep uploaded devotional videos looping on YouTube without maintaining your own FFmpeg process, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload the videos, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It plays uploaded videos on YouTube; it does not stream from a camera. Nothing has to stay on at home, and it automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. Any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps is streamed as made at one flat price per slot. The first day is free with no card. The monthly option is $9.99 per month. In India, UPI works alongside cards. To try it, start a free StreamNeo day.
