If a YouTube live stream stops when your computer sleeps, keep the computer running the encoder awake for the full broadcast. You can turn off the display separately; on Windows 11, adjust the plugged-in sleep timeout and check what closing the lid or pressing the power button does. On a Mac, use the documented prevent-sleep setting for a powered computer with its display off, if available. Confirm the change in YouTube Live Control Room rather than assuming the stream is still running.
Why sleep can stop a YouTube live stream
For an encoder-based broadcast, the computer running the encoder sends the video feed to YouTube using the configured stream URL and key. If that computer sleeps, it may stop sending the feed. Turning off the screen is a separate action on Windows 11, so a dark display does not necessarily mean the computer has slept. Device behavior and available settings vary by hardware and operating system.
This guidance is for a stream that depends on a computer to send its feed. If you are streaming directly from a browser or another method, first identify what device or app is actually providing the video; encoder-specific steps may not apply.
Prevent sleep on Windows 11
Set the plugged-in sleep timeout
- Connect the computer to power for the planned stream.
- Open Settings > System > Power & battery > Screen, sleep, & hibernate timeouts.
- Set the plugged-in Make my device sleep after control so the computer will not sleep during the broadcast. If you want the display to turn off, set its screen timeout separately.
- Check the plugged-in values specifically. A battery setting does not determine what happens while the computer is connected to power.
Microsoft lists different default timeouts depending on the device’s standby type. These are published defaults, not universal settings; users can change them and configurations differ.

Check the lid and power button
Changing the idle timeout may not be enough if you close a laptop lid or press its power button. Microsoft notes that, for many PCs, closing the lid or pressing the power button puts the computer to sleep. Check the lid-close and power-button actions in Windows power settings and avoid triggering sleep during the stream. The exact controls can depend on the device and Windows configuration.

Prevent sleep on a Mac
Apple documents a power setting for keeping a supported Mac awake while its display is off. On a Mac laptop, look in Battery settings for Prevent automatic sleeping on power adapter when the display is off. On a Mac desktop, look in Energy settings for Prevent automatic sleeping when the display is off. Connect the Mac to power and enable the relevant option if it is available on your model and macOS version. See Apple’s sleep and wake settings guidance for the documented controls.
Verify the stream before and during the broadcast
- Before starting, check the preview in YouTube Live Control Room and verify that the event is accessible.
- After going live, confirm the picture and sound on the live watch page. Continue monitoring the stream during the broadcast rather than relying only on the computer’s power settings.
- If your encoder workflow provides a local archive, monitor that as well.
- When ending the event, wait until YouTube indicates it has ended, then stop the encoder.

If the stream still disconnects
- The screen goes dark and the stream stops: Check whether the computer slept, not just whether the display turned off. Revisit the sleep timeout for the power state in use.
- It stops when you close the lid or press the power button: Check those actions separately from the idle timeout. Avoid the action that triggers sleep during the broadcast.
- It stops while the computer is confirmed awake: Sleep may not be the cause. Investigate other possibilities such as a network interruption, encoder failure, or a platform-side problem; the power-setting guidance alone cannot diagnose them.
- You are not using an encoder: Identify the device or app supplying the broadcast before applying encoder-specific advice.
